There’s less than 1 week to the NEC, this is the “DON’T PANIC!” episode.
In this video:
• Pete talks how the mice ate his trees (poor excuse).
• Hardly any wiring is complete yet.
• More and more detail is added to the scenery.
• The housing estate nears completion.
• Dave shows us his new measuring stick.
• Andy solders up and tests the new signals. Only 23 to go!
• Chris wires up CAN shields and Arduinos for the departure boards.
• We’re giving away scale ticket machines to the first 50 who ask.
• We have a track plan to show you.
• For the Guinness world record attempt Chris explains how we will measure the track.
• More at the tea room. Pete explains the future, Dave doesn’t like it!

Speaking of mice eating trees...... I spent over $100.00 importing "sea foam trees" from the US. Spent days on painting and flocking them , only to have all of them eaten by mice in a week ! Not happy Jan! Great work as usual guys! Gregg .

Thanks Dave for all these excellent shots of the layout and conveying the story. I've just started creating my own (shorter) slice of WCML so this is brilliant reference material and hugely entertaining. Living in SE Asia I have little chance of seeing the layout at the exhibitions any time soon but wish you and all those working on the layout the best of luck! P.S. Surely Peco and the likes have the technology now to start producing rail in brown with a clean top for conductivity. Would save us hours as you must hand paint it if you want realistic track, just spraying it with sleeper grime is the easy way out.

Pete and EVERYONE ELSE, I know you are TOO busy getting the last details done to read this note BUT I KNOW you will get things finished ON TIME, BUT if for some reason ( mice ) you don't >> just REMEMBER this NO ONE and I DO mean NO ONE will blame you for not meeting the schedule BUT YOU ALL TRIED YOUR BEST ( and WHAT A BEST ) and that is all that CAN/SHOULD SAY !!!!!!! BEST WISHES ( as you NEED IT ) !!!!!!!!!!!

Really annoyed I'm going to miss it on Saturday. Been watching all the videos. They've decided to close the West Coast line somewhere south of Stoke which means a 6am get up time from Manchester. I'm keen but not that keen ;-) The irony of closing the railway is off the scale!

Looking forward to seeing this next weekend ... 😮 but if there's sections of scenery incomplete, most people won't worry (and those that moan don't matter). It's a tremendous effort whatever. Good luck guys. ps Ironically WCML is closed north of Oxenholme next weekend !! So I'm having to drive to see a model of the WCML 🤣

Fascinating videos seen by me following a chance meeting with Chris at a footbridge over the WCML at Acton Bridge. It all takes me back to my youth when my father was easily involved with the Manchester Model raileway society and I helped out at their exhibitions at The Corn Exchange and UMIST. This really takes it all to another level. The sophistication and level of electronic control is amazing compared to my memories form the sixties and seventies. Well played guys, you are a great team. I Also think you have makers plate off a Hymek that I sold in the late nineties which I bought at Steamtown as a school boy in 1974. Not telling you what I paid for it!

Each track could have a schedule for trains stopping and passing.. then we could plan in moves and see the points being put into use in the process

Piko do a "Smart Measure" wagon. Costs another kidney but might be a bit more accurate. Hope it helps.

Wouldn't it be great to have a scale integrated transport exchange. Have a bus arrive at station, 2 mins later a train pulls in. etc Instead of the constant motion !!

Will the tick creator wagon register the inside, outside or middle of the track when going round a bend?

I have a complete MegaPoints system for sale CHEAP, it is for the servo point throws of up to 24 points, hardly used as i gave up the hobby before the layout was anywhere near complete also a complete DigiTrax DCC system also going cheap

All it is, is four lengths of track. They are right it is boring. All Pete wants is to get a record. He claims it is for the kids, while all the time Hornby are pricing them out of the market. To be honest, I hope it doesn't work, now that would be interesting.

Just four lengths of track? Four complete circuits plus siding and fiddle yards, fully wired and controlled with motorised points and signals. Detailed scenery and arguably the best catenary modelling to date. Don't forget the Making of the baseboards and everything else. Suggest you watch all the videos again.

I wouldn't model WCML modern image, but I'm pleased someone else does. It's a kind of trainset loop on a monumental scale, and I'm sure the kids will love it.

Sorry to disappoint. Not only did the layout work, but Making Tracks became Making History as it took the Guinness record for Largest Portable Model Railway after hours of scrutiny.
