Peter Frampton's dad was a high school art teacher and one of his students was David Jones (who later changed his name to David Bowie, professionally). Peter, David, and a few friends stored their guitars in the art room and practiced when they had time between classes, at lunch, etc. Peter toured as a guitarist on David's Glass Spider tour in the '80s...he didn't want to headline, just wanted to play guitar.

Bowie had a history of lending a helping hand to others like he did in the 80's with his old school pal Frampton. Peter had been out of the limelight for several years due to severe injuries from a car accident & some subsequent drug issues that resulted. Bowie helped Frampton get his "mojo" back by asking him to play guitar for him on his "Glass Spider Tour." There are quite a few stories like this from people who Bowie influenced. The mega-talented Frampton is still performing to this day, even though he has recently been diagnosed with a debilitating nerve condition. Much love to him & his family. (BTW, was lucky enough to see them both on Bowie's "Glass Spider Tour")

I’m glad you got to see Frampton play. But, you were just robbed of experiencing this song the right way. This song was recorded as a Live performance on Frampton Comes Alive around 75 or 76. It’s the greatest live party album of all-time. This song on the live album, the audience lost their minds. This studio audience was on sedatives. Please listen to Frampton Comes Alive. The entire album. I was a senior in high school when this came out and man oh man did we ever party with this song playing. It’s practically the anthem for kids who grew up in the mid 70’s. I’ve seen Peter Frampton live 3 times over the years and it’s like a time machine hearing his music.

it's called a Talk Box. When frampton took off...and he TOOK OFF...after the release of his live album, he became one of the biggest artists on the planet for a few years. Due to a record company trying to cash in big on him, his looks etc, he became a teen idol *(again...he had been one in england in his teens), what got overlooked was that first and foremost, he was a FANTASTIC guitar player (and i'm sure many people never really knew....to them this pretty boy just appeared out of nowhere). But you can check it out for yourself. i can;t remember if you have reacted to any Frampton era Humble Pie. great great stuff.

Sorry, I forgot you already did Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh, that has the squawk box. If you dive into more Live at Daryl’s house, his stuff is really good. Funk 49 is one he’s added some to, and so he called it Funk 49-50. I’m not sure you can get that version anywhere else. I could be wrong, but I’ve never seen it. It's called a Talk Box. Frampton was working on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass when a country performer by the name of Pete Drake came in for a session. He used it with his peddle steel guitar. Invented it in 1959, so it had been around for some time before Frampton made it known internationally. Frampton eventually created his own and calls it the Framptone

Frampton was an overnight success with The Herd at age 15, As a teenager he played guitar & sang for Humble Pie in the studio & during their notorious tour of North America. He started his solo career at age 21 with Wind of Change attracting guests like Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman. It's my favorite LP of his by far. Play Fig Tree Bay, All I wanna Be (is by your side) and a creative, kinda psychedelic cover of Jumping Jack Flash--- with lots of killer Hammond.

It's called a Talk Box. A few people used it, but Frampton's use of it in this song is the most epic that I know of. The sound of the guitar is sent to the tube and the sound is shaped by his mouth then amplified via the Mike and associated system. Joe Walsh used the Talk Box famously also on Rocky Mountain Way (maybe other songs, I can't recall at the moment).

That thing is known as a mouth-wah. I was class of '73 and we made one of our own in high school! We got a stadium loudspeaker (long story) and the driver would unscrew off the horn. Off to the hardware store and get a reducer to screw on that will go down to a plastic tube. Run it to its own amp and mic with the tube right next to the mic so the mic picks it up. Put the tube in your mouth and play away! ☺

When his double album Frampton Comes Alive! exploded most of us had never heard of him or a talk box. It was instantly a hit yet it seemed nobody had ever seen him play as that was 1976 before much tv coverage and no videos. I remember first hearing the talk box parts and being told it was him making his guitar make those sounds. It's funny but people were actually disappointed when they learned it used that device and wasn't just the guitar. I'd highly recommend his more recent concert coverage of him covering Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun. It shows his greatness continued even after he lost all the hair.

Sambora uses it in several of their songs / videos, but it seems to often get unnoticed.

Knew you'd love it. Did we feel like they did? Oh yeah, we sure did. Oh what fun we had. BTW I'm No.33, that's a mystical number, right?

🎸 I saw Peter Frampton & The J. Geils Band at the Greensboro (NC) Coliseum soon after the Frampton Comes Alive album came out in 1976! Great show by BOTH bands! (You really SHOULD check out the LIVE album version of this!) 🔥🤘

Joe Walsh preceded this performance in 1973 using a Talk Box on Rocky Mountain Way. I believe Framptons said he first saw one sitting in on a session with George Harrison.

Learning to play guitar in the 70’s, Frampton Comes Alive was a must have album. Not just great songs, but a treasure trove of licks we could learn (steal). Thanks for taking me back

Great review! That plastic tube contraption is commonly called a "Talk Box" and became a kind of neat and fun but ultimately a novel effect as electronics and computers were beginning to take a huge hold in music (e.g. Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock...). The first recorded use in rock music that I'm aware of was by Mike Pinera of Iron Butterfly in their song "Butterfly Bleu" from the 1970 album "Metamorphosis". By far this was always my favorite Iron Butterfly album

If you catch the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's movie, Peter Frampton is Billy Shields so that's out there also. Also his album, Frampton Comes Alive is one of the best selling live albums of all time, up there with Thriller for MJ altho done in the mid 70s.

This is the song that takes me back to the years I was a teenager at high school. It brings me good memories. Peter Frampton Alive was one of the best selling LP. This is classic.
