Persuasion is Jane Austen's last novel, published in December 1817, although the title page is dated 1818. The story centers on Anne Elliot, a 27 year old Englishwoman whose family moves to reduce their debt by renting their home to an Admiral and his wife. As it turns out, the Admiral's wife's brother, Captain Frederick Wentworth, was engaged to Anne in 1806. The engagement was broken after Anne was persuaded to end the relationship. Now Anne and Captain Wentworth, both single, meet again after an eight year separation, setting the scene for humorous encounters and a second chance at romance.

No film adaptation can match the richness of Austen's writing... but 1995 film version with Amanda Root comes closest to the mood and feeling of the book. Loved that version!

From Bride of Cobb: For years I wonder why this was my favorite Austin book, and then it hit me: Anne hardly speaks 50 lines. The whole of the plot is driven by Anne's secret musings. Brilliant!

The issue here (if an issue it is), is that that letter was written by a woman, imagining what a man should feel and say. No man is as perfect as a man imagined by a woman such as Jane Austen.

I listened to these books and the readers have been too old for the young characters. I'm old myself so I dont feel like an ageist, but it just seems the age of this reader is very believable as the younger characters and does a fine job with the older characters and the male characters.

I do have reading glasses but basicly I don't read books any more due to my blury vision and small print. but i listen to audio 📚 mostly they sometimes send me off to sleep 😴 when i close my eyes at night before i go to sleep.

The "elegant stupidity" of private parties - I peed a little laughing. Really, Austen was fearless. She poked savage fun at the powerful of her day. Absolutely brutal.

This is why I find Austen so lightweight. She is "fearless" and "brutal" in mocking the foppishness of an elite echelon of society. Meanwhile, the working class who scarcely get a mention in her work confront the real emergencies of poverty, disenfranchisement, injustice and inequality. Dickens changed the world while Austen changed her frock.

It is true that working class people were hardly on Jane Austen's radar. Moreover, although a lot of Austen scholars and devotees focus on the stupidity and arrogance of some of her upper class characters like Sir Walter Elliot, they often ignore the fact that her portrayal of the middle class (to which most of the academics belong) is far from flattering because her middle class characters are also a mixed bag. Some we can admire like Mr and Mrs Gardiner, Captain Wentworth, and Mr Weston, but others are socially insecure and unpleasant like Mr and Mrs Elton and the haughty, spiteful, Bingley sisters who despite their high society lifestyle are from a middle class background. In addition, Mrs Bennet, although married to a member of the gentry, is a daft woman of middle-class origin who talks about her desire for her daughters to marry rich men when rich men are present and does not grasp the seriousness of her youngest daughter’s marriage to one of Austen’s most sinister characters, an unprincipled man who was almost certainly of lower birth than “uppercrust twits” like Sir Walter Elliot. Hence if we are supposed to conclude that Austen had a negative view of the upper class (a very popular view) her portrayal of the middle class is certainly not universally positive. Moreover, according to some Austen scholars we can learn a lot about baronets from her portrayal of Sir Walter Elliot. However, if one of the characters in an Austen novel had been an arrogant self-absorbed member of academia we can take it for granted that most academics who specialise in English literature would not conclude that the character was truly representative of them and their world.

@@cacambo589 Jane Austen wrote with penetrating skill and authenticity about what she knew and observed in her daily life. I doubt she was often exposed to true poverty as a middle class woman in fairly prosperous market towns in the countryside. Truly poor landless people were moving to cities in her day looking for jobs at the advent of the industrial revolution. Your negative opinions of her work show a bias and privilege that blinds you to the reality of what her life was likely like. You remind me of Greta Thunberg telling the girl in Bangladesh to fill her bathtub up with water before a cyclone strikes to better prepare. The girl replied that no-one in her village had a bathtub or running water, and those are things only rich people have. Your venom reveals ignorance and a lack of heart or insight. Probably a bridgerton fan.

