Unboxing Thomas Nelson's Sovereign Collection Revised Standard Version (RSV) Personal Size Bible with thumb index (ISBN 9781400337965, Style 7796BK). The cover is black genuine leather.
This is a 66 book (Protestant) Bible.
The Bible is printed in the Zondervan NRSV Typeface, an attractive 9.5 point font. Text is presented in a two-column format, except in poetic books, where a one-column format is used. References and text and translation notes appear at page bottom.
The words of Christ are in black ink. In the copy reviewed, the print is not uniformly dark throughout the volume. For instance, it is much darker in Job than in Romans.
Paper is reasonably opaque and matte (non-reflective, so sheen isn't a problem).
Six color maps are included. There is no concordance, but a topic index is provided.
The Bible is 8.94 x 5.88 x 1.56 inches (8 15/16 x 5 7/8 x 1 9/16 inches) in dimensions.
There are two ribbons, one red, one black. They are 10 mm (about 3/8 of an inch) wide.

@@RGrantJones I think nrsv is being discontinued now, and the woke and ultra-liberal nrsvue will take it's place. Hopefully RSV with complete Apocrypha will come back too.

@@RGrantJones RSV/NRSV/ESV is the broadest and most ecumenical of all family of Bible translations. Among Catholic only translations I think NABRE is similar. However, the new NRSV-UE IS pretty bad, as it is infiltrated by woke ideology. Too bad the beautiful NRSV translation will be replaced by ultra-liberal nrsvue.

@@RGrantJones I criticized NRSV-UE for being too liberal in my comments, and KZfaq deleted my comments. 😂 Too bad the beautiful NRSV will be replaced by dishonest NRSV-UE. I think RSV/NRSV/ESV are the most ecumenical and best family of Bible translation. Among Catholic only translations, NABRE is similar.

Just preordered the non thumb indexed genuine leather from Amazon for 30.99! As of now, the thumb indexing appears to be the sole factor in a price difference of $90. Glad to see another review - yours have been the most influential on my purchases.

Welcome back. I have an older RSV. Although it’s a smaller Bible, the print of that era is very readable. I’ll have to check it when I get home, but I think it may be the first revision from the original printing. This is a nice looking Bible. ✌️

While I am not an RSV fan, I always enjoy your videos. The Thomas Nelson Sovereign collection are well built Bibles, but they always seem to have glue issues with their ribbons. I have changed many ribbons over the years, but TNel were the ones I had most trouble with. Thanks again for the video Grant.

Oh my goodness never been more excited for a bible to come out. My daily reader is currently an oxford RSV but I have been wanting to switch to one with better formatting.

I preordered the black leather like cover edition, looking forward to using it! Really love the RSV translation these days. My go to use to be the NASB 95 and then for a year or more the LSB, but the last year or so has been the NRSV, ESV, RSV and even recently started to appreciate greatly the NLT and GNT as well. Interesting to read Scripture in those less literal versions

I have the nkjv wide margin sovereign. I know of the complaints of the initial quality. But honestly, I purchased it for 33$ in genuine leather and it is a bargain even with the overlapping numbers or faded lettering. Ha, it’s a pleasure to read, and remember bibles from Thomas Nelson from 2000 - still incredibly good- so good to hear your voice Dr. Jones.😊

I totally get that! Even for hardbacks, I have to catch them on sale. And I'm learning that I don't really need that Bible after all. BUT Amazon (at least in the United States) has it on pre-order for $ 40.98 + tax. Cause Amazon will tax you. This is the genuine leather and at a pretty big discout. .

Ive been appreciating the bibles with the Deuterocanonical/Apocryphal books the past two years. So i keep a pocket-sized RSVCE to compensate for when i dont have my 1560 Geneva or 1611 King James Bible around. My question is, which translation is the closest to the NASB? The RSVCE/2CE? or the NABRE?

I’m not an RSV guy, but have the KJV Sovereign and often recommend it. Disappointingly, I note that the RSV edition suffers the same issue as the KJV-the text running into the gutter. The one flaw in Bibles which are otherwise of exceptional quality for their price.

I have been waiting on this release. I still have my old red hardback from seminary, and my ordination Bible was a RSV as well. Both over 40 years ago! Thanks for posting, Dr. Jones.
