Sal Blasker They weren’t shallow-it was good advice. It was an unfortunate misunderstanding. She should’ve made it clear that she was breaking off the engagement temporarily, and he should’ve understood that getting married while penniless was imprudent.

This would be the perfect adaption if not for the run lola run type scene,, the awful and obviously applied blusher they used on Sally Hawkins, the unflattering hairstyle they gave her and that will he or won't he kiss her scene! This scene is beautifully acted and touching but in the end it is a visual portrayal and I wish the badly applied distracting makeup on Ms Hawkins couid be digitally removed. Some commentators here say she is plain or ugly but I think she was just poorly served by the makeup people and perhaps the lighting.

Oh I agree! I would highly recommend the book. You will not be disappointed. You think you were crying watching this? When I read the book, I sobbed and my heart ached for Anne and Wentworth.

Julie Julie it’s clearly stated in the book but not in the movie. Captain Wentworth realized that Anne was tired and requested his sister to take her home

She was tired, cold, plain looking, her dress was wet & muddy she was completely exhausted. Moving in no attempt to please others she was so tired. She didnt have to perform or flatter him. His real feelings, protective feelings for her In the book suddenly burst out. It was a revelation to her in the book, that he loved her still unconditionally, he'd just been angry about the past.

There is a book called Captain Wentworth's Diary by Amanda Grange that recounts the circumstances leading up to the movie and she stays pretty faithful to Austen, in my opinion. Great read.

I want to buy the movie as well, but in the US it is high priced and listed as "repackaged". I notice all the clips look poor video quality as well, and have yet to see anything resembling HD. Did you ever find anything?

Are you sure they weren't pirated? I borrowed a copy of the DVD from my local library (love libraries - here in South Australia you can request items from any public library in the state) and the quality was very good. Not sure it was HD, but nothing noticeable on a widescreen tv. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that the BBC dvd version shouldn't have been as bad quality as you described, because it certainly wasn't that poor on the copy I had. This adaption is certainly the better of the two persuasion movies. They really captured the tension so much better than the other did.

@ na y - Maybe it was pirated. I suspect as much myself. I bought it new off of Amazon here in the US and in part of the description it says: "repackaged" whatever that means. It is ok for some scenes, but others are not good quality. I still enjoy watching it though.

A lot of the dialogue in both versions is from.the book, including this. The only difference is the ending of the Ciaran Hinds version is much closer to the book. I like both versions but I prefer Rupert Penry Jones as Captain Wentworth.

True love has little to do with physical beauty and we are all beautiful... However, I dont understand why it is so often assumed that anne wasn't beautiful anymore. Sir Walter's description of Anne can't be reliable considering he found almost everyone ugly and he disliked the fact she didn't look like him. I think captain Wentworth can't be more reliable than Sir Walter because he was too angry to admit anything and admited later that for him she could never fade... The only bloom she lost was caused by grief. Which is why it is said she lost her bloom early. In bath everyone found her prettier than Elizabeth. In her youth she was described as very pretty. Despite her sadness, she can't have lost that much she was only 27 after all....

If this actress is not considered pretty, I can’t imagine what you think, when you look in the mirror.

Kieron Hinds and Amanda Root were a much better match. He looked believable as a Sea Captain that commanded a ship out at sea, in the elements, and had engaged in warfare. And Amanda looked very petite and feminine beside him. I think they were going for the Mr Darcy dreamboat look here.
