I think I have two tips for when you're starting out: 1.) Buy a notebook, make a note file or folder and/or make room on your phone for voice recording, and jot down every idea you have. A plot for a story, a character idea, even if it's just an inspiring word you heard, write it down quickly. Slowly but surely, you'll create a whole repertoire of ideas you could be passionate about and never lack ideas when you want to make something! 2.) When you start out with actually executing an idea, I'd recommend sticking to 1-2 projects and not more. Also it's useful to start with smaller things before you go create that one big graphic novel you had in your head, just to get the hang of your passion projects first! Oh, there's one more tip that just came to me! 3.) Keep a list of all ongoing project's (if you have multiple) and cross them off when they're done! Then you'll be able to track each project at one glance (Oof I wrote a bit much, hope it somehow helps you ^^)

I do a lot of personal projects, it landed me a job as a concept artist for a few months, getting paid per hour. It was pretty cool. You never know what just tuning your skills can do. Learning how to animate things and regularly trying new programs can be frustrating, but at the end it can feel amazing because you can look to someone working on a bigger project and genuinely help them. Your stuff doesn't have to be amazing, try not to turn your work into a profitable project right away but find ways to promote it, a lot of the time the reason you aren't getting attention no matter how good you are is due to the randomness of the internet. You DESERVE to make art and shouldn't feel the need to justify it to anyone.

This video holds a lot of possible reasons to do a personal project... However, to apply it, I think a person should pick one, either focusing on learning, or focusing on developing a portfolio piece. I say this because finishing a personal project is A LOT OF WORK. One issue I do tend to find that I have, is choosing what personal project to focus on. Like it's a constant back and forth between wanting to do a comic or animated short, and event then it not just those two, but like 3-4 different comics I want to make, and multiple music video or short stories in animation I would like to make. Any advice on how to go about choosing and focusing on project when you get excited to want to work on others?
@daptor1427
@daptor1427 3 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem. The few times I managed to get a nice finished project, it was when I focused on one major project at a time. I would for example make a comic as my main focus, but also do a bit of doodling or composing in the mean time, just very small things with no pressure, to keep me from getting bored from working too much on the same thing. I'm still struggling with it, but that is what seems to work for me. I tend to switch between having zero focus and hyperfocus, so occasionally I do get a lot done and I'm not sure how I did it. So it may not work for everyone, but it can be worth a try.

@@daptor1427 thank you. I actually stumbled into a similar conclusion only recently, after spending 3 months focusing on a comic for a contest. Which now that I got one chapter done, and wanting to make more, but not having a huge deadline over my head, I can no spend more time with smaller things besides just the comic.

I tried to make a short animation, but I never finished it. I made characters, storyboard/animatic, voices, backgrounds, and even developed a bit of music. I only finished one scene of animation because I canned the project. It was then that I knew nobody would see the short and it would be a massive waste of time. I had no following and no specific budget yet I spent 6 months working on it.

It's extremely important to find satisfaction in the work you do in some part for the work itself or for your own personal development. If you get caught up in whether or not you get popular it can really bog you down when you Could have a good thing going! From your list of tasks you'd worked on it sounds like you probably learned a lot! Even if it was just the basics of different programs, those are admirable things to know. What you create in the end may not break the internet, but if you learned anything during the creative process then you've improved yourself and therefore it was not a total waste of time. And even when it comes to being seen, there are groups and communities out there who are always hungry for new content and ideas. The internet is a Ginormous platform and you gotta put yourself out there to catch some attention.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Toniko. Recently, I've finished a personal project of mine which has taken me about 2 years of work. I am quite proud of the work that I've done and right now I'm taking a break from animating. I tend to have too many ambitions in my life when comes to getting a job that I can't decide which one I should have plus I don't know how to draw humans very well. Some have suggested me doing life drawing which I'm willing to do but still. I can't seem to find any good jobs in general since I live in the rural area in Australia plus I've been diagnosed with high-functioning autism which makes it even more difficult. I don't know if you have any suggestions since you live in the States. I've done a certificate for IT and I still can't find jobs for that and retail. Sorry if it got off-topic really quickly, I've learnt what my limits are when it comes to work and I don't think I can do another 30 minute long animation ever again. I also want maybe become a house musician or make a web comic for myself. I know it's a lot I'm asking and that I'm sharing a lot of personal details about myself. I just need a guide

