News doesn't take a break, so this week, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake join Jaron Schneider from the comfort of their hotel room on the coast of Vancouver Island. The biggest story? Canon's RF mount is finally open to third-party developers, but there is a catch. That said, there might be a good reason for Canon to make this choice, as its sales aren't doing great.
The trio also discusses Sigma and Nikon and Canon's response to the situation at RED Cinema. Finally, it can be hard for solo creators to work with larger teams when they're given the opportunity, so the three present their tips for making the most of those types of opportunities.
We use Riverside to record The PetaPixel Podcast in our online recording studio: creators.riverside.fm/Petapixel
We hope you enjoy the podcast and we look forward to hearing what you think. If you like what you hear, please support us by subscribing, liking, commenting, and reviewing! Micro Four Thirds (mFT) cameras are often underestimated in their ability to capture incredibly detailed photos, but they truly excel in this area. If you're considering this format, I highly recommend giving it a try. The convenience of carrying a lightweight 400g setup is unbeatable, especially compared to lugging around a 1.5kg camera. It’s a change that has completely transformed my photography experience, and I'm never going back. mFT cameras consistently produce fantastic images, proving that great things indeed come in smaller packages.

I think the term DSLR sticks because no regular person knows what it means and there is no need to translate it. It’s like the „brand“ of a generic professional camera. Mirrorless sounds more technical and descriptive. Personally i wished DSLM sticked instead of „mirrorless“ but whatever. And i also think that even in 10 years people will call it DSLR

I just switched to Canon R6 recently and despite I love that camera Canon's RF lens line up is disappointing. They put out cheap f7.1 lenses and then L lenses for over 2500€. They are missing the sweet spot around 1000€. I really hoped they would open up the RF mount to Sigma this year, but it looks like they will not do that. Fortunately we have an enormous amount of EF lenses that work perfectly fine with the new mirroless, but Canon has to do more to convince me to invest in the RF system. Even the RF prime lenses do not convince me for their build quality, the lack of weather sealing is a deal breaker for me. For example last time Canon launched a 50mm f1.4 it was 1993, what about a new RF version with weather sealing that costs around 1000€? I would buy it.

As regards to storing old images - storage is pretty cheap, especially if you don't need it to be really fast. As another commenter has mentioned previously, you do need to be careful of things such as bit rot. I am actually embarking on the mammoth task of scanning all my old film going back to the early '70's. A lot of this is Kodachrome film so I have invested in an old Nikon Coolscan LS9000. I had the thing running 24 hrs a day for about 3 weeks doing the small amount of 120 film I have and some black and white. It works really well. I have printed some b&w (Ilford XP1) from 1985 @ 12" x 18" and it looks brilliant. I need to get back into it. Also, Jordan mentioned Firewire - this scanner is Firewire 400 so I have a few adapters to run it from Thunderbolt 4 on my Mac Studio.

Just a note from a data hoarder to other data hoarders HDD's just sitting there unplugged can still fail as the oil in the bearings can dry out also 1TB disks if you are going that route aren't recommended at this point as you can get more storage for the same price or cheaper at higher capacities. As for actual archiving while it's a more esoteric and actual professional solution than box of disks in a closet there are still modern tape systems being made along with archival optical disks but the issue with both of those is the drives are getting less and less common.

When it comes to the Z mount, I think it is really odd how the system actually attracts people. I've seen people switch to Nikon Z for their telephoto lenses and fast cameras bodies like the Z8, I've seen people switch to Nikon because they were basically selling a Sony A1 with a 2500 discout, I've seen people switch to Nikon for their impressive video and photo specs... I've never seen anybody switch to Nikon for the "normal" lenses, while people enter the RF or E mount system for the lens availability in those normal ranges all the time. Me personally, I shoot with a Z6, and I moved away from Fujifilm... but I'm not at all interested in the Z mount lenses. I bought the 28mm and 40mm plastic lenses (which are great) but I have absolutely no intention in getting any other Z lens for the moment. My main draw was the ability to adapt Nikon F mount glass because I also shoot older Nikon DSLRs (like the D700) and that way I can share my lenses without loosing any AF performance, thing that wasn't possible with my Fujifilm cameras (I could adapt them with the fringer NF-FX adapter, but I'd loose a lot of AF speed). What lured me int eh Z mount ecosystem is the fact that I can have a mirrorless F mount camera with good video, IBIS and an EVF at a low-ish price. The Z mount ecosystem by itelf isn't appealing to me at all and it seems strange that Nikon didn't release any 1.4 primes or didn't allow full frame 3rd party lenses to get released (they allowed some Tamron zooms but that's it). Very odd coming from a company that was desperatly trying to get market share a few months ago if you ask me.
@robert_may
@robert_may 28 күн бұрын
Agreed, I’m also not hugely into a lot of the Z glass. The primes tend to be good but the zooms are underwhelming and the overall design and feel of the lenses isn’t great when compared to a lot of the Sigma glass. Some really weird decisions too like having to squeeze lens hoods to remove them, which just feels naff.

