Just terrible broadcasting by the commentator when Pete had his trouble in the 5th. How could you cover this event and not figure out the anguish was due to Gullikson?

This was the match that really got me into tennis. I remember watching this live in Australia on Channel 7 and going to bed at 2 in the morning absolutely in amazement of what I had witnessed. I was a Pistol Pete fan for life from that moment on.

Wow, that match was mental! The first time I have watched it all the way since the early 2000s. I am amazed at Courier. He went two sets up fighting hard, but as soon as Sampras started his comeback, even though Courier doesn't say much, the close ups showed the panic that was running through his body. Clearly Sampras picked that panick up from the other side. Then Courier had a collapse at the end of the 4th set. And despite Sampras suffering in the fifth, his persistence caused Courier again to succumb late on. What panicked Courier is the way Sampras raises his level almost at will when he wants, which Courier can't match. When they are both at their best, Sampras is better, which Courier understands, even if it leaves him extremely frustrated. The other thing that cracks me up is the fact that Courier spent almost 4 hours hitting to Sampras' backhand and still lost :-0 In fact, throughout their rivalry, Courier talks about hitting to Sampras' backhand but the rivalry ended 16-4 to Sampras. So that tactic was almost a waste of time and considerable effort. A pity those vital games where Sampras broke back in the 4th set are missing.

I remember Courier reading a book during Hanover ATP Masters in 1992 vs Goran ivanisevic. Lol every break he would sit down and read a book. That was so bizzare. However those days players didn't have "team" like now. 10 people doing God knows what. The you just had 1coach of you were lucky. Many travelled without one as it was very expensive. Simpler nicer world.

Never really watched again since '95. Can't remember what set Pete off and getting so emotional? Later it was revealed Tim Gullikson had collapsed & crashed thru a glass cocktail table. What a choke job by Courier who finds ways to drop matches when in command. He reminds me of Jenson Brooksby who plays these days with the same kind of passion & trying to take the cover off the ball. 😆

Pete’s coach was diagnosed with terminal cancer is why he was crying and courier offered to complete the match the next day.

The tear was for Tim Gullikson. Maybe Sampras and his team knew he would die. Tim Gullikson died about one year after this match. RIP. Sampras started dominating the Grad Slam tournaments from this point.

@@yankeeromeoalpha True, but since part of the match is missing, the video is still incorrectly titled as "full match". It is not a full match and should not be labelled as such.

@@yankeeromeoalphaIt's still ridiculous to say "Full Match" in the title, knowing that people read the title much more than the description. Not only that, you have to click on it before you can read the description. So that means they are ready for their click. The definition of clickbait. It's a great historical match. People woulda watched even with part of the first set missing. So the deception was unnecessary.

He wore it in 1991 during the French Open and he won a match in which he was down 2 sets to 1 and ended up winning the whole thing after he wore the hat. So he never stopped wearing it ever since. He won 4 grand slams and was year end #1 as well. He wore as a superstition

@BurnsTennis

Unless you are blind, serve speed is not low. Serve speed was recorded off the racquet different back then, was updated in the year 2000. The ball moves fast, even your eyes can tell you that.

Not at all, not for the time..or even today, when plenty of guys "only" serve ~180 kmh, like Sampras here. Pete was plenty capable of serving 200+ kmh, and did so in this match; to do it all the time, with the tech and smaller racquet heads of the time, would have been exceedingly risky.
@BurnsTennis
@BurnsTennis 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattrange5439 I agree but in reality the 200 kph serves (126mph) were timed a few feet off the raquet in 1995. That was adjusted in 2000 for serves to be timed straight off the bat. As you saw in the early 2000s, Sampras' serve was regularly timed over 130mph (212 kph). In the 1994 Wimby final v Goran, some serves were 130mph, that is seriously quick. Plus Sampras puts a lot of spin on his fast serves so they actually will feel like mini bombs on his opponents' racquets. As far as I am aware his fastest ever serve was 138mph, recorded in 1998 Wimbledon. The fastest I saw him hit was 136mph (220kph) against Federer in 2001 Wimbledon.
