I love this! I call this concept an "anti-read," and it's something I learned to do playing fighting games. Sometimes you mess up so often, that you recognize you're conditioning your opponent with your errors. So you can save that information for later and transform that mistake into a good action.

I once heard that to win Rock Paper Scissors, you want to lose a thousand times by always picking paper until everyone knows you are always going to pick paper. Then when it really matters, you pick rock.

Amazing how many of these hits were identical. Heathcock goes again and again with the long point attacks into prep and either gets them or gets parried nearly 50-50 but keeps doing the same thing. The point about reactive fencing was interesting, I think it favours the fencer with the faster reactions and I'm not sure it was clear who that was in this bout.

I think in this bout Heathcock had much faster reactions, but Eicchorn was observing and planning more. While Heathcock could watch and react, letting their strong instinctual responses get them touches Eicchorn recognized that his actions created openings that Heathcock would snatch up with instinctual (identical) reactions which can be answered after understanding what action is made. To add in this observe and plan style of play giving up points for information also functions to condition the opponent to be more likely to continue using their seemingly successful strategy of react and respond. Incredibly smart stuff from Eicchorn.

The point attack is great, provided you don't use it over and over. And yes it is possible to disengage a point attack in sabre.

What it really came down to is how the Peruvian kid won in the box, he wasn't able to beat him with attack on prep so he used Heathcock's over aggressiveness against him getting more parry-reposts. Heathcock barely got any. Good example of how to beat an overly aggressive fencer and how to win the match in the box when you can't get the attack on prep over your opponent.

Sabre died when they killed the second intention attack. Sabre at its best was 2005.

Lots of stupidity going on then. Video refereeing was being piloted at WC to try and deal with biased refs against Asian fencers. 2nd intention Is live and kicking now, you just have to be quicker and better at it.

LONG LIVE THE PARRY RIPOSTE! This is all that's left in this era of the nearly anorexic body types taking over the sport with their, everything is attak in prep, except for when their lanky asses actually pull distance and then start a long holding attack taking advantage of the fact that the timing on the box prohibits them from having a dose of their own medicine when they come hopping down the strip like a half drunk kangaroo. I hope every one of those parry ripostes was well felt not only by the other fencer but by all the coaches out there raising the next generations of fencers who only know how to stick the point out and punish people due to current rule interpretations. At lower levels, these current trends in interpreting priority, teaching methods and styles of attacking are literally destroying the sport.

In HEMA, Historical European Martial Arts, fencing mostly utilizes Parry Ripostes. I recently joined a HEMA club as a smallsword and spadroon fencer, and I had to Parry much more than I was in Olympic-style fencing. And this is coming from a skinny fencer. lol
