Hi, SilentEarthMovers, Yes, there is a specified "Beam" pattern emitted from the Infrared emitter that passes through a Lens. These beams are what determine when the alarm should activate when something passes through them in a specified time interval, thus triggering an alarm condition. The installation manuals for motions will usually have a diagram of the "Beam" pattern.

PIR motions have either a fresnel lens or mirror optics that break the incoming infrared energy into a pattern which is then "seen" by the pyro-electric sensor. These are described as beams, or sometimes fingers, and are usually shown in a diagram in the installation instructions for the motion detector. You are correct that a passive infrared motion detector does not actually emit anything when detecting IR energy. It's everything else (furniture, carpet, people, pets, drapes, etc.) that do the emitting. The PIR simply interprets what it is "seeing" and decides whether or not it's moving.

The motion sensors would not be a cause for concern. These sensors would be used to detect movement while the alarm they are connected to is armed.
