This video discusses the importance of independence for residents of care homes. The context of the video is the balancing of risks and freedoms for one resident. Learn more: www.scie.org.uk/personalisati...
Personalisation means thinking about care and support services in an entirely different way. This means starting with the person as an individual with strengths, preferences and aspirations and putting them at the centre of the process of identifying their needs and making choices about how and when they are supported to live their lives. It requires a significant transformation of adult social care so that all systems, processes, staff and services are geared up to put people first.

The decisions here didn't only promote independence, they were also made in the best interest of the resident. Very instructive.

Totally agree with you their, back before I realised I wanted to work with children with special needs and mental health problems.i used to work for a care agency and when I was sent to many homes their were staffs who don't talk to the residents when I asked then if they could help me assist one resident in a wheel chair to the toilet they just say the resident has dementia they don't need the toilet, not also in the care homes I was assigned by the agency but one care home on my street where the placement team at my college assigned me

Private management of nursing and care homes can put elderly and sick people at risk more often than elderly people putting themselves at risk or others. Do not depend on ratings of the likes of regulators from Care Quality commission

How can you be independent in a care home? It’s group living. You’ll always be talked out of what you want to do for the common good.

I'm studying caring (well, procrastinating rn), and the idea is to take their strengths and their preferences, and support them in those while also creatively thinking about how we can approach challenges. Client first. It's their life, we are just supporting

Now I am age 85 and living on my own in a two-bed bungalow with two 30 mins care every day. I am aware of care quality which varies from carer to carer because carers are angels, but not all carers are angels, which mean elderly people; le are often abused if the comp[; lain about their care or carers because many carers are carers to justify receiving social benefits instead of being trained with a university training with a keen interest in caring for elderly people.

I'm so sorry Joseph, I really hope you have never been abused. It's your life and you will be able to report it to someone, even if that's to another family member or your support co-ordinator. I'm not sure where you are but caring in Australia is taken very seriously and if anyone is taking advantage of their power like that, it should be taken from them. Keen for a reply if you get around to it!