Really? Although Ms. Clay was a bit of a manipulative schemer, she did have children to think of. Certainly, Sir Walters flaws are much worse than hers yet you revel in her debasement by a terrible man? Would be interesting to know if your were born a sociopath or became one? Any plans to shoot up a mall?

With Miss Austen's great works, it's difficult to choose a favorite. Persuasion is mine. She writes with such clarity, pragmatism; yet still with detail and feeling. I say to myself that Holy Grace was on her, and in her excellent talent. Jane Austen will always be an exceptional writer, and personal favorite in my mind.

Ms Savage, I have always been turned off by Jane Austin and George Eliot, and other classic female writers, so I spent all my years reading Dickens, Wells, Doyle etc. Now hearing you read them I see what I robbed myself of as a result of my prejudice.

Sir Walter Elliot is one of many fictional baronets who appear in English literature and Jane Austen tells us that his family had been baronets since the first year of Charles II, who became king in 1660. In commentary on Jane Austen’s novels baronets are sometimes dismissed as small fry because a baronetcy is the lowest hereditary title. Indeed, it has been said that baronets were kept at arm’s length by people with grander titles and socialized almost entirely with untitled country gentlemen. However, many baronets belonged to ancient landed families and owned very large estates. Moreover, baronets were often linked by marriage to people with higher titles, including some of the grandest families in the land. For example, in 1797 Sir John Menzies married Lady Charlotte Murray, the eldest daughter of the Duke of Atholl, and the first wife of the Duke of Roxburghe (another contemporary of Jane Austen) was the daughter of a baronet. Furthermore, Kitty, the Countess of Carnarvon who died in 1813 and lived at Highclere Castle (better known as the location of ‘Downton Abbey’), was the daughter of the eldest son of a baronet and Emily, Countess Cowper, a famous high society figure in Regency England, was the granddaughter of two baronets. Finally, it was fairly commonplace for untitled country gentlemen to marry the daughters of aristocrats. For instance, in 1817 Mark Milbank married 20-year-old Lady Augusta Henrietta Vane, the daughter of the Earl of Darlington. Jane Austen was of course aware of such marriages and one of her most famous characters, Mr Darcy, is part gentry and part aristocracy, for his mother was the daughter of an earl.

In the first year of Charles II baronetcies could be obtained by anyone with access to £1000 in ready cash. It is also notable that the people who had access to such sums that could be put to such a purpose in the first year of Charles II generally regarded the Vicar of Bray as far too fixed in his political and religious opinions.

In 1660, £1,000 was of course a great sum of money. Indeed, it was still a lot of money in Jane Austen's day. In Sense and Sensibility, for example, the Ferrars family own an estate in Norfolk worth £1,000 per annum.

Well the thing is, a baronetcy is a purchased distinction, and that does make all the difference. It is heritable, but does not make one a member of the peerage. Of course, barons are still wealthy, landed aristocrats so they are still good society, but Sir Walter being so vain as to that title marks him to the reader as ridiculous. Mister Darcy, for example, is not actually a titled nobleman, although his mother (and Lady Catherine) was the daughter of an earl. He could later be egnobled if he so choose- but alas, him and his late father do not seem to have chosen! And yet who has more dignity and distinction between him and Sir Walter?

Sir Walter Elliot is certainly a pompous fool but he is a figment of Austen's imagination. She might, of course, have based based him on a baronet (or baronets she met) but he is certainly not a stereotypical baronet.

Of course, the book is better than the movie. Got all the details that were missed and clarification of Mr. Elliott's and Mrs. Clay's ambitions and relationship. The best part was the total irony of the trick played on Sir Walter and Miss E. Elliott. Their snooty disdane for Anne was thrown in their faces when the people they preferred over their own family played them where everyone could see it. Pride goes before destruction. 😉

Different versions are interesting to consider however....the 2007 Persuasion is a real work of art, visually, casting and tempo, but the 1995 version is true to the text in ways the 2007 is not. Similar comparisons can be made of other Jane Austen productions. One can indulge oneself for weeks. (Had to erase "binge").

