What Nikon does with their Z series is truly spectacular. The cameras are really good, but the lenses make it amazing. Not only these f1.2 ‘beasts’ but esp. also the f1.8 counterparts. We’re an association of a few fashion/beauty photographers sharing two studios in Switzerland and we’re all using different systems. I’m using Leica SL2 and some Lux and APO lenses, but truth to be told, in mirrorless these Z-mount lenses of my colleague are the only ones close to or on par with my APOs…

Love the fact they are doing something different as you can simply adapt any pedestrian 135 from canon or sony thanks to the Zmount flange distance and diameter. That rear element is indeed massive! I'm disappointed you didn't shoot more point light sources to see the minimized mechanical bokeh amount. Now all that's left is the 35 f1.2 and their 2023 roadmap is done.

As a decade long canon user I bought R6 MKII as my first step into the mirrorless. More and more I'm second guessing my decision because of RF lenses. If I don't want to use the adapter and move to RF mount, their lineup really gives you the cheap zooms (with few 1.8 primes) or the omfg why this lens costs like used toyota. This Nikon lens is of course super expensive but overall nikon's mirrorless lens lineup seems a lot more resonable for enthusiast and at this point I think all bodies no matter the brand perform on par.

I was in your boat last year. Used to shoot Canon DSLRs until ~2015. Then got a Fuji for compactness but eventually missed full frame. Chose Nikon because their lens lineup seemed reasonable (and not like Canon/Sony where you get a cheap craptastic or a sell your kidneys and use a wheelbarrow because it's so big amazing lens). Very happy with my decision after this year :)

If you going to move over ,start with the Z8 which to me ranks among the best mirroless camera ever made. The next consideration should be the ZF for budget option then the incoming Z6iii. The earlier version of budget friendly Z cameras will be a step down to what you have already .

Same thoughts here. At least the EF lenses can be adapted to Nikon too with full AF for pictures and video, at least as a solution for a while. For me the best overall systems in the price / quality ratio now are the Nikon Z and the Panasonic L-Mount. I'm waiting for the Panasonic next releases with phase AF, the S1 line. The lenses are great and cheaper, and now Samyang join the L-Mount and maybe others will join in the near future. I'm still with Nikon, but waiting for what Panasonic will bring in the future.

Out of curiosity, I just checked an e-shop with photo equipment. They offer 11 135mm lenses for Canon (EF and RF) and 8 for Nikon (F and Z). The third party lenses which exist for both also have the same price for both (no surprise) and the only 135mm lens by Nikon (which is also the only one for Z mount) is actually ~12% more expensive than its Canon RF equivalent. I'm not happy about the lack of mid-price RF lenses either but not everything that "people say" is actually true.

Some of the nicest rendering I have ever seen. I used to own the Sony 135mm f1.8 GM. It was super sharp but I didn't like the rendering at all. Flat and clinical. It seems totally different here. As a side comment, it's time to let go of the non sensical idea that linear motors result in faster focusing lenses than stepper motors. It depends on the actual type of motors and on the construction of the lens.

I have always thought the Sigma 135 had a nicer look to the images than the Sony 135GM. and now I think the newest Samyang 135 might be the best out there for Sony. the main thing the Sony is best at is focusing speed, and sharpness only by a hair. but not with the overall look of the images it creates. same with the Sony 24/70 GMll according to some people who own it. this new Nikon has a nice look to it. but between the heavier lens and heavier camera. its not for me. and there's also the price.

The question I have in my mind is why you would choose this over the Sigma Art 135mm for Nikon F-mount, adapted. They're both: Very sharp... stepper-motor, not a quicker linear motor... very low vignetting... Big... heavy... same 82mm filter thread... the only difference/advantage I've noticed is that there's maybe a little less cats-eye bokeh in the corners at maximum aperture. And the Nikon is maybe a bit lighter - but still not 'light'. If it were lighter still, or if the autofocus were linear and lightning-fast and flawless like the Sony GM 135, I'd see it more. But it's a slightly marginal argument for this considering the price of this new Nikon... which will be?... a lot more than either a new, or (readily available) used Sigma Art 135, I'm thinking. Happy to be corrected

I must admit to loving 135mm. When it was released the Zeiss 135mm f/2 APS Sonnar was my dream lens. Wonderfully built, optically superb and a real pain to focus, it is still a lens I love and try to use, more often on my GFX100s than my D850 but it is still special. The second "135" is of course, not a 135mm but the Fujifilm 90mm f/2, which again is a lens I love, because it is everything the Zeiss isn't 'small, light, focuses easily. Of course, optically it is great and whilst it can't compete on the depth of field, that is not something I really miss that much. I would love to see a 135mm shoot out, just for the entertainment value and bitching in the comments. 😋🤣

Was a bit surprised that with a minimum focus distance of just 0.4m, the magnification ratio is so low. But in fact, Nikon site lists minimum focus distance at 0.82m and magnification ratio as 0.2. Sony and Samyang do a little better with the focusing distances of 0.7 and 0.69 m and magnification ratios of 0.25 and 0.24, respectively.

@@livejames9374 More even sharpness the 135gm is the only one that passed a 100lm/mm it is one of the only primes under long tele that ever achieved that performance. So I doubt that very much, the Canon suffer from more textured and onion ring bokeh and can have CA around the edge. The better transition well I must say I question that one as well, certainly not something I seen proof off. Cynical/flat is a consequence of more even sharpness/contrast and low level of aberration issues and flaws that is generally the consequence of that. Even this Nikon look a bit “flat”

An amazing lens for sure ! Will perhaps be the best 135mm lens in many regards - I suppose Bokeh and Sharpness reach a fantastic balance here, and all with much less cats-eyes and probably amazing qualities for Astro as well. Only thing keeping me from buying : not even do I have a Nikon Z body ( 😆 ) which will be changed in the near future, and of course - the price ! Too much for just this very specific focal length for me !

Good for you. I suggest holding off on that change unless you have a lot of money to spare. Switching to Nikon Z from Sony out of brand-nostalgia is a decision I regret every time I go out to do some photography. Disappointing lack of variety (e.g. there are still no full-frame AF f1.4 lenses for Nikon Z without adapters), and outrageous prices as Nikon will not allow value-for-money third-party alternatives.

This is my favorite focal length and would be a compelling lens to get me to move to Nikon. The minimum focus distance is also impressive for a lens of this length considering that my Canon EF 135 f/2 has a minimum focusing distance of more than twice this at .9 meters. With as sharp as this lens appeared in this video, I honestly had to wonder if Zeiss is not making this lens under contract for Nikon!

An interesting😀 lens for portraits and weddings. A great addition to the Z line but accordingly seems to have a subject niche. Since I am not a video guy I cannot render any opinion on the video qualities of the lens. I have used the Nikon 105 F2.8 through the D series, film cameras and the Z bodies. I would have to hold one of the new 135s before I could make a decision on the lens. All-in-all it looks like a Nikon winner. The name Plena is a stroke of marketing genius. Great job.
