I use the Tamron 28-75 2.8 for weddings and love it. It´s only 100g heavier and about 400 € cheaper and for me it has the more versatile range. Still I think it´s great that Sony tries to offer affordable 2.8 zooms, not like Canon who make you spend 2500 € for the cheapest 2.8 zoom.

Personally, I love my RF 24-70 f2.8. It’s got more quality from it than I even need. But it was expensive, and it’s large and heavy compared to third party competitors on E-mount. And, of course, this 24-50.

What the hell are you talking about, dude? As far as I can see, this is the very first and only affordable first party Sony zoom. Their G/GM lens prices are on par with other manufacturers.

I like Tamron, but starting at 28mm is a dealbreaker for me. Sony should have made it 24-50/2. Yes it would have been as heavy as 24-70/2.8, but it would have eliminated in many cases the need to have primes with you. I can't live with f/2.8 shooting at a restaurant at night, I have to carry at least one prime.

@@hardywoodaway9912 I am speaking as a Sony shooter. I did purchase 2 sigma lenses a while back and both had less that satisfactory auto focus, so a pain in the ass with video (i do both stills and video). so I am no longer tempted to use a 3rd party lens when a first party lens exists. In fact I find that when I do look at Sigma or Tamron, I have to reacquaint myself with what their abbreviations mean. I am not in the market for this lens, but my son who has an a6000 is moving up to full frame and this will likely be his first lens (he does mostly landscape). I am not arguing with you, just pointing out that now the Sony has lots of lenses. sony shooters may not want to waste time on the 3rd party market.

For me the most attractive feature is the compact size and still covering 24, 35, and 50mm focal length, which could replace the prime f2.5 lenses if the image quality was good enough. This could be a good alternative for street photographers that strives for compact and large enough aperture.

Whenever you touch a Tamron, you can feel how cheap it was. Maybe if you’re a professional, you just care about results, you want to min-max cost/profit, but I, as a hobbyist, want to also feel good about using my gear. Just like with cars performance isn’t everything; you don’t want hard, scratchy plastics or cheap cloth on the seats, you want soft-touch materials, nicely damped switches, soft leather… Oh and besides feeling cheap, you don’t get a function button, aperture ring, breathing comp.
@selishots
@selishots 6 ай бұрын
@@houserhythm I'm a professional and not once have I used the function button on any of my lenses that she's them. Would a AF/MF switch be nice, yes. Does it take less then 2 seconds to switch MF/AF using buttons on my camera also yes. Sure some Sony glass feels nice in the hand but honestly as long as it gets the job done, produces a great image, and doesn't feel uncomfortable to hold I don't really care if it feels like plastic.

More options is always good but I do think it's going to struggle a tad given it has three direct competitors (size and weight wise). Most similar - Tamron 20-40 2.8 More versatile - 20-70 f4 or Sigma 28-70 2.8 (excluding tamron's 28-75 as its considerably bigger) Not for me but more options won't hurt.

Most of us are looking to minimize the number of lenses we need to buy, so I think its a "dont bother with a kit zoom and a bunch of budget primes lens" , fast enough to soften backgrounds and better in low light than kit zooms, this AND a 150- 600 telle , OR a super wide or a macro and as a hobbyist depending on your interests thats going to cover a lot of situations.

I think this is aimed to displace those three little G primes they came out with a few years back. I believe the fastest of those was f/2.5. This lens covers the range of all three at a similar aperture and not much more price or size. I think you’re right on with its use as a street/travel lens.
@USGrant21st
@USGrant21st 6 ай бұрын
It has nothing in common with small G primes, other than focal range. People buy those primes for the reason they want small and light and this zoom is not. Moreover, people would choose one, not three of those primes, the one that fit their needs most.

I’m hoping to get a 2.8 which crosses the 70mm barrier as photographing events 70mm can be too distant for performers at the back of the stage, so use the 70-200mm but that is not wide enough when their at the front of the stage. Not bad. I'm all in for compact, light lenses that don't break the bank. But in this case, I would prefer the wider focal range of the 20-70 f4. It's about the same weight, size and price, and if you can step back, it would give you almost the same shallowness of depth of field at 70mm at f4 as you would get with this lens at 50mm at f2.8. That all being said, I know there would be situations where the need of an extra stop would trump everything else.

I’d argue the 20-70 f4 is a much better choice for that. It’s practically the same weight and f/2.8 is mostly pointless if you’re hiking anyway. Events, f2.8 is probably better but at that point you’d probably be better off with the Tamron…

I feel like one use for this lens is for someone who would be bringing the 24-70/2.8, but also some sort of a telephoto. This is cheaper and lighter than the 24-70, and if you also have a 70-200, you probably don’t need to fully cover the focal length gap. If you don’t need the 2.8, sure, the 20-70/4 makes sense, but if you do, I could easily see this having benefits over a 24-70 or 28-75. That said, the lens would probably be more special as a 22-45.

I recently bought a used Sony 24-105mm F4 like new. I personally feel it is more practical for All-In-One lens for travel. I am more in photography than videograohy. Aperture F4 is good enough for me. Ultimately, it really depends on your core preference.

Jordan, what’s happening to Chris’s knees during the sitting shot during the video performance section? It only happens there but was curiosity it was a focusing thing of that lens for the Panasonic or just a rendering thing?

A lot to compromise on here. I think I would prefer a 20-70 F4 and deal with a stop less of light.

Would you recommend this lens (Sony 24-50mm) or the Sigma 28-70mm/Tamron28-75mm lens for an all-in-one, compact lens? I know the Sony is a tiny bit smaller and shorter than the others and you get the extra Sony in-body features (focus breathing compensation, etc.), but you also lose 20ish extra mm of reach and it is a few hundred dollars more. Just wanting an extra opinion!

It is a good option to pull people into full frame. It’s cheaper than Sony 16-55mm F2.8. You cut off the wide a bit. Yet you can then move to full frame in the near future and still have glass.

Seems like the audio isn't synched right, but that could be a KZfaq issue.

I would love to see the following comparison. Two photographers shooting a wedding. One with standard equipment and another skilled photographer using an iPhone. I’d like to see the results compared from the same wedding. And I’d like to ensure the iPhone photographer knew how to use the iPhone properly and was as skilled in composition as the photographer using the digital camera.

great decision by sony, as a compact lens, with very high quality, and the 70-200/2.8 is still a must have. Excellent also as a travel zoom.

My choice is still the 20-70, same size, WAY more range, even better macro capabilities. Definitely more important to get the shot, instead of getting it at f/2.8

I usually prefer 60fps but for you two particularly it always drives me nuts 😄

Event reportage. And a Sigma 65f2 or SEL8518 on the second body. Perfectly fine.

KZfaq isn't helping the 1080 compression on this one. Bumped it to 4k and what gorgeous production.

I like the look of 60fps substantially more than 24/30fps. 24fps to me looks like a series of stills when panning.

I'm waiting for a 10mm to 300mm f/1.2 lens that has everything you need including weather proofing and stabilization, etc., with perfect performance for all occasions. Manufacturers have the ability, they just need to build them. 😊

I have the 20-70F4, and 24G, 40G, 50G lenses. This is an interesting lens for sure. If I didn't have the 20-70 I would strongly consider it. But it's easy to go down the fast aperture rabbit hole, with why stop at f2.8 get faster primes. And will say I do find I use the 20mm focal length a lot on the 20-70 f4. So yes, tempting but I think I will sit this one out.
