I came home from work and went out the back to let the dogs in. One was fine and ran up the stairs, the other couldn't walk up the stairs and was wobbly on her legs. I brought her in, which wasn't easy as she was a bull terrier and weighed a ton. She wouldn't stand up, and her eyes were bloodshot and half closed, though she was happy, not distressed in any way. I rushed her to the vet, and all she could find was that her belly sounded a bit slushy. She said she had eaten something, but there was no food left out for them to eat so I couldn't imagine what it was. Then I remembered the plum tree, but plums wouldn't do this surely. Wrong! She'd eaten fermented plums off the ground, and she was drunk as a sailor. The vet thought it was hysterical.

I’m not criticizing you at all, but why is it heartwarming when someone just does the right thing that they should do and are supposed to do? A lot of these people we saw in the upload are probably strapped for cash and living paycheck to paycheck but they make it work There’s credit cards, there’s payment plans, there’s the Humane Society and the ASPCA and the neuter scooter which also does basic vet care for less money. If someone is strapped, they can call Animal Control and find out where to find less expensive medical care. We carry computers in our pockets now, so there’s no excuse for not figuring something out

Great story 😆 Fun fact, dogs don't perceive spiciness like we do. They have way less "spicy" receptors in their mouth. Most won't even notice it until they've had way too much. Some won't notice it at all, until it hits their digestive system and causes pain there.

That dog that kept vomiting because he didn't like his owner's nephews and/or nieces probably wasn't showing disgust. It was probably induced by stress, which might be a result of how the kids played with him or acted around him. This is just a guess, though.

In my first job after graduating, I shared a house with a young veterinarian, who also had started her first job. This was in a small town on the edge of a large recreation area; lots of lakes and forest. One Saturday night, around midnight, the phone rings. I hear her answer it (I’m not surprised. She had told me she was “on call”) and a few minutes later she leaves the house and drives off. The next day she tells me the story. A family (including kids and dog) from the “big city” had arrived at their vacation rental late Friday, and all day Saturday the whole family had lots of fun on the lake and beach. That evening, the dog started showing discomfort, and by midnight he couldn’t stand or even move his backend. Fearing the worst, the vet did a thorough exam including asking questions of the family. “How much exercise does the dog usually get? What did he do all day before he became uncomfortable?” The diagnosis? Badly sprained tail. He had never wagged his tail so much, so hard, or for so long as he did that day at the lake.

My co-worker got a rescue cat for her son for his 8th birthday. All went well for a few days then the cat stopped using the litter box and was instead emptying herself all over the house. $175 in vet bills for tests and so on and the cat got a clean bill of health but continued her behavior. I worry about someone taking care of an animal, when they assume that the animal Hass to be female to have nipples. I worry about them having a cat when they don’t know cats go into heat… Like don’t most people research before adopting? Or at least understand that male creatures can have nipples?
@stephg2867

@@spiralrose thing is, I rather have somebody come (even if they wake me up in the middle of the night) and it turns out to be nothing, then somebody not come because they think its nothing and then the animal ends up dying from something we could have treated if found early (kidney failure in boy cats after not being able to pee is the most common). And the happens unfortunately too much. I rather have somebody come in for nothing than risking their pets life because they come too late. These are the real bad owners.

My childhood dog had a bad habit of eating sewing needles. One time my dad was petting her and pricked his finger on a needle that emerged through her neck! Another time she kept coughing and wheezing. Mom took her to the vet, who found a threaded needle embedded in the roof of her mouth. She had swallowed the thread, but since it was still attached to the needle, it was hung up in the back of her throat! That was an expensive visit.

Had 5 horses and those for decades. Big Quarter Horse named Crazy (sweet boy) was laying on the ground, pawing and groaning--obviously an emergency case of colic. Whole family fought to get him upright and his head was hanging but we got the vet called and waited. We were walking him around in the dark, freezing cold night, hoping he made it. The vet came out and checked him. Said his gut sounded good, heart rate was up only a little and it could be gas. The tail then went up and the loudest, longest fart came out....it was a $350 fart. He farted a few more times and then went back to his feed before the ink on the check was dry. It was the most dramatic thing I'd ever seen and I've seen many horses with colic.

Grain free food helps keep the weight down. They get full faster, and don't eat as much. In the wild they don't eat corn or wheat. Best brand I found that my cat likes is Crave, or Purina True Instincts Grain Free. It's about $ 18 for a 6 pound bag, but it's worth it. Otherwise read the label, if the first 3 ingredients contain corn, or other grains, it's not a good food.

