I worry that now that Rickman's gone, we'll have no more lovely old English actors who can play terrific villains. Hopefully Dalton will stick around for a while longer an get some good roles, and I can see Cumberbatch possibly aging into it.

Amazing, isn't it? It wasn't until after I fell in love with Star Wars in 1977 that I started to realize that Peter was THE man for all those Hammer films and other horror classics I had grown up with, watching on late night with me mum! @@Ellis01234567890 @Arthur SS I think he's referring to the letter his wife left him when she died. Peter's wife died in 1971 and he said it took him 13 years to recover, considered suicide as he felt he had no meaning to his life. He decided to throw himself into his work and accepted everything as a way to cope. The letter she wrote said "do not pine for me, my beloved Peter because that will cause unrest. Do not be hasty to leave this world, because you will not go until you have lived the life you have been given. And remember we will meet again when the time is right, that is my promise." To mention the part about not taking his life she must have known he'd struggle. This is a great interview with him where chats about it - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7B0aNehtsqVYmQ.html

Yeah, except that "Hitler's mustache" was fashionable at the time and was not seen as grotesque, and goose stepping marches were absolutely not invented by the Nazis, but by the Prussians in the 18th century, and were even used by 19th century Britain. Plus, there are tons of examples of "brutal dictators" who have a very unoriginal appearance, like Lenin, Mao, Franco, Salazar and so on. So that theroy doesn't hold up.
@jlvfr
@jlvfr 7 жыл бұрын
Hitler's moustache was the result of having to use a gas mask in WWI. He had a regular, full size moustace... that didn't fit into the mask. So he had to cut it off. If you want "ridicolous" from Hitler, think of his "flip hand" salute. He was the only one that could get away with it!

I had my aunt round a few weeks ago, and after talking with her about Peter Cushing coming back as CGI in Rogue One, she told me of the few times that she met Mr Cushing when he delivered his clothes to be cleaned where she used to work at a valet around Whitstable. One time, he apparently left a shirt, or trousers (I forget which) there, so she got his address and drove over to his house to deliver them back to him. He had answered the door with a rather pensive look on his face, so she thought she'd just hand them to him and go. His face lit up when he saw the item, as he was about to go out to a dinner party, and couldn't find the one that he'd left at the valet, which was why he was so deep in thought. Apparently he was so polite, "Oh you shouldn't have gone to the trouble of driving here" ETC ETC. Just enforces my view of him as a great man.

Imo it's kind of disgusting they used his image in a CGI character after he's long dead. Would he have approved it? I don't think at the time he died they could predict the tech we have now and I'm not sure he would have agreed with it. He probably would have done what Robin William's did in his will to prevent studios from pulling that bullshit. Also fuck franchises I'm so sick of seeing endless sequels made by soulless corporate stooges for quick cash. Need more movies like The Lighthouse that was fucking incredible cinema. Rogue One was one of the better Disney Wars but it's still unnecessary and forgettable. Everything since Empire has been diminishing results. He seems like he was such a sweet, kind man. I would absolutely love to know what he would have thought about his own "resurrection" for Rogue One considering he was known to say he would have loved to be in a sequel. Unlike Alec Guinness, who seemed to hate Star Wars and his entire experience on it, Cushing seemed to relish the experience.
@darth856
@darth856 7 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong, I have little doubt that Cushing was a nicer person than Guiness. But we have to remember that Guiness became defined by the role in Star Wars in a a way that Cushing didn't. He continues to be remembered, probably to this day outside the circle of hardcore Star Wars fans, mainly for his horror movie work. Guiness didn't hate Star Wars itself, but he did grow to hate it because it overshadowed his other work. He didn't want to be remembered just as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
@MatsThyWit
@MatsThyWit 7 жыл бұрын
He disliked that aspect of it for sure...but he actually hated it even before that became true. He wrote letters from the set to friends which have since become public in which he expressed his dislike of the material. And it's worth noting that even his bitterness toward being "type cast" or remembered only for a specific thing shows a distinct difference between he and Cushing. Cushing never lamented that people only thought of him as a "horror actor" and he was easily just as pigeonholed for that as Guinness was for Star Wars later on in life.

Yeah...It's hard to side with the guy or defend him against criticism. He hated the first film, made no attempt to hide his hatred of it over the years, and allegedly only returned for Empire and Jedi because they backed up the brinks truck to get him back. And even then if you watch his performances in those two movies he's absolutely half-assing his way through them. I love the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Guinness's performance in the original 1977 film is very good in spite of his distaste for the project, but from everything we know about the making of those films...he was kind of a huge asshole.
@MatsThyWit
@MatsThyWit 7 жыл бұрын
+ClandestineOstrich Yeah I wouldn't doubt that at all. Guinness was there in Tunisia to see all of the production delays, special effects failures, and general mismanagement that the movie suffered through. Peter Cushing was such a class act, able to raise the quality and dignity of any film by his mere presence in it. I've a particular love for "Horror Express" (1972), in which he appeared alongside his friend Christopher Lee, because Cushing took the death of his wife so hard he was basically going to pack it all in - not just acting, but life itself - and that was the film where Lee convinced him not to give up and helped him to get back on the acting wagon and get past it. If he hadn't, there are so many great films that simply wouldn't have been the same without Cushing. Star Wars is just one of them.

Arguably the second iconic Dr. Frankenstein after Colin Clive in the first two Karloff Frankenstein features. Never heard anything but good words about Peter Cushing. +TOFKAS01 It's an old, posh British accent that would have been in vogue from the late 19th-century through the early 20th; chances are people born of that period would have learned to use it to elevate their social status much like penmanship techniques and elocution exercises found in the school system. You don't hear it so much anymore, but a number of British actors would have used it in film and theater to convey upper-class sensibilities throughout the 20th century. And since people watched those movies beyond their lifespans, the accent still lives on in art if not in everyday use. Angelina Jolie used it for MALEFICENT, and you can hear it in her "o"s, "g"s and "try"s (like "gentry").

Peter Cushing was an incredibly gentle, sensitive man. It's the sign of a great actor that he could play someone so unlike himself. In his youth, he'd been something of an artist. Perhaps the most heartbreaking thing about his life was how the death of his wife left him absolutely devastated for the rest of his days. It was a terrible sadness that never left him. Such a wonderful man. Peter Cushing was a master of his craft and took the time to work with the younger actors between takes. It is too bad that the cameras weren't rolling to capture these training sessions. He was truly a class act.
