A song celebrating the British tradition of flamboyant males who dress to impress. The video was inspired by Japanese TV commercials.
This track is included in SMASH - The Singles 1985 - 2020. The complete collection of Pet Shop Boys singles in chronological order. “SMASH" will be released on Parlophone on June 16th in a variety of formats including 3CD box set, 6LP vinyl box set and digitally, as well as two special limited edition formats available exclusively via the Pet Shop Boys store - 6LP white vinyl box set and 3-cassette box set. A 3CD/2Blu-ray edition will also be released which includes the complete video collection of the singles plus extras.

Actually, this video is mainly affected by a very popular Japanese TV program "Kinchan no Kasou Taishou" that starts in end of 20th Century, not commercials. In that program, amateur groups perform skits by faking various situations. Their ideas are judged by pannel. It looks the middle-aged man in the video who was tired in the daily life is trying to win the program with the idea of performing billiard. Including me, many of Japanese had dreamed once to be performed in this stage, especially when we were children.

Thank you for the comment. Your English is pretty good, except PANEL has only one N. I heard an interview with the Pet Shop Boys, and the real inspiration for this song are young British men in their 20s, who dress up flamboyantly and strut around London. Putting Japanese television over the song was just a last-minute decision and has almost nothing to do with the song itself.

Pet Shop boys made my youth and coming out in Austin TX in 1986 so much fun. Everyone hit the dancefloor when Opportunities came on. Opportunities is still my favorite.

This is song is more general though and about locked in societies like a lot of Japanese business men have to experience. They used to hide losing their jobs from the family and dress up in a suit, as usual, and then sit in a park/bar and then go home again to see the family and have a simple dinner cooked by the wife. Many of the men ended up taking their lives. To me Japan is the most techno focused country and in this song I believe Neil is singing about detachment. Sorry, I studied politics and I think it is great that this song has helped you to make your life better. All the best from me. 😎🐘

Opportunities and 2 ÷ by 0 Are my all time favorites, since I was 11, 12 years old😊, I didn't get hooked on suburbia or west en girls at the time , but when opportunities came up, and the video , I ran to the record store the next with my parents and bought the LP, and the first song was so 🤩😍😍🤩😱😱😱 Let's not go home We'll catch the next train I've gotta enough money To pay on the way.... And the reason maybe because it was the first ever record I've bought in my life , I remember having bought the next 3 ones after that , Left to my own devises, was and still one of my favorites head to head with being boring , this song almost makes me cry all the time when he says YOU'LL BE SITTING SOMEWHERE HERE WITH ME

Wow, I have never seen that video. I moved to Japan in 1998, before this track was released. I had no idea it was based upon a long defunct Japanese TV show. Excellent 👍 a true surprise this morning to see this video. Chris and Neil, bring Dreamland to Japan! It's been 4 years since I saw you guys in Osaka.

PSB大好きなんですがこの曲初めて聞きました！ PVも相まって一瞬にして引き込まれてしまいました。ミレニアム前後の日本が色濃く出ていて、当時を思い出します。あの当時は不況だデフレだとテレビや世間の声を聞いて育ったためそういうものなんだと思い込んでおり、どこかでデフレがストップして豊かな国にまた戻れると思っていました。今考えれば十分贅沢で、先進性もバブル時代の遺産も、昭和の良い匂いも残っている最強の時代だったなとPVに出てくる人々や町並みを見て改めて思い直しました。当時20代前後で思い入れの強い年代だからそう思うのかもしれません。今後もことあるごとに見返したいPVですね！

Very nice to have this video back in KZfaq! Not so nice to see how this supposed "HD Upgrades" have manipulated the original quality, because the result is not better that the original DVD versions...even worst some times...

The synth alone, makes this one of their absolute best and of course it RULES !! Gotta love it, that the japanese loved it enough to make it a part of a game show, which further PROVES how awesome this tune ACTUALLY is :):) The Michael meyer kompact remix, is actauly so sood, it's quite BEAUTIFUL !! IMHO, it is VERY beautiful :):)

I just can’t get my head around the fact that this is almost 20 years old…released in 2004. It still looks so amazingly modern & smart. Just incredible. I‘ve always wanted PSB to dive into more Japanese stuff, and here we are. Brilliant!
