Our once great Empire was struck by a devastating plague… will you answer the call to save it?
Once standing tall and great, we now need to rediscover and rebuild our fallen cities. There are still survivors among the ruins - we must take them in our care and cure them. In order to stay ahead of the plague, we must implement new inventions and technologies. Our influence will expand as we rebuild, but the plague will still lurk in the shadows, ready to strike when we least expect it. Once it does, it will be difficult to adapt, but we will survive. In addition to the procurement of important resources, our imperative will be to get the plague under control.
In Pest, players slip into the roles of leaders of the ruling houses of a once great empire that was struck by a cataclysmic plague. The plague has left much of the empire in ruins, so now it is up to the players to restore it to former glory.
Pest is played in 7 rounds. Each round before players take their turn, a plague card will be revealed which shows how the plague will spread in that round. On their turn, players will be able to select among many actions on their player board using a unique action selection system. Thus, players will be able to move their containment team on the board, quarantine and cure infected people, rebuild, assign workers, harvest for resources and more.
As their house influence grows, players will be able to play more actions, generate more resources, and house more people. This will bring forth new technological advancements which are much needed to get the plague under control.
The game ends after the 7 round is over and players count their final amount of Renown (victory points). The player with the most Renown is the winner and declared savior of the empire!

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

Id also recommend Yokohama (which looks busier than it is) and the underated Royal Palace ( by carson city and troyes designer Xavier Georges) both of which play similar to instanbul but have much more meat to them.

Well... the darkness of the middle ages may actually have had more to do with volcano erruptions ( Icelandic and/or perhaps North American) leaving a couple years without summer. The global temperature drops and crop failures would have pushed rodents into the cities carrying the plague and thus contributing to the emergence of the Justianian Plague. Wiki Volcanic winter of 536 ( Late Antique Little Ice Age). Dark indeed. Check out Sideprojects 536: The Worst Year Ever video as well. Sorry can't link to the other video. search it.

When I saw the photos of this from all the ESSEN posts I was really keen, but the price point seams a little high for me, so I think I have to wait until retail for this one, but I hope they do well

For me in Australia is $162 with delivery and yes in KS terms that’s pretty cheap, but you can’t really compare price points from this to a game like Elden ring, for me what I value is the extra stuff you get added on with purchasing through KS and the middle city minis isn’t enough of a pull for that price if it goes to retail here it would be cheaper. It looks like a really fun game but for me it’s just a bit too high for what you get

Thanks for the review. This game has nice components and great art style and theme. It’s way under the radar due to elden ring I’ll watch your video and see if I want this instead of the very expensive Elden ring

Probably because it's just a prototype. Although I'd be fine with sturdy boards, even without layered cutouts. They tend to work just fine in most euro(-ish) games.

@@Coltis1 check the Kickstarter campaign. Cardboard tokens, Carcassonne Meeples right next to the cool buildings and no dual layered. Gameplay looks nice though. But I had hoped for more.

@@Carsten_de_1981 Yeah, it is a little let down for me too. Like Alex here, the gameplay is totally for me BUT couse it is a kickstarter game i would like to have a little extra deluxe factor. Meeple screening, double layer cardboard, maybe resorce upgrade to meeples or minis, anything really... i personally pledged it to help it along and i really like the gameplay but....

In some countries they call it the same thing. Or they only call certain areas dark ages. So Greece, Middle east etc. Which I think is actually quite silly seeing as they did great things during the "dark" ages.

You beat me to it. The dark age is generally the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the arrival of feudal kingdoms when written history began to become prevalent again. Fun 😇

I disagree with that. In my opinion a preview is when you are showcasing a game, and not giving an actual opinion. A review is still a review regardless of what stage the product is in.