Hi there thanks for reaching out. I can't imagine what its like to be in your situation - and the only thing I can advice is to just find people who are supportive of your passion. When I went to give a talk at a college, I met the class where most of its students were diagnosed with either autism or aspergers. Having a group where people can encourage and support each other is always good. If your other hobbies and passions also include being a musician or making comics, take that as an advantage to learn what you can put into your animation work. I also do encourage life drawing classes, for it helps you draw from life, understand structure, anatomy and form. It's also kind of relaxing too.

I like to do personal projects. I am going through a rough time. So I appreciate the encouragement given by the video. Thank you very much. I am considering starting a bestiary project. It is where I design lots of fantasy creatures. I am also considering starting a project developing the natural environments of the fantasy lands. There are maps and landscape pictures. Maybe this project can be referred to as an atlas project. Both of these projects are passion projects. I think the main benefit of passion projects is that they are fun. The enjoyment makes the work easier to handle psychologicly. Even the tough parts are better with the enjoyment. I didn't know there were the practical benefits given in the video. That is great. Things get even better. The puppy in the video is so adorable. 0:06 Aww! Speaking of canines, it is cool to have a part about wolves. I recently had a similar experience. I was working on a project where I write a story. It is a romantic story. The protagonist is a beautiful lady. The love interest is a creepy guy. I written the whole rough draft so far. Later on, I had many new ideas to make heavy revisions. In the rough draft the love interest is a human, named Angel. He wears a mask, and he is referred to as the "phantom". In the revision, the love interest changes to a werewolf, named Beau. I like werewolves a lot. They are my favorite horror monster. I think a creepy love interest is better if he is some kind of animal. Beau does retain some phantom characteristics. He takes the protagonist to a world underground. He is also good at music. Beau can sing and play keyboard musical instruments. The protagonist has her own musical career. Beau teaches her how to do that. The underground and music part is a phantom thing as opposed to something normally associated with werewolves. I have developed Beau to a mix of different things. It makes him a more origional character. I mainly write for the story. However I have also drawn the characters a lot. That leads to character design. As a werewolf, Beau has both a wolf and human form. I focus more on the wolf. Like you, I did end up studying real life wolves. This is to help develop a wolf character. I looked up reference photos on Google Images. I had a lot of fun with character design. It is really unusual to have a werewolf as a love interest. I also subvert the negative stereotypes of wolves. It is a fun challenge to take a wolf and make it look beautiful and even attractive. I have noticed that wolves in real life look slightly different than wolfs in fiction. Real wolves have a kind of natural and majestic beauty to them. In fiction the scary part is often exaggerated. When I design Beau, I try to bring out the pretty part and tone down the scary part. It is a refreshing new way to depict a wolf character.

What do you when the opportunity of making a personal project into work presents? When do you know its ready or if its for the better to keep it provate? I've tried some times making passion ideas into school projects in art school and it always backfires, in my opinion since I get good grades but dislike what i do with them to fit the homework. It doesn't happen as often when i make the idea for the assignment.

Depends on which art school you go to. Look for schools that have classes dedicated to animation and they'll very likely teach you from the ground up (I mean, that's what school is for). But be wary of schools that are more focused on the "Fine Arts" even if they have Animation courses. I've heard of some difficulties that come from that. Just be sure to do your research on the schools and teachers.

How do I get into the 2d animation industry ?

Have samples of your work that are as good as or better than what is being produced today. Figure drawing is good for an artist's portfolio. It shows that you're serious about drawing. There are many jobs in 2d animation besides artwork. Writing, legal, sales, marketing, accounting, human resources, and so forth. Be available. If you can, submit your portfolio and resume in person. Send the studio your professional contact information. Be professional in your demeanor.