If the term "DSLR" being used for any interchangeable lens camera bothers you does the term "Film" being used for any kind of shooting/recording even though actual film isn't involved also bother you? It could be that now "DSLR" is just the generic term for those kinds of cameras in the same way that "film" is used for any kind of shooting and we just have to live with it. What is a good shorthand way to refer to a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses vs a mirrorless camera with a fixed lens?

Jaron, regarding putting things on old hard drives and throwing them in boxes, I commend to your attention the problem that caused at Linus Tech Tips, when they discovered that their older footage and photos had largely succumbed to bit rot and become unreadable. You need an error-correcting file system, like ZFS zpools or whatever similar technology Linux now supports, to ensure that the bit rot can be reversed.

Thanks for all the great work. With Popular Photography and Modern Photography long gone, I rely on Petapixel podcasts to keep me up-to-date. In the ‘60s, I carried three Nikkormat bodies with a wide prime, a mid zoom, and a long zoom. Now in my eighth decade, I go for light weight. My event rig is a Lumix gx85 with the 7-14mm and an OM-5 with the 14-150mm. I’m contemplating replacing the gx85 with a second OM-5 body. I love the compact-and-light 7-14mm Panasonic zoom and want to keep it. It’s my understanding that the gx85 electronically corrects for the distortions in the 7-14mm lens. Will the OM-5 body also make these corrections, or am I better off sticking with the gx85? Thanks for your consideration.

Sony didn’t actually say at the beginning ‘Hi, anybody who’d like to can go off and start making E mount lenses’. A company had to apply, be approved, sign an NDA so they wouldn’t leak out to anybody Sony didn’t approve, and pay a one-off fee for the engineering specs. (But there were no license fees thereafter.) But as it’s turned out, there appear to have been no restrictions applied by Sony as to what type or genre of lens they could make. Once they’d got Sony’s agreement it seems to have been ‘Right, off you go, produce whatever you like.’ Though some at Sony might now be grinding their teeth a bit over one or two Tamrons or Sigmas. Sony’s situation was a bit different then, though: they needed a quick expansion of E mount lenses they hadn’t the time to develop and manufacture, which is a bit different to Nikon’s current position, less so for Canon. While Sigma’s CEO says E mount lenses are their bread and butter now, it’s unknowable if that’s seriously eaten into Sony’s range. They’re busily bringing out new ones and updating others, so maybe not.

Sony is pushing the boundaries in the camera's themselves. The global sensor is huge. I can see most pro sports shooters going full Sony. The fact that they will limit burst rates on secondary glass will not effect casual buyers but will with pros.

Wikipedia define a reflex camera as "a camera that permits the photographer to view the image that will be seen through the lens, and therefore to see exactly what will be captured." Therefore a mirrorless camera is a reflex camera as well as one with a mirror. So the DSLR include mirrorless as well as with mirror camera. We could also call mirorless camera DSLM for Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera!

I’m really hankering for Sigma lenses on Z mount. The 24-70mm f/2.8 and 500mm f/5.6 in particular. Nikon Z glass has some standouts but overall I don’t really love the designs of a lot of the modern Nikon lenses (like the lack of a real focus ring on half of them), and vastly prefer the Sigma options. I have far fewer lenses for my Z9 than my S5IIX just because I don’t love them as much, which is frustrating as the Z9 is a great camera.

Concerning reduction of storage space, I shoot a Sony A7RIV, which produces unnecessarily large RAW files. I convert them to DNG (using Adobe DNG Converter) and edit them ruthlessly. DNG Converter doesn't just save "a little space" (even when only converting to DNG, and not to lossy compressed DNG). For instance, a small batch of 18 RAW files taking up 2.06GB converts to DNG files taking up 1.04GB, approximately halving the required storage space. Knocking our duplicates and near-duplicates, missed focus images, and other unacceptable images obviously reduces storage requirements as well. If you're on the fence about an image, output the RAW image to a PNG or 100% JPG before deleting the original RAW file. You will at least have something to work on later should you decide later to use the image. (I use DxO PureRAW in my workflow, and output to both PureRAW's DNG format and to JPG, so I have JPGs of any images of those RAW files I might trash - and can then trash any of those JPGs that were generated from dupes or bad images. I do my post processing on the PureRAW DNGs, and then trash the PureRAW DNG after creating a working file in Affinity Photo, as the processing file is smaller. I can always regenerate the PureRAW file - which is also excessively large - from the DNG derived directly from the original ARW RAW file.)

Jaron your method of sticking a HDD into a closet does not really work. Data rot is a real thing, the magnetic information just randomly changes. To protect against this, computers actively need to scan against this with fancy algorithms. It would be fun to get Wendell from level 1 tech on the podcast to discuss storage for photographers.

