Thank you Simon for doing justice to a controversial hero of 20th-century Russian Romantic Music ... Only time will teach those who discredit Sergei´s contribution to classical music ... Let us not forget: even the great Johann Sebastian Bach was discredited as an old-fashioned composer in his days, until a certain Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy some 80 years after his death rediscovered and exposed his universal and time-enduring significance ... Many people need time to learn ... Just like then, for many critics their lifetime is not enough for music ... However, great music is enough for a lifetime, if not for their lifetime, then for many more lifetimes, at times when critics will long be forgotten and music lovers celebrate the true masters of music ...

I very much enjoyed connecting with Rachmaninov’s music and life events through this picturesque video. It would seem he was blessed with public recognition in his lifetime which afforded him the luxury to design and build that charming house right on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The very place where A Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini op. 43 was conceived and written.

I recommend reading Shostakovich's final memoir "Testimony", dictated to his young musicologist friend shortly before he passed on. Shostakovich knew and worked with ALL the great Russian composers of that long era of musical brilliance, and all are described here, beginning with the end of Czarist Russia and through Lenin, Stalin and the rest. Rachmaninoff and his other contemporaries are an important part of the story.

Re posting a reply that errorously went Under a different comment Thank you for this lead I will seek this out as I have struggled over the years to find any info or account of substance for pianist teacher composer Alberto Jonas , who if one looks at his circle /known circle (at least that is easily found and documented) one can find more than a few heavy hitters , I think he is one of the last "secrets hiding in plain sight" of that golden era and I often wonder what non musical factors have conspired to keep him on the fringes of obscurity , but I'm excited to read into that memoir more as other names should hopefully come up (Eiges, Feinberg, Bortkiewicz (thankfully seems some resurgence of his works lately folks should not miss the 2nd sonata which is like a love letter to the Rachmaninoff concerto 2 and the ballade has many ideas from the sonata too or vice versa ) Cheers Sorry this reply mis posted this should have replied to M entera and my response to your reply just poof disappeared sorry , but cheers nonetheless

It’s said that Rachmaninoff played the Schloezer Etude daily. Master of Masters indeed. SR was asked about the fiendishly difficult (but above all beautiful and concise) Scriabin Etude no. 5 op. 42 he said “ difficult Etude, I spent forty minutes on it”. If scenic Switzerland doesn’t stimulate your creativity nothing will. This scenery also clearly inspired the Josef Marx Piano concerto in E.

Thank you for yet another video. Now I understand why 🎹🎶Alexander Malofeev (21) shed some tears when he played Rachm 3 in Frankford on Sept. 25th 2022. Because he has to fly to Europe+America+Asia he had to move to Berlin, but he misses his Moscow. (Amsterdam 2022)

We still have audio recordings of Rachmaninov playing his own pieces, like the 2nd piano concerto. Why not include a tidbit of his actual playing? It would add to the depth of this presentation.

Because this is an absolute bargain basement doc - I guess it would have cost them something. Likewise for them to acknowledge the key location in Rachmaninoff's life and music - Ivanovka - rather then just showing us clips of Moscow. I posted below with some youtube links to much better Rachmaninoff docs.

Most of the programs presented here in this magnificent series, are delightful, charming and educational on a very exalted level. But, this one episode completely broke my heart with joy and musical passion. And yet, I was waiting for a taste of the piano concertos, The Rach-1 or 2 or even, the killer Rach-3. But no. No recordings?

We can visit Rachmaninoff's grave in Kensico Cemetery, located in the town of Valhalla, New York, about 25 miles north of Manhattan. A Russian Orthodox cross marks the family plot, where he is buried along with wife Natalie and their daughter Irina Wolkonsky. Listen to 22:39 in this video.

One potential nit, that photograph he indicates as Rachmaninov and Czar Nikolas II doesn’t look like the Czar at all to me. Dies anyone have any background on that? Or did I mishear this?

I think that was Czar Nicholas. I have read books and I recall that he was quite chastened towards the end.

Yes I came here to say the same thing! That picture looks absolutely nothing like all other photos I’ve seen of Nicholas II. And I don’t think Simon was joking, as there was nothing at all indicating a joke, subtle or otherwise. Perhaps he was just misinformed as to who was in the photo.

ラフマニノフさんの曲大好き。お顔が比較的欧米というよりアジア系の印象も。ラフマニノフさんの曲の響きの根本にあるという教会の鐘。ロシアの教会の鐘の音を生で聴いてみたかった。この動画に出てくる教会？の内装は意外と派手な印象。絵画とか金色のレイアウトがドイツとかとは違う重みの印象だけど。自然の中での鐘の音と、建築物が密集している中での鐘の響き方は違うだろうけど。

At 19:48 ..definitely not Tsar Nicholas ll . Land for the Villa Senar was purchased in the 1930’s( same garden table and bench in other photos from same time) The Tsar along with his whole family and staff were long dead by then, and of course the photo itself just doesn’t look like the Tsar. Smacks Perspectives credibility.

The narrator claims at 19:49 that this was a photo of Rachmaninoff and Czar Nicholas 2....absolutely false statement as the Czar had already been killed by the Bolsheviks in 1918 nearly 10 years earlier, I do not know who is pictured with Rachmaninoff but it is not the Czar!!!

This 'Classical Desitination' series is just a travel advertising series, isn't it. There is no real meaningful info in it about the subject that I can see. The kind of stuff you get on a tour.
