I wasn’t aware dwarfism was an “outdated stereotype”. I always assumed it was a medical condition. Thanks to Peter Dinklage for clearing that up. 👌🏻

There's some information missing here. The "outdated stereotype" wasn't dwarfism, Peter Dinklage was referring to the roles the dwarves play. Dwarves are either cast as brusque ne'er-do-wells or as "cute". They are not cast to be "real people" but as a stereotype. Peter Dinklage wanted to bring that point up to Disney but like everyone else, Disney assumed he meant "don't cast dwarves".

@@daniguzman4539I was just coming on to say the same thing. He wasn’t happy with the roles they were given, and wanted them to add value to the story, so he wasn’t happy. NOT that he just didn’t want people with dwarfism to be in the movie. He was accurate as well, because they were weird silly people you really don’t know in the original movie, great for comic relief, and so adorable, but they could have had much cooler roles. I’m not looking forward or even having a desire to watch this movie (I still have not watched the little mermaid for the sole premise that I don’t like how Flounder and Sebastian look and act during the trailers).

His argument would hold more value if it was directed at movies who take little people to potray little people and do so in a stereotypical way.

Actually the original Snow White fairy tale is kind to dwarves. In the original story Snow White steals their food and ransacks their house, but instead of punishing her they forgive her and take her in. She then repays them by cleaning and looking after their house. The beautiful child behaves badly and the dwarves are kind and generous. In other words these little "outcasts" teach her not to be like the vain and cruel queen. It has a very dwarf-positive inner-beauty type message.

@@succrse7235 Well, that is largely irrelevant. For their role to work in the story, they have to be "Ugly". It is the whole inner-beauty moral. It is very similar to Game of Thrones where Tyrion is by far the most capable, moral, and benevolent ruler that King's Landing could want, but he is "The Imp" I honestly thought he would be made King at the end, in a sort of nod to Snow White.

Yeah I grew up with a book full of classical tales and the dwarves are litteraly acting like fathers with Snow White. They protect her, feed her and save her twice before the apple "kills" her. And in this version the prince hear the cries of the mourning dwarves and as soon as he sees Snow White's corpse he feels so sad he says he will give her a proper burial. So the dwarves moves her on the horse which makes her spit the chunk of apple stuck in her mouth and at the end they are all happily dancing while holding each others hands and the same moment the Queen has a cardiac arrest after the mirror says she is still not the most beautiful woman.

The last part he's really known for is Tyrion Lannister. That is an example of what he is talking about. He was upset that actors with dwarfism are almost never cast as people. They're almost always cast as caricatures. Magical humanoids who are either brusk and stubborn, dwarves, or silly and cute, gnomes. They only play those roles, leading to the idea that those roles are the only ones actors with dwarfism should play. But if you look at what he's been doing since- he's not taking those roles. The dwarfism isn't a part of those roles. He's playing characters with nuance, which is what he wants for others like him. It'd be like if brown actors were only ever cast as taco-stand employees, and a Cuban actress, who had just spent years playing an assassin, whose cover was that she worked at a taco stand, complained about the kind of parts people like her were getting.

Dwarf actors have obvious physical limitations and while I understand wanting to play a character with substance, they can never really play any roles that involve physical fighting or athleticism. Stereotypes basically guaranteed work for dwarf actors and literally none of them have complained about it since the dawn of film. They play the hand they were dealt and got the roles they were able to play. Screenwriters and casting agencies don't owe it to others to change the material to accommodate the role to fit anyone. The role is the role and if they fit, they fit. Now studios are afraid to get cancelled if they hire dwarves for roles they would actually be good at and now dwarf actors are missing out because of it.

Dwarfes in mythology are supernatural tiny beings often old with beards, dark hairs and pale skin that lived in mountains and mines and were great metallurgy craftsmen famous for creating magical objects and artifacts in legends..... I agreed with your comment.. I just meant that people with the genetic condition called Dwarfism are not the same as dwarves in mythology so to associate both and call it unfitting to cast real dwarves os not really a good argument. They could have a great opportunity in these kind of roles, which is now taken away from them...