@@zammmerjammer Cats and dogs absolutely get depressed, especially when it comes to social relationships. They also often take joy in personal accomplishments, and can feel sad or even depressed when they fail at something. Being beaten and dominated by a rival often hurts their self confidence and general mood. They're not as complex and subtle as human beings, but all mammals share similar mental processes. That's partly why they come across as either very dramatic or very stoic

@@zammmerjammer interestingly, lobsters have a saratonin system that reacts in that exact way, "I lost a fight, so I am now depressed", humans have a very similar system as well so a cat likely has the same systems. if you search for "Lessons from Lobsters | Jordan Peterson" from a channel called "WordToTheWise" you will get a 5min clip of a clinical psychologist and collage professor (two of the same guy's titles in case that's not clear) speaking on the topic. your cat sounds like a different situation where it actually needed some medical attention.

After 3 visits for a variety of mystery ailments after he fell off a decorative retaining wall in our Japanese garden, I was getting really worried. First the limp developed, then he refused to eat and eventually it was refusing to drink. His limp started switching sides, we had to feed him jar baby food after surgery and he didn’t want dry dog food and he was drinking water from my large fountain so I would think he wasn’t drinking anything (he would dramatically flop down in front of his water bowl). The bad news, I thought my baby has a serious illness or something, but the doctor said are you missing a pair of earrings? They are also very punctual about when they get their breakfast and get mad if I’m late. They like routine.

I'm a bit skeptical of the "faking an injury for attention" explanation. Seems like anthropomorphizing animal behaviour to me. That's like saying an animal is pooping/peeing where they shouldn't or being destructive because they're "mad at you." Animals don't think this way. An animal engaging in dysfunctional behaviour is doing it because they're either sick or stressed, not because they're vindictive or "grumpy."
@jakepullman4914

@@zammmerjammer Pretty sure anger is a normal emotion for many animals, especially mammals. The ability to remember when an individual has hurt you is important, and social animals often get aggressive or show other cues to maintain the hierarchy. I think you may be actally under-anthropomorphising, thinking a behavior is exclusive to humans that really isn't. And faking an injury is simple pavlovian conditioning. They do something, get a reward, repeat for further reward, whether that's treats or grooming or something else.

All 3 dogs would lick the plate super clean then check out the other dogs plate to see if they left any. I'm really lucky that in Brazil doctors and vets are usually friendly enough to give you their phone nr. I always whatsapp my vet when I'm worried and she makes the call whether I should go there or not. She even prescribes minor things over whatsapp. I've lived in 9 countries so far (Europe/Japan/US) but here in Brazil is where I feel doctors and vet are the most attentive. My dog has a GP vet, a dentist, and an ophthalmologist (he had a few health issues). He also does echo, and full checkup ultrasound every year (like us, humans with an insurance in Brazil). I'm just a middle class person. I'm not rich. And the service is excellent. I'd be terriefied to have a pet abroad because I'm so used to what I have here... Part of my family is American, and when I used to live there I had an insurance. But I dare say my dog has better health care coverage...

Three of them are making the insurance company their money -- never been seriously ill in a decade. My 4th cat is taking the company to the cleaners -- urinary problems since she was like 2 years old, which is really rare for a female cat. Pet insurance pays for 50% of her special prescription food and every time she has an emergency (which is easily like 2k each time) they pony up like 80% of the cost. The best way to change type of food is to mix the old with the new,and make the prosess slowly. Its not just about a dog making a fuzz, but also to let the system be used to another type. It was my vetenerian that was critical to me changing the dogs food,from one type ,and when empty, a totally different one. He told me its not about the dog being spoiled, its so much more . He was right also,because my dog got so much better (the dog had sometimes a loose stomach). The vetenerian told me that dog couldnt tell us that their tummy hurt,but that was what normally happened to them, when suddenly change food. In the end they would eat it anyway,just as we human would do,when hungry enough, even when they got belly cramps. It made me so sad , i didnt think so far,i just assumed the dog was spoild...But then again,the dog food isnt THAT luxurious,soooo, maybe not that spoild after all... Now i always make sure i mix, and have two or three types to mix in ,just for a change in taste, but alwaus some of the same types,so the dog get used to the the food. Those poor animals who eat pot, I feel SO sorry for them. They have NO idea what is happening to them. It must be scary, regardless! Of their “grin”. Accidents happen, but it’s not funny. But one that IS, my daughter, who is a GROOMER, and has had 100 pets growing up, gave my other daughter a cat named Oscar. One day the recipient called me crying and hysterical. The cat was rolling around and howling. I thought the cat was poisoned, because that’s exactly what they look like when they are. Rushed him to the nearest all night vet, $$$, 20 miles away. Oscar turned out to be Oscarette, looking for a boyfriend. 🙈. I felt like SUCH an idiot. I didn’t even check, I ASSUMED my adult groomer daughter 🤦‍♀️….

