Brötzmann is literally screaming through his saxophone on his first solo with such an intensity that it makes me choke. A great musician.

This kind of music breaks all the rules, and it definitely is challenging. But that doesn't make it illegitimate. Funny, if I'm in the right mood, I can listen to this all night. Also check out Ornette's amazing soundtrack to Naked Lunch for more sonic mayhem. Harder than speedcore, and it's a bunch of jazzers. Thanks for the comment.

Not necessarily. If one really concerns the predecessor of this kind of genre in jazz music, which is usually titled as "European free jazz", and try to find a prototype of it in American free jazz scene in the 1960s, then the prototype has to be something about music of Coleman and Cherry (listen to "New York Eye & Ear Control" if you're interested), not Coltrane. Indeed, there're numerous followers of Coltrane, but they aren't.

It seems louder than even Ayler at times, perhaps because every member is committed 2 making as loud and raucous n abrasive sound as possible, always come back 2 this ,: 0

I don't believe brotzmann when he has said at times he wasn't influenced by Ayler, Ayler is the key n there is sanders n maybe Coltrane, Sidney bechet apparently n he may have seen coltrane in 61 with dolphy just like evan parker, but he developed his own sound by 67/68 and to hear this in person would be great, I just get such a joy out of the blowing of the sax to pieces or clarinet, he just picks up a baritone or alto and blows it apart, makes no difference, and it sounds great! So simple yet ingenious, Ayler is interesting in his own way for making streams of sound and all kinds of sound out of playing scales and chords very very fast and building altissimo range, Dolphy was playing pretty fast and playing reams of sound in his last year, but 2 just get sax n blow the world out of it, to see this live would be awesome, brotzmann r u coming to melbourne again?! I know he only been like one time!!! Come back!!!! He is living great, no he has been on 2 something always, is the kind of music you hear and think no I'd do this now and not play my normal instrument or music, like great blues or rock or pop too ,: 0

Key difference is brotzmann didn't align his playing with the same kind of spirituality ayler did, to hear albums called nipples, fuck de boere, alarm, it's an absolute thrill of raw sound and attitude, nipples could be one of my favourite albums of all for this reason alone, absolute raw intense classic music ,: 0
@Jiv_Ing57819
@Jiv_Ing57819 3 жыл бұрын
Got 2 get machine gun though, alarm too, there are some specialist labels that reissue it, and if there were any globe unity or other brotzmann videos from this time it would be very appreciated even though I am grateful for what is there and hope to buy more brotzmann on cd, n what do have, is like only nipples and also more nipples? I can't find it, it isn't reissued and is expensive but of course have heard heaps on youtube n on repeat and youtube is where I first heard and saw brotzmann and it was unlike anything, blowing raw guttural sound out in a band in the midst of a quiet bar with bar bench and waiter n everything, it was like, you know it's different you know something about it, his 100% commitment for as long as he can muster is a different approach and is something I try to learn from and apply to my playing in some ways. ,: 0

Very true. As a musician, I find it quite fascinating. I think we can all agree that it's certainly "Out There" and will seem endlessly bizarre to those who don't usually listen to "Out There" type music, and even slightly bizarre to those who do.

I know this is an 11 year old comment, but to anyone interested, jazz was initially banned by the Polish communist regime until 1956. After that they had a vibrant jazz scene throughout the three more decades of communist rule. I actually think that they were _the_ country in the Eastern Bloc that was heavy on jazz.

It's supposed to be busy. Check out Solomon's Daughter by Franklin Kiermeyer for some slower free jazz. Open your mind to the possibility that you don't know everything, even though a lot of you seem to think you do. This is like a spice you take out every once in a while. It's not something you would listen to every day, unless, that's the kind of music you make. It's synaptic Habanero sauce.

It’s defenitely music. But its also very strange and busy music. I have doubts if this is intended to be beautiful, but there is now law that tells it should be. I have no clue what they are doing, but I still can hear that they know what they are doing. Its not totally unrelated. Its not my favorite, but its interesting to hear what is their idea about music.

Three lines that came to mind when I watched this entire vid, you can only pick one of them: 1. This is what happens when a mustache plays a saxophone 2. In the year 2202 this will be heard blasting out through loud speakers on a daily basis in the area we know today as Moscow 3. This is what you would hear for the rest of your life if you went through a carwash (without your car) and the soap they used was actually pure LSD.

I've played and studied music for 13-14 years now and not once have I encountered any real "rules". The closest I've gotten is things common to certain genres (like that the melodic minor scale descending in most classical music resolves into a regular minor scale) but those are not rules, just descriptions.

Aftastos K - What are the 'rules' of music? Did Moses bring them down from the mountain on 78s? The very existence of a rule makes an art form dead. Suggestions, yes - perhaps things that people have become acculturated to - but as I always say to individuals who claim someone cannot sing: 'They produced vocal noises, so they clearly CAN sing. You just may not like how they do it, but you don't get a vote, except with your dollars/consumer habits, as do others.'

Whether or not you enjoy music like this is completely subjective but to outright deny this as a form of musical expression it comes off pretty elitist.