Peter’s gripe was with the fact that they didn’t even cast 7 dwarves at all - they cast 6 randoms and only one dwarf and he was a stereotype. They could have cast 7 actual dwarfs and gave them complex personalities. Especially with it’s titled Snow White and the 7 DWARFS, not the 7 Random Weirdos.

I think Peter Dinklage has a point here. In the original Disney version the dwarves are portrayed as not knowing how to keep a house in order or wash themselves and it is only when Snow White shows up that they suddenly discover water and soap and it makes them better people..... In the original fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm it is completely different. Snow White comes into a clean house, everything is ready for the evening, the table is set, the food and drink is already on the table, the beds are made. When they find her, they take care of Snow White, not the other way around... they do this on their own initiative, because they are normal and good people with their hearts in the right place and good people help someone who is in need... the dwarves, They definitely don't need anyone to civilize them....and they save her life twice...actually three times because one of the dwarves stumbles at the end, but ok, that was an accident (so not a true love's kiss). I think that's what Dinklage meant. Dwarves, always only good for a laugh and otherwise incapable of taking care of themselves, is offensive....and it can promote stereotypes in children. What Disney has now done with the dwarves is even worse than before. They made them "magical creatures" as if they were not normal acting and real people, only representing people with dwarfism in one case. By the way, in many fairy tales dwarves are such magical creatures, but in this fairy tale of all places they are not, but rather simple, hard-working people with good hearts...in fact, it is one of the few fairy tales where dwarves are portrayed as real people. I would say Disney has completely screwed up again.

I would say the real stereotype portrayed here had NOTHING to do with dwarfism and everything to do with men. Back then it was a MAJOR stereotype that men were incapable of living on their own. They would live in filth because they didn’t have a woman/wife to take care of them. That was the stereotype and it wasn’t exclusive to dwarves it was for all men.

This is a fair point but really only when it comes to actual representation of little people. And yes it would be great if there were shows thst would have little people as the lead. However dwarves are mythical creatures. They arent human nor are they suppose to represent them. The only reason little people fit the role better is because of the height. There have been several snow white real life movies already and its always been regular sized people who played the dwarves and who were shrinken through computer editing. This could of been a great possibility for dwarve actors to play a major role in a big movie.

Gal Gadott is playing Snow Whites stepmother who is a witch.Yet no one is making the argument that woman are constantly potrayed as evil, jealous human beings just because the witch stepmother is. I think Peter Dinklage derided the live action remake of "Snow White," partly because he was not casted in the role of the seven dwarves. Especially in light of the Disney company's decision not to cast little people as the seven dwarves, but rather seven diversity hires. And rather than casting a German woman as Snow White, they casted a Latina as Snow White. Is this not cultural appropriation that wokeism espouses as part of racism and marginalization? But consider this dear readers, can you have Snow White and the Seven Dwarves without the dwarves?

They are not distinct personalities, they are caricatures based off a single emotion. They don’t have wants, needs, or backstory’s. They exist solely to further the plot for Snow White.

@@Babuhboobah that's one way to look at it. The other is that they are allegories, a common stilistic device in literature used to make abstract concepts, in this case emotions, relateable. Did it have to be dwarfs? No. But there's also no reason for them to not be dwarfs. Having fully fleshed out multi-layered personalities was never the aim of these characters.

yep people skip right to the outrage without considering what he was actually saying... GOT did take into account that he is a dwarf, but that was only really part of the character, the character was so much more and full of depth. most of the times, with few exceptions like Willow, they are comedy relief. it ignores the talent of the actor and only focuses on their height.

It was pretty complex for what the cartoon was. A Dwarf is a character from Folklore its not talking about people like him. They had the same complexity as the main character Snow White. In the original we learned how they lived, worked, they all had unique personalities, they basically saved Snow White, chased out the evil guys and vetted the Prince.

They just needed to make the dwarves complex characters which is easy considering they were 7 men working and running a house together. They could add so much depth and realness and personality. It’s Disney’s fault not peters he offer his criticism and it was clear from the beginning other people, others with dwarfism especially did not agree so Disney didn’t have to do shit about what he said.

@@JDB51 can you imagine seven Dinklages portraying 7 individual characters in a full featured film? The special effects budget to do this wouldn't make any sense. I've rarely seen Dinklage playing roles that's specific to his characters being a dwarf. Snow White literally has "Dwarf" in the title so I'm sure he would actually turn down this role when hiring unknowns would make more sense.

