It was -14 up here in Spokane wa during this cold snap. We have two 75w red bulbs in our coop. Water still froze over but not completely just had to break top layer off couple times a day and refill in AM

We put our kitties in our heated storage building for those three nights and one day. In the morning after they ate, I would put them outside thinking they wanted to run around but Ginger wanted to come back inside. 🙂

I feel your pain. Here in North Texas, it was 8° two mornings. I had to move all my plants into the house for 3 days before moving them back out to the greenhouse. My swimming pool had 1 inch of ice. Last time we had ice on our pool was in 2021, the big freeze, and the ice was 6 inches thick then. Another cold night coming lows in the teens, but I think my heat lamps will protect my plant ok.

Christmas lites in under the tarps will provide some heat. And straw around the bottoms. Also I have a fan that is charged by the heat coming up from the heaters to circulate the warm air in my 200 sqft greenhouse, all I had for heat was two camping propane lanterns, it saved my stuff.

Thanks for your comment on the other video. Really glad to hear your prickly pears survived! If you are looking to expand your fruiting cacti, may I suggest a few other varieties? I'm having decent luck with Opuntia robusta, O. orbiculata, and O. engelmannii. They seem to handle the cold snaps well enough. We got down to 14 degrees during that awful freeze. I covered the O. robusta with a comforter and it was fine.

I'll have a video up Sunday on the cube. I love the cube because it hasn't given me any problems and just works. With my Harvest right on the other hand I've have vacuum leak problems, lost all the refrigerant and that took HR a month to fix and now I have vacuum pump problems. My oilless pump just died and my premier oil pump fogs up the entire room. Cheaper is not better.

I also live in East Texas- out east of Lufkin (if that helps) in the piney woods and we got down to 14 degrees Wednesday and 15 on Tuesday morning. Monday night was when most of the windy snow flurries came in and it got down to 21 degrees. I spent most of Sunday insulating water lines. Most of my plants did okay and I put some plants in overwintering in my greenhouse. They didn’t fare very well but they’re mostly alive lol. Also my pepper plants that were cut back to nubs seem to have done well also. My Swiss chard suffered as did the lettuce but my spinach didn’t even notice the cold. I hadn’t even covered them and they were out in the open! You never know what’ll survive. Surprisingly my carrots and celery took a bit of a hit and are quite wilted but they’re still alive as well. My Brussels sprouts, cabbages and broccoli did great. My onions and garlic didn’t even notice the cold either (in fact it seems like they liked it lol). I’m starting seeds this weekend on heat mats in the greenhouse for spring. Tomatoes and peppers and eggplant! Should be fun! P.S. So glad your plants did so well! Preparation does really help! 👍🏻

I am about 40-ish miles east of San Antonio and I have learned that you can NEVER trust the weather forecaster … especially in the winter time. I cover and/or protect everything as necessary if the forecast is below 40 degrees. It is my personal opinion that the weather forecasters can’t even predict yesterday right. 😢 So sorry about your plants.

Pete, would a interior fan in the greenhouse help keep the hot air from those LP heaters from concentrating at the top of the arch, and help the heat stay on the plant level? The same front came through here (Georgia Zone 8A). We went down to 12.7 degrees at our house and we have another 14 degree and 17 degree morning predicted in the next few days. We went ahead and harvested what we had in the yard (no greenhouse for us). Weather is one of those things. If you don't plant, the weather will be warm all winter, if you do, the arctic blasts get you. Oh well....
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 7 ай бұрын
Yep a fan would help circulate the air, maybe I'll do that if we gets any colder than what we've had. That's true about the weather and washing your car too. 🙂

We prepped for the blast by putting a bale of grass hay in the coop, mostly was worried about the 7 week-old chicks more than the grown hens. A vet friend said they don’t need continuous access to water throughout the day, so I brought out water to them in the morning, thawed it out again around noon by pouring warm water over it, and maybe one more time around 4. Put a deep mulch of leaves on the herb bed, there was some die-back but for the most part they’re looking good. Watered the fruit trees, put a thick mulch on and hoping for the best. Didn’t think the black plastic bag approach would work for several days of sub-freezing temps?
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 7 ай бұрын
That's good, all that hay in the coop will act as insulation especially if they lay on it.

When I was in NJ the old timers would use a tomato cage filled with leaves and wrapped in a blanket for their fig trees and they survived the cold winters and would leaf out inside. Might help your cacti

Do you think frost blankets would work better than the plastic pads for your cacti? Or maybe a combo of frost blanket with tarp over them?
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 7 ай бұрын
I thought about blankets and tarp but I would have to make sure that I only use those blankets for the cactus because they would be full of thorns. 😮
