Really superb post and no doubt great to see Peter in another light. I never wanted it to end. I so miss him and Dudley. They was a superb combination.

This is really wonderful to see. I have never seen footage of Peter Cooke being himself. Thank you so much for this.

great interview … Peter cook was a unique talent. it's startling to see reasoned discussion over politics and more so to hear someone say "I don't know enough about it."

He's so gentile here. It's hard to imagine it's the same guy who did a routine about the dead pope giving him the horn.

This is absolutely phenomenal, Andrew Peel: thanks so much for posting! Where on Earth did you find this, who is the interviewer, what were the circumstances? In 30 years as a Peter Cook (and particularly Bedazzled) fan, I've never heard him talking, seriously, as himself, at length, about anything, let alone the politics of his day - absolutely fascinating. I have a feeling that even his biographer hadn't seen these interviews. Do tell!

irvingmoses The interviewer is Canadian presenter Bernard Braden. The interview from 1967 was as part of Now and Then, an intended documentary series that never got the greenlight. The footage has come from Braden's own archive.

Amazing! I presume you had private access to these archives. They really show a very rarely seen side of Cook, and the snapshot of the political scene at that moment of history, and how it was perceived, is priceless...

@@Moriarty0001 I've come very late to this but what a find. And how very sensible Peter Cook turns out to be on so many subjects. And I love it that he couldn't help liking piss-heads like George Brown and Reginald Maudling. Many thanks for this.

Peter describing the scene from Withnail and I to get around the drunk driving laws. Bless him. I would liked to have asked "Peter, you have just 27 years remaining. How can you use those years to the best?"

His accent became less and less posh as he got older! Weird.

Booze. It's interesting to see how wrong Cook was about the future of Rhodesia. He was right about Israel. We're still waiting Arabs, get in touch.

How reflective of the brain-dead inanity of the GP worldwide that this rare interview with the greatest comedic personality of all time should attract such limited interest here. Must be the posh voice that deflects an audience reared on greed and envy.
