I was challenged to play a game of Europa Universalis 4 as a minor nation and take on only PU subjects to see how many I could get and how strong I could be with a bunch of Personal Unions! @@Theodisker In my Byzantium campaign, I went revolutionary republic having already a PU over Portugal and Great Britain(I kept the PU's, even with republic gov), and then I turned into a revolutionary empire so I could RM again( went revolutionary so I could play with the new mechanics and try the governments out for myself), but discovered that while I can use the "claim throne" and/or inherit thrones peacefully, I could no longer go to war to force PU's, the CB for it wasn't there, and other CBs didn't allow for it, even though in the diplo screen It said I was claiming their throne and I doublechecked, they had no heir. I had almost gotten Spain in a PU. Don't think I'll ever bother going revolutionary as a christian nation again.

This is so cool. I love going for PUs and have actually done a similar challenge in Voltaire's Nightmare, but it's nice to see a KZfaq Campaign doing it. pls, do continue the campaign :)

I have to say it, this is the best format in which a eu4 video can be done, I also love the tutorial-ish style of your video like explaining stuff and teaching the viewers! Most people dont want to watch 30 20 minute long videos, they want to watch 2 or 3 entertaining cut videos! If you do more videos like this or tutorials then I am sure that your channel will be able to be very sucessful!

Personal union only challenge ended in 1448 when salzburg was taken. I'd still like to see more though.

I had another person say that too, I don't see why I just said I wouldn't take vassals or have allies that aren't planned PUs. But maybe I should, after these challenges are done, do an 'Actually Only Personal Unions' where I have no other expansion except through PUs...

I miss when PU's we're really cool things that came about from player's looking for and taking opportunities and weren't handed out like candy in mission trees.

Me too, and to be fair I got a few through missions (especially early) but Brunswick, Wolgast and Denmark/Sweden/Norway were all done the old fashioned way

@@Quagersall yeah I'm not having a go at you mate I'm just kinda sad the direction the games gone. It can still be done the old fashioned way, the mechanic still exists but mission trees are really lame imo. You have 100% force limit? Here's perma claims on the whole continent and 5 PU CB's.

The best moments in my campaigns tend to almost always come from the random PU mechanics. Random Pan European war over whether me or my rival get to rule a random huge country that got unlucky with its heirs

Nice! I'm currently playing as great britain and got PU over France, Spain, Austria/Bohemia/Hungary (all together) and Russia and I'm the emperor of the protestant HRE hehe

I'm close to 5000 total dev now. Also got two electors as subjects. The year is 1600. Don't know if I'm going to be able to WC but I'll give it a shot. Monthly IA in the HRE just became positive so I'm optimistic.

@@maitrankdaarlen 1600 at 5000 dev you can world conquest no problem, just start killing the biggest nations and reducing everyone down to under 100% warscore while you build up absolutism and you have it in the bag.

I started with england managed to have france,austria and burgundy as PUs by 1490s and scotland as a vassal and dismantled the hre in 1506 :D

In my Bavaria campaign Burgundy was super stronk, conquered Provence, Savoy and held on to all the lowlands. So me as emperor got it all for free. But my AE is super high and I'm nearly bankrupt, because I just wanted to get the achievement as fast as possible. Turned out Bremen needs to own Werder, not Verden...I probably need to restart...

I play on normal, used to play Hard or Very Hard back when I had about 1k hours in, then realized it isn't really harder just more tedious most of the time and I don't find it fun to be 'challenged' in that way. But tbh as close as the Denmark war was I doubt I would have won it on Very Hard. :D

Easy, Wittlesbach is already on the Kalmar union and he tends to spread it a bit and I took diplomatic ideas and kept camping the lack of heirs alert :D

With Emperor DLC I have played 3 times in Europe, and I can't stop getting every game a lots of PUs. Since PUs are unique for Christians, they should be a common way to play in Europe :)

Marry them and hope they die without an heir (and that you are the largest of their royal marriages)

What’s the best way to set up your royal marriages & dynasty to form PUs?

Basically you get Diplomatic Ideas (so you can break royal marriages without a stab hit) and you just constantly check the alert for countries without heirs (and be aware who has your dynasty and might have a weak claimed heir) and just keep coming back. I routinely get at least 1 major PU in an EU4 game even not trying very hard you just have to be super vigilant!

Watching this makes me a little sad. I don't have any of the DLC so Bavarias mission tree only gives claims on the provinces in Franconia, Palatinate, Swabia and Baden and not a single Restoration of Union CB. I still managed to PU a large Brunswick a very large Bohemia and hopefully I'll get the now formed scandinavia as well but all of them have needed to be through war

Nice, the Union CBs on Brandenburg and Palatinate are super nice to get the Emperorship, but a Union over Scandinavia sounds super fun - I assume Denmark formed it if you can Union him (Wittlesbach and all)

@@Quagersall Indeed Denmark formed it, and I also managed to get a Wittelsbach on the commonwealth throne, though they've been mutilated quite a bit by ottomans/muscovy/scandinavia. Really looking forward to the coming subscription function to get the DLC's!

Yes its a big issue allies seem to always be in debt and enemies are sometimes easier to kill than they should be - but not always and sometimes they're harder because of their propensity to take loans to merc up.

If you are rivaled to Austria and he rejects your offer you get an claim on the Tirol Area and after that a force Union CB on Austria.

That was a double union, I got the CB on them via a special event that Munich gets. If I had vassalized I wouldn't have gotten inglostat (without having to vassalize them too)

I integrated Wolgast and then gave the land to Brandenburg simply for border sake :D I was also playing with the idea of making him Prussia if I can't get the Commonwealth as a PU.

@@yoshi9019 O wow, yeah you can't take Burgundy's swarm early, he's actually quite powerful. I've seen him beat Austria/Hungary with a few allies to take Liege in this patch more regularly now.

So why is it called Personal Unions ONLY and then you still conquer provinces normally? Am I missing something?

Because Personal Unions Only refers to no other subject types... But to be fair several people have commented something like this so I think I'm gonna have to do a follow-up challenge like 'Actually Only Personal Unions' or something where I'm not allowed to take land directly just make, inherit, restore, etc. Personal Unions :D

I go slow and religiously monitor the disputted succession alert, use Diplomatic and break royal marriages frequently. Also starting as Von Wittlesbach helped a bunch. But yes luck is a big factor (also I didn't show the like 12 times I failed to get a PU over Spain for instance)

How did you get so many countries with the same dynasty?

Diplomatic Ideas so I can make a bunch of marriages and break them. Also I started with Von Wittlesback which is all over Bavaria, The Palatinate and Denmark at the beginning. Denmark was the one who spread it to Wolgast for instance, I just took advantage :D

This is nice and all, but I am a bit curious as to what you set as rules, because annexing Salzburg is basicially failing this if you only go py PUs.

I was just doing only PUs for subjects no other restrictions. But several people have assumed that meant no other allies or taking land should be part of the rules. Maybe I will do a follow up campaign where I'm more strict with it.

Not a mod, base game mechanics - you can't do it in ironman mode and you need an xbox controller but look up 'enable_game_controller' for the eu4 console

@@Quagersall Watching these playthroughs I can't help feeling frustrated because DLC's give players a much wider set of tools for enjoying the game in their chosen play style. However I refuse to spend $400-ish on a seven year old game.

It's München my understanding that's the German word for the city, I sometimes will interchange Wien and Vienna as well, just a weird thing my brain does.
