Peter Duggan is one of the last of the 'old school' lightermen on the River Thames. Born in Wapping,London in 1939 , 80 year old Peter is the owner of General Marine tugs and barges on the River Thames and still works regularly as captain of his tugs.
This short film documents the life of Peter Duggan, in this episode (1 of 3) Peter talks about his earlier life from growing up in the 1940s and working afloat throughout the 1960s and 70s.

This bloke looks really well for his age given that he's worked hard all his life. I'm from Tilbury, my Dad was a docker, seen these tugs and companies and heard these stories all my life. Good stuff that it's all being recorded, working class lives historically are massively over-looked, great that this is being addressed these days.

That took me back to my very early boyhood listening to my dad telling similar stories. Peter is referring to the 1950's when my dad ( a 'freeman of the Thames) was on the WR CUNIS & SWIFTSTONE. Although a toddler, I can still remember a Ricketts on the WRC. I had the pleasure of meeting Alec Ricketts when he was skipper of the SAURIA at Felixtowe in the late 70's. More reminisces please Peter.
