@@ebakindeji5941 Er, the fact that he exudes not just a chauvinist mentality that he, as a man, has a paternalistic duty to protect Cathy, as a woman, but this medieval attitude where he considers Cathy to be particularly precious property of him and his family, and himself to be a more of a victim of Wilmott-Brown's actions than Cathy herself, since, as far as Pete's concerned, Wilmott-Brown damaged his family's property, and humiliated him by exposing his failures in his manly duties to protect that property. He even explicitly tells Cathy that this isn't first and foremost about her and her suffering. (Er, yes, it is - she's the one living with the trauma of having been raped, who had her bodily autonomy violated in one of the most egregious ways possible, remembering that she isn't yours or anyone else's property, but a human being who should be afforded sovereignty over her own body. Nothing you're experiencing compares to what she's going through).

There's never been a prevalent societal view that men are women's property, certainly not in Western society, nor in the vast majority of societies of the last few millenia. My point is that what upsets Pete is not what his wife's going through, but his failure to fulfill his manly duties (as he sees them) to protect his wife.
