They are fighting to keep their jobs, the monopoly doesn't change lol from who do you think the convenience store are going to buy their liquor from? I tell you it would be from the LCBO. Ontario goverment are not going to lose a dime but they will be able to close down stores that way they don't need to spend money on staff and store, just like the weed industry here in ontario, we still going to pay high prices for liquor comparing to any other country we pay about 12 to 15 usd or euros more for a 750ml bottle.

@@Atite_Lometen Wait a second, you just prove to me this strike is to keep the monopoly! If they will buy from LCBO and will still be under government control there is no logical point on this strike that makes sense from the union claiming the reason as opening the market for other locations to sell!

They're fighting to stop living wage jobs from being replaced by minimum wage jobs where profits go to multi-nationals and grocery conglomerates. The strike started the minute they wanted spirits-based coolers in convenience stores and grocery stores because it's the biggest growth category among alcoholic beverages. You can also see the correspondences on the LCBOs negotiations website and the union website, they provided no guarantees of RTDs or spirits from going into private. I'm all for choice, but people can get choice without destroying living wage jobs by reforming the LCBOs product submission process and to appeal to the government around liquor taxes. Because private won't address either issue and will likely see price increases like in Alberta where a 6pk of import beer is way more expensive than at LCBO.
@whiskyboi312
@whiskyboi312 14 күн бұрын
The monopoly exists regardless of the stores existing. Province controls distribution, minimum prices and taxes on alcohol. All this "choice" does is move spirits-based products to big private business who aren't living wage employers (no disrespect to bottle shops who do actually allow choice for things the LCBO doesn't sell who wouldn't be affected by these changes) and destroy living wage jobs and the lives of working class Canadians. Thankfully most support the labour action and aren't morons who spit out BS online who have no idea about alcohol sales and policy in Ontario.

Quebec doesn't sell RTDs. The union has said nothing about beer or wine sales in convenience stores. The minute the word "spirits" came out of the governments mouth was when the gloves came off. @hadesunderworld4203 exactly, they don't sell spirits based products in Quebec convenience stores. OPSEU never said "no" to allowing malt based coolers, the disagreement is over coolers containing vodka, whisky, tequila, etc. which are the biggest growth category among the 19-36 age demographic and a huge volume seller for a lot of stores in urban areas. What a weak reasoning. They arent going to lose much of the monopoly. The lie that it's about hours and wage is also weak because the only people I hear that from, aren't good workers. Let's be honest, it's cool to strike and protest right now. The strikers i passed were arrogant monsters. They seemed drunk, they were lowering their flags and blocking people walking by, hitting them with pool noodles and a guy with a whistle that wouldnt stop blowing it for 9 hours straight. Corner stores aren't going to have as large of a selection. And most of their sales are going to be people near the stores with DUIs who dont want to walk as far. Or 24/7 locations that are open past the LCBO hours. Use your BRAINS folks.

I have no problem supporting the union’s wish to have a monopoly on spirit sales because there are plenty of LCBO stores around and the prices are controlled. But the LCBO must have open hours that reflect the store hours of their agency stores and other private retailers. That means open at 9AM and close at 10PM at the very least. If the LCBO and union can’t agree to this, then allowing private retailers the sale of spirits will be inevitable.

Im confused, isnt it run by the province? Who is "signing the pay cheques"? If its not run by the province, and it doesnt stop this kind of thing from happening, what is the point of handing over all competition to this socialist monopoly model then??? Also, how badly are they getting underpaid?? Whats the going rate for a grocery store cashier these days?? Is booze about to get more expensive over this? How can they not afford to handle their work force properly...THERE IS NO COMPETITION, and bussiness is always booming! They all want 60K for stocking shelves and scanning bottles, or what?

It's job security, not necessarily pay. 70% casual workforce means there is NO security for the position. For arguments sake let's say a retail worker makes $30/hr. What is $30/hrs x 0 hours in a pay period? 0$. (To even make much more than minimum wage you have to be there 5-10+ years and work ancertain number of hoirs to even qualify. (And only after 5 years + 1500 hours worked can you qualify for ANY benefits.) The warehouse is also picketing, not just retail locations. Just because all you can SEE are the retail workers, doesn't mean they're the only ones that are being effected by this.

OPSEU and LCBO want Doug Ford to expand, but include LCBO/opseu in expanding distribution. If LCBO makes 2.5 b per year in profit for the public, imagine what expanding those profits by being the sole supplier to all these new stores with licenses could do in revenue and profit for the public on top of what is being done for the public now. The 2.5b$$. If Doug Ford says NO to expanding LCBO, the LCBO loses that profit yearly and so will the public, plus all the new profits he makes without expanding lcbo no longer go to the public cause the big box stores and convince stores you'd buy from would be owned by his friends privately. So profits all go into their pockets instead.