The original script disney made was “dwarfs are not people, are brutes and monsters, they are animals”, they were gonna live in a cave and snow white comes and teaches them manners and they become “normal” again and basically profit from the cave being covered in gold because the dwarfs were too stupid to realize what it was. Thats why Peter Dinklage said “i did not work for so many years and made people awareness of dwarfism, only to be made into a caricature of the same stereotype that ive always faced in the industry. If they (disney) are promoting inclusivity by casting a latin actress without making her role a stereotype, why cant they make the same for us?” And disneys response was to ignore to the awful way they wrote the dwarfs and instead change them to magical creatures(animals) like they wanted from the beginning. The reason its become “peter took roles from other dwarfs” is because a comedian who has no problem with the script (he just wants fame) wanted the role because it was a good pay. Disney decided to make the dwarfs animals instead of making the dwarfs you know be dwarfs. Like most of all of disneys live action remakes, its a cash grab hidden with “inclusivity and acceptance” but that acceptance comes at a limit

I mean that was the whole point of the story from the beginning before even the movie was ever made, even the first one. Snow "White" civilises brutes around the world. Instil manifest destiny in the minds of children from the beginning. In that case, you need to have major rework of the story. IMO, making them animals is way more sensible in that regard. I mean you dont want little girls thinking they will be safe with 7 creepy men. If you take away that they are dwarves, it is hella creepy. He literally didn't say not to cast dwarves. He was specifically referring to snow white portraying them as funny little servants who live for a woman's affection. Disney took it as an excuse to show extreme bigotry and pretty much stop hiring dwarves and canceled all shows (most notably the highly successful Willow reboot) with dwarf roles, before proceeding to blame it all on Dinklage and to a lesser extent Warwick Davis. It's Disney doing what they do best, being bigots while successfully blaming their behavior on someone of the affected group. Dinklage and Davis have both praised Willow (both original and reboot) as portraying dwarves as people leading pretty normal lives as compared to people without dwarfism. Disney then proceeded to cancel it and blame it on them calling out snow white stereotypes. It's literally just Disney blaming their Idiocracy on someone else.

The whole point of rebooting a movie is that you can change things, Disney could’ve turned the 7 dwarves into independent characters with lots of depth, but that would clearly take too much creativity that they don’t seem to have anymore

I actually met one of them. The one in the Lollipop guild who handed Dorothy her lollipop. I was 11 and it was at a fair. I was taller than him and I met his wife. They were both very kind people. Jerry Maren, he passed away at age 98 in 2018. He was the last of the Munchkins.

The dwarves were the hero’s of the original film. It wasn’t the Prince that saves Snow White from the evil Queen. It was the dwarves. Never did I ever think they were lesser people because of their height. Sure they were a little odd and isolationist, but those are personality things not height things. I think the "white" in snow white is talking about her purity, like how kind and genuine she is. Yes her complexion is also referenced in the fairy tale but the main character trait of snow white is her innocence and ability to see the good in others. I don't think Disney should be making live action remakes at all and of they want a latina lead they should actually invest in either Latino folklore/literature or create something original

Exactly right. This is all such a stupid conversation. I’ve learned some new things that I think are interesting, though. Apparently there may be historical truth to the story of Snow White. Speculation: countess Margaretha von Waldeck is Snow White. Her dad owned a copper mine with child laborers. So it’s funny, these wokies are so upset about it being dwarfs but not child laborers? Mmmmkay. Also the dwarfs didn’t have names until the Broadway version in 1912. 1915s silent film is what inspired Disney to create his ‘super offensive’ version.

No it's the fact that the dwarves are portrayed to be clueless and only become "reformed" by encountering and living with Snow White. If their characters were more fleshed out making them more individually deep and compelling besides the "friendly dwarf that needs help" then that would be different. Actors with dwarfism should have better opportunities than playing santas elves or a cheesy caricature. I honestly don't think they should make a live action remake of any of these old disney cartoons but especially not snow white.