After getting a vaccination my dog collapsed on the vet floor. We took him to ER where we spent about $4500 for all kinds of stuff. He ended up having such a bad reaction his entire right side of his body changed colors to dark purples and red bruising that looked like he had bleed internally. He would have died so it was worth it. Unfortunately the side affects shortened his life span and he only lived to about 9 year of age when the breed average 14-16 years of life. Sometimes your freak out over nothimg but if you really care bout your pet it is better to be safe than sorry

Not quite to the same scale as these, but my cat has a small scrape between her shoulder-blades atm. We paid £85 for antibiotic and steroid injections, but tomorrow we have to take her back for some kind of dressing because she keeps pulling the scab off and is PROUD of herself every time she does it lol. I've bought a whole bunch of medical suits for her but if they're big enough to cover it they're also big enough for her to Houdini out of them. What a dafty...proud of managing to scrape the scab off repeatedly! 😺

1:55 Dear person with the same name as me, one of my cats has also gotten really fat and can't reach to groom himself. We have this pet comb/brush that we used to substitute. The only problem ... we can't get near him because of his skittish nature to run away if we try and pick him up or just walk towards him "too quickly."

A) Please try to help your pet lose weight, obesity is a killer. B) Try putting some canned food in a slow feeding bowl (subtract from daily ration) and try using that as a distraction while you groom. If all else fails cat groomers do exist. Good luck. I've also seen grooming stations cats can roll on their back and use.
@novasapphire2865
@novasapphire2865 Жыл бұрын
@@imzadi83fanvids7 The reason he got fat was because we went away on vacation and my aunt fed the cats while we were away. The thing is, she could only come once a day so she left them food for the entire day. We were gone for a week. My other two cats must know how to space it out because they weren't nearly as fat as Grayson (the cat mentioned before) had gotten. We went back right away to giving them increments of the amount my aunt gave them until we got to their normal amount. Luckily, it must have helped because after awhile we noticed him not looking any different, so we soaked him (very difficult because of the whole skittish thing) and found out that he had lost weight, but he just had so much fur that it didn't look like he did. When I say we used that pet brush, I mean it. We got half of his fur out with that thing. Half of the fur was just sitting there, which made us realize he hadn't gone back to grooming himself. He does it now after we used the brush. We haven't used it since. He's ok now, don't worry! :)

Some of the stories about pets pretending to be sick to get attention reminded me of a story I read where a mother was worried about her seven year old son's stiff leg. She took him to seven doctors but they couldn't find anything wrong. Finally the seventh doctor asked the kid why he walked stiff legged and he said that he was pretending to be like Chester from Gunsmoke. I didn't find that at all funny. That brat knew how worried his mother was about his damn leg and yet he wouldn't tell her he was playing at being like a character on TV? I don't know what punishment his parents gave him (I bet they didn't find it funny either) but if a trip to the wood shed didn't happen, I'm sure no tv for several months would've been in order. 🤨

Got to the hospital, they did all these expensive tests and x-rays etc. The doctor looked at my brother and told him everything looks fine, my brother said okay and sat up. My dad blew a gasket🤬.

Word has gotten around the pigeon community, that mine is a garden where they can rest safely if they are in trouble. About a month ago, Pretty Bird arrived, with a bloodied, dislocated left wing. I cleaned the break. It was a hopeless injury and I did not know what to do. So took her to the vet. The vet gave me antibiotic drops and charged me 37 Euros. Said the wing could not be fixed. Pretty Bird has learned to fly using only her shoulder muscles. She visits a few times per week. Money well spent IMO.

Some vets will purposely make you go through all kids of tests when they know the cause probably isn't something serious. But I'll share my own story. When I was a kid/teen, my family had three cats. Around the same time we got the youngest one, the oldest stopped meowing. She would open her mouth to meow but nothing would come out. We took her to the vet and WITHOUT making us go through expensive tests, they told us that that's just how she was reacting to the new kitten. I guess they can temporarily lose their "voice" when they are stressed out.
