It's cool, enigmatic (and only slightly annoying) to point at yourself and other people to indicate who you're talking to or about. But what if your hands are full? Luckily, there are words for that.

linguistic chauvinism- but I did not make the rules👍👍👍 hahaha. I'm planning to visit Portugal next year, I'm trying to grasp at least the basics in learning your beautiful language. Thank you.

Olá Renato, muito obrigada. I think only speaking with a native speaker will help us use the right forms till then I'll enjoy eating pizza, pineapple or not. 😉

My question is similar to Joe Miller's. I am learning Brazilian Portuguese and primarily use "você". If I slip up when talking to someone from Portugal, how rude will I be considered?
@SimpletonPortuguese4 жыл бұрын
You won't be considered rude at all because people would recognize your Brazilian accent and know that "você" is the standard form of address in Brazil. "Você" is not exactly rude in Portugal. It's hard to explain. Nowadays, it can be seen either as "less-refined" or even as very mildly disrespectful. Perhaps you could compare it to calling people "you there" in English. But, again, none of this applies to a person speaking Brazilian Portuguese because people are aware of the different usage.

@@SimpletonPortuguese I have been living in Portugal for the past 14 months and learning the language at the same time. I hear the Brazilians using você all the time and no one seems disturbed. I have used it only a few times when I was completely flummoxed by how to express myself and gave in and used você. Nothing bad happened and I was understood. The problem for me is using the third person singular form of the verb to express “you” (formal). It seems totally counterintuitive. When I get muddled up, I just use the person’s name in the sentence. Also, I should add that vocês (plural) is used with the third person plural verb form to refer to “you” plural. Our beloved instructor is a more reliable source of information about that.

Se eu chego em Portugal e começar falando em Português Brasileiro aos locais, o que aconteceria?

You would be understood. Same language, different accent. :)

If you drop the pronoun when talking to a group of people, do you still use the third person plural conjugation of the verb then? Do you basically never use the second person conjugations?
@SimpletonPortuguese Жыл бұрын
Yes, you still use the third person plural conjugation. And no, we never use the second person plural conjugations.

Actually, the pronouns get easier to use with practice. Don’t sweat them.

Sorry about that. In English or in Portuguese? I will try to speak slower. Although, believe it or not, I am actually speaking slower in Portuguese for the videos than I do in real life.