I thought Single-Lens-Reflex refers to the fact that a single lens is used both for image formation on the sensor and for camera users view-finding. The exact technique of how you accomplish it is secondary. One may use a mirror and a prism system to form an OVF -or- reconstruct the image formed on a sensor onto an electronic screen to form an EVF. The goal I thought was to reduce the flange distance to make cameras and lenses compact and to unify sensor and AF mechanism to further make the cameras compact. In which case, mirrorless ILCE are technically Mirrorless DSLRs.

I love my sigma FP L. Its my everyday shooter (my Fujifilm x 100vi if you will). It has some amazing features that you won't find in any other compact camera, such as built in ND filters (ISO 6), great long exposure live preview, Raw Cinema DNG Video, Crop modes, etc etc and it really stands out as an L mount high MP option. Under rated camera in my opinion! That being said there are many many compromises made with this camera and you have to be ok with those before owning one. I would never recommend this camera as someone's primary camera and would honestly steer them away from it if they don't already own L mount glass. My S5IIX is my main shooter so it works for me. Also buy the FP or FP L used you'll save at least a 1000 dollars if not more. I bought mine in open box condition with an EVF-11 for 1700. That's an absolute steal!

After getting into Canon EF-M and then seeing it discontinued, I'm not especially motivated to consider them again. Letting Sigma APS-C in is cool, but restricting 3rd parties at all from producing glass ultimately hurts users of the system. Nikon is better but seems to be doing some of the same. I'm on Nikon Z, but the Z30 was a pretty big disappointment for my video work. It overheats after 35 minutes of 4k even only doing hdmi output with no internal recording. So when I'm financially able I'd probably move to something else unless Nikon can do extended video work a lot better in the next iteration.

One thing to note on the Insta360 topic. Those Chinese companies, like Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi, DJI and Insta360, would usually issue a "review guidline" along with a sponsored product to Chinese influencers. That way they can make sure the influencer could appear to be impartial during a review while avoiding any negative press. I guess they are trying to bring this culture to the rest of the world now.

In the PC world, Nvidia and some others have gotten in a lot of hot water attempting that 'culture' with some respected large channels (Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed ...)

"SLR" has been around for decades. "DSLR" was just one extra letter. "ILC" makes my brain hurt. OTOH there's an important difference between (D)SLRs and mirrorless. I'm open to change, I guess.

The funny part is, how the heck is Canon getting Sigma 18-50mm before Z mount when Z mount has been "open"? Nikon isn't supporting their APSC enough as well anyway, let Sigma at least bring the 18-50, 10-18 and 23mm f1.4 😢

I think the systems should be named DSRL and DMRL. I'm tired of saying Mirroless.

Ironic how they say they don't have problems with DJI mics and there's a lot of interference and low volume cutting in the very same recording.

Guys I sell cameras as part of my job, if I mention mirrorless, customers look at me like confused cows. Even those who already own cameras are generally the same. Unfortunately dslr is the only camera term people in general are familiar with (aside from film and digital) and don’t even get me started about bridge cameras, customers look like they think I’ve escaped from a mental asylum when I mention them

Funny how Canon still thinks they are the Apple of the camera world just because they once were at the top. I fondly remember my 600D, but would never buy their R mount cameras considering the random overheating issues in photo mode and exorbitantly expensive glass compared to the competition.

We usually just call them cars, regardless if they are 4-cylinder, 6 cylinder, V8, hybrid, or EV. I'm just saying.

So where's Nikon full frame sigma alternatives for the z mount? where's the bemoaning that people send towards canon? I know Nikon opened up to apsc earlier than canon but still cmon, lets all be fair.

I remember when m43 was going to be called an "Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens" camera. Abbreviation: EVIL camera. Didn't catch on.

Canon is running the same game plan as they did with the EOS M system: do as little as possible. There is no heart or commitment to this APS-C system. Do. Not. Buy.

Canon needs to do something different. I think their strategy was to release these dim telephotos knowing people will buy again when they release proper lenses. I myself and looking at jumping ship. Sony has the lenses and tech, but they’re moving to the flippy screens and I don’t like those. Nikon looks like they’re moving to fujifilm 3 way tilt thing, but they’ve got some serious holes in the enthusiast telephoto range.

so you depend on us to make MILC happen? Imho it should be the reporters pushing for a new name. I am not sure why not just stay on ILC from the get go or maybe as a shot from the off use ICLC aka InterChangeableLensCamera. Maybe LM-camera (Lens Mount), lets go crazy and find a new name which normal people understand and can use. Imho it's past the point where somebody should have pushed a new name...

Hopelessly solitary human, and a very solitary creator. I mean look at my stuff. It has to be that way. But in my day job I do have to adapt and lead and delegate to experts as well as the hapless. You just have to have the ability to truthfully tell yourself that the people you have to work with are paid to do a thing and can mostly be trusted with their little part of producing a vision. Can't do it all alone if you have a team, otherwise why have the team...

If Canon wants to make pro consumer choices, then I just might buy a Canon body. Getting real tired of Sony's garbage practices as of late. You'd think they would treat people who buy thousands in camera gear a little better, but nawh! 😂