I didn't read the whole Peter Dinklage interview on that topic. So whether it is what he said and meant or not, I think the argument against the "Seven Dwarfs" is the way they are played for comic relief in the original movie. (I don't know nearly enough of the story (or stories) that it was based on to know how dwarves were portrayed there. To be honest, the dwarves in the Hobbit movies were also fairly offensive to real dwarves as only about half of them weren't comical in appearance and mannerisms. (Not to mention that they weren't played by people with dwarfism and Jackson instead repeated his camera perspective and other effects tricks to make the actors seems smaller than they really were compared to other actors.

"If your going yo have 7 dwarves can you at least give them a bit more complex character. Most characters played by dwarves are almost clownish. Actually you’re wrong…Peter Dinklage just didn’t want Dwarves to be portrayed as magical mythical creatures who live in the woods and caves and such. Disney took that advice and said ok you want better portrayals of little people got it….let’s get rid of all of them. So blaming Peter Dinklage is wrong. It has nothing to do with him. He had nothing to do with the insane direction they decided to take the film as to not offend little people. All he wanted was the 7 dwarves to be portrayed as capable smart people who exist in society not just these magical mystical creatures hiding out in this secret area in the wilderness. The people to blame for this movie are mainly Disney for allowing this to happen and the producers and directors. They are the decision makers…so they are responsible for making these god awful choices every step of the way. AT THIS POINT THERE IS NO WAY IT ISNT INTENTIONAL TO GET PEOPLE LIKE FEM-SHAPIRO AND OTHERS AS WELL AS PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE ARGUING, MAKING HEADLINES, AND CONTROVERSY BECAUSE THAT KEEPS THEIR MOVIES ON PEOPLE’S MINDS (aka free advertising). It doesn’t bother them if people either are constantly talking about it and don’t watch it or hate watch it they are still getting their money because people will be curious, see it anyway, hate watch it, or watch it out of support for the movie to counteract the outrage. Have them be human beings and functioning members of society not in hiding keeping their existence hidden from humans. Disney took that and said ok then we will only have one little person and the rest will be people of all different cultural backgrounds and identities to make it inclusive. They could have done something really cool with this remake but they’ve made terrible decisions every step of the way. From Gal Gadot who I love as Wonder Woman and enjoyed her in that Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne The Rock Johnson Netflix movie…BUT CAN NOT SEE HER AS THE EVIL QUEEN. Then making Snow White a brown skin Latina woman though she has a lighter complexion than some Latina women she is still not super pale white which is a plot detail of the original story. Then allowing the actress who plays Snow White to completely destroy the movie before it even started by not shutting her down the moment she started saying some of the things she started saying about hating the original movie and story or saying thank god this is completely changing it because the original is awful. That just pushes people away from wanting to see it regardless of any political bs.

I would love to read that whole article. I really wish that they would post the actual article. I feel like Peter has actually open quite a few doors for people with disabilities. Keep in mind that he played in the Game of Thrones show as a consistently reoccurring role. A costar even. I understand his point that he’s coming in as a serious actor. He doesn’t want to book roles just because he is a small person. And often times, just to be clear, roles that are for small people are typically comedic roles and are not serious acting roles.

I personally believe that what he was doing may not have been intentionally to take away roles from little people but to be able to give roles to little people that don't always have to involve a dwarf or a munchkin or an Oompa Loompa and an elf and maybe the way he came across sounded more like he was just saying not to give people with dwarfism the roles and that he wants to play because he did not specify that he wanted people with dwarfism to be seen as more serious people in more serious roles like he was able to get and it is very true that it's very rare for someone with dwarfism to be taken seriously in the film industry and in general because of how people View individuals with conditions involving dwarfism

Peter has been very open about how people depict dwarves in movies since forever, and he has said in the past that he has avidly tried to avoid roles that make his dwarfism the butt of a joke or a novelty. Dont really believe him on that personally, because he was in Elf and many other movies where his height was the butt of the joke. But him condemning the Seven Dwarves characters isn't news to me, and I dont think it has anything to do with him not wanting other little people to get big roles in movies. He just has a thing about dwarf-specific roles that may portray little people as a stereotypical dwarf, as they often do in fairy tales.

Peter Dinklage did not have an issue with casting actors with dwarfism to play the role of the dwarves. He took issue with Disney's intention to dehumanize the dwarves and use them for comic relief, thus perpetuating the long-standing sub-human stereotype of dwarves in media.