It's simple...upper management for the LCBO and the worker's union will get jobs elsewhere or a beauty golden parachute. In the mean time the LCBO will be shuttered and tax revenue from the sales of alcohol will go from being an income source for the Ontario government to being a profit source for large corporations. It really is just a transfer of control. If it was really about the consumer than alcohol sales would have been offered through all retailers not just the big chains years ago. Just follow the money. To the LCBO workers, you have been duped.
@Atite_Lometen
@Atite_Lometen 14 күн бұрын
Liquor sales still have to go by the LCBO so tax revenue won't be shift it to large corps, tax revenues will increase actually cause the Ontario government will be able to close stores and fire staff which are cost that are loses, making the same sells and profit on taxes without mirco managing the stores like the OCS.

You forget that the lcbo will give you fair pricing. whatever fees, taxes, operation costs will now go to the consumer, so that companies can keep their bigger profits. As the consumer we'll lose and as a society we'll lose a good employer that helped these people go to the middle class

I know people don't like change or having to be forced to lift a finger but there are other jobs out there. Plenty of businesses having trouble finding good workers. It surprises me that people are worried about jobs after years of media coverage of help wanted signs and hearing from local employers how hard it is to find people that want to work. *LCBO Warehouse Worker here* 👋 I want to clarify some things Peter lied about, or was intentionally misleading about during this interview. I’d also like to remind everyone this is Doug Ford’s cabinet member and Conservative finance minister of Ontario (he is responsible for Ontario’s tax and benefit policies and his decisions have a direct impact on your cost of living in this province). His salary is a little over $160,000/year. Ok, first of all, we did not choose to “walk away early,” as Mr. Bethlenfalvy states in this interview. During negotiations there is an arbitrator present, this person acts as a neutral middle-party. Once the arbitrator realized the LCBO was not going to meet or even NEGOTIATE on our demands of job security they basically called it a stale-mate at which point we were forced to make the decision to strike. Our only other option was to accept a deal that we believe would accelerate the privatization of the LCBO and demolish one of the ONLY good jobs we have left in our communities to fight for. Second to the above is the claim they offered us “basically” everything we asked for. Think about that statement for a moment. Ask yourself “Does it make sense they would decline an offer that contains everything they asked for? Why would they reach a stalemate if they received an offer like that?” The answer is simple, they didn’t give us an offer like Peter is claiming they did. They offered us a pay increase that doesn’t even meet inflation, the same thing that your company is probably doing to you. We are all struggling to make ends meet, except for Peter Bethlenfavy and Doug Ford & friends. So, to be clear, we did not receive a reasonable offer which we chose to selfishly decline in hopes to achieve an even more lucrative deal. We are standing up to the government because we are the people of Ontario and we ALL deserve to live a good life. Without the revenue generated by LCBO we all foot the $2.5 billion dollar bill together in our increased taxes. Without this we all suffer. Lastly, I want to address the idea that we should “move Ontario to the 21st century and treat Ontarians like adults.” Our union is not against the expansion of product availability, this is something we consider an exciting topic of debate in our negotiations because it breaks new ground and we believe it could create good jobs. What we are against, however, is paying workers low wages with no benefits or pension in order to create more wealth for the top of the food chain. We have suggested to the government that we put an OPSEU member LCBO employee at each retail location for beverage alcohol. To us, that means a number of new members, some of which could be YOU. We want them to pay you a livable wage like I mentioned before, we want them to enrol you in a benefits package and offer you a pension. The government does not want to consider this option because it’s more expensive and complicated for them, despite it meeting both our agendas. When they say treat Ontarians like adults, to me, that means “increase their taxes,” and “be deceptive on television to maintain our holier-than-thou position publicly.” In conclusion, when I got hired for this job they made me put my hand on the bible and swear an oath to the queen of England - “I solemnly swear…blah, blah, blah, Amen." Once sworn in under oath, under normal circumstances I could be persecuted for treason by sharing anything about the employer or slandering the government (i wish I was joking. Most people don’t know this is even a thing). This might be my only chance to speak my mind uninhibited. So, what have we learned? For one, we didn’t walk away early and let me be clear, WE ARE READY AND WILLING TO SIT DOWN & NEGOTIATE MEANINGFULLY. We would return to the table immediately if we believed the LCBO was willing to negotiate our tabled demands with the intent of resolution instead of the intent to deny. Second, we learned that Peter Bethlenfavy was intentionally misleading the public during this interview and the LCBO absolutely did NOT table an offer that was even remotely close to what we had proposed. Lastly, we learned that OPSEU is not fighting against coolers in convenience stores. We are happy to expand but we will not allow the Doug Ford government to cost Ontarians more than they have already. We are your neighbours, we are your friends, we used to be your classmates and some of us still are. This isn’t OPSEU Vs liquor in convenience stores. This is The People of Ontario vs The Ford Government of Ontario.