In tone, perhaps only Roger Michell's stunning 1995 film version even touches the novel, though 2007 comes close. It's still my favorite Austen -- and that's saying something -- and this audiobook is without spot or blemish. Magnificent.

I have Jane Austen’s leather bind books as well as other versions and all the movies. I love all the stories. They say she was ahead of her time and it’s true because back then women had very few rights. Love the painting. I have a tapestry in this style hanging in the dining room. I think it’s called expressionism.

This is the Impressionist style . Very lighthearted and uplifting. Expressionism came later and attempted to convey emotion. K

Just tried to watch the new netflix "Persuasion"---abhorent in most every way. Cinematography and great costumes and pretty people do not make up for someone pulling down the bedsheets and doing an Amber Heard on the source material.

Such a beautiful voice narrating these classics! It’s hard for me to listen to any other Jane Austen audiobooks by anyone else :( please tell me I can find Emma and Northanger Abbey by her!

The 1980’s Persuasion is my favorite Austen film of all. Second is Keira Knightley’s, Pride and Prejudice, then Ana-Taylor Joy and Mia Goth’s Emma and then Sense and Sensibility. That’s a good movie binge day!

I’m just learning English and listening to many pearls of English literature from librivox and magpie audio, but this narrator is very hard to comprehend for me.

I find she talks very fast. I am a native english speaker but chose to slow the narrator down to 0.9 speed so it wasn't so rushed a reading: It is possible to slow down the narrator by clicking the cog and then selecting "Playback speed".

Not so. Anne saw Wentworth and was concerned so did Lady Russell, but Lady Russell was looking for the window curtains her friend had told her to watch for. Your juvenile joke is not worthy of an Austen fan, if you are.

How can Jane Austen, in almost every novel, have a character that I love to hate? They are written so differently, but have such annoying traits, that I literally cringe when they speak! Emma's father with his gruel, Mr. Collins (and Mrs. Bennet and Lydia), the aunt in Mansfield Park, Mary, in this book, drive me mad! Is it good writing or does Austen caricature them, to make them so irritating? It is not that they are evil, but clueless and selfish, that grates so much. I guess I have run into one or two people in real life that are similar... but maybe not in such concentrated doses as you get in reading a book straight through?

I wish this was just a tad slower, that's all ...it feels slightly rushed and I'm trying to listen to it while I'm laying down with my eyes closed ; but it does not render a relaxed feel .

Am the same. I slowed it down using the settings and it helped. It wasn't too slow; just about right for listening to while relaxing.

D Watson Shortly after that I figured out how to slow them down but that night I was just too exhausted and irritated and ended up not listening to it... also I can't remember now if this is the one where the narrator in the beginning had a snippy tone of voice which wasn't needed... if that was here it got on my nerves. I think I ended up going to the prsw 100 channel where he has very professional quality travel videos and a great voice for narration . I may have even gone to the Obsolete Oddities Channel ,another gentleman with a great British accent and wonderful voice for narration all those subject matter is usually kind of sad ,bizarre or creepy . I know a lot of people use the ASMR channels to help them sleep but it doesn't do anything for me for some reason the sound of somebody with a nice voice talking will help me doze off .

@@AlisonLBK Under the screen on the far right you will see a 'gear' looking thing. Click on it an you will see choices, Speed is one of them. Click on that and you can speed it up or slow it down. I find .75 is slow enough - after that it drags way too much.

There are some others. I did a search for "good readers on Librivox" and got a pretty long list. Then I go to Librivox, look for those readers, listen to a sample and see if I agree. Karen is one of the best, for sure. Sometimes the problem is that they put American readers on iconic British books and visa versa... which just ruins the book.

@@mosart7025 : I agree that Karen Savage is is one of the few Librivox readers I can tolerate. I can't listen to British books read by Americans. PG Wodehouse is especially ruined when read in in an American accent.

There is a custom slider in playback speed that lets you have a lot more control. I usually set her at .95 or .90. Before I found that I tried .75, but it was so draggy.
