R.I.P Tim, my brother, I treasure the times we had. Thank you for exposing me to Peter Gabriel & Genesis back in the seventies. You opened my eyes musically, which has made an indelible mark on my life. The times we did spent were a blast. I miss you every day, and regret we didn't spend more time together. Sleep well, my brother, sleep well.

and i too was tutored//mentored by Rocco while working for the water company in the watershed. i had heard Solsbury Hill on the radio and asked him what that was--he laughed and proceeded to tell me of Genesis--wow, what a trip through their works--thanks Rocco--we wound up going to NJ meadowlands to see Gabriel solo--he had oil derrick lighting--we studied before we went by listening to many of Peter's solo albums--i was well prepared to appreciate this concert--circ early 90s i believe

I still have the original CD "SO" that i bought way back in 1986. It costed me something like $25.00 or $30.00. This is when CDs were fairly new and exspensive. Played it on my NEW sony CD player that alone costed me $350.00!

When I heard the original version for the first time I wasn't able to listen to anything else for months. Emotional, original, powerful. Perfect.

Yes me too, i just responded to the post here, and i call this music, the LP for holy music. Those sounds from the synthiszers, and those grooves are from another world. Pure Gold.

He's the best!!! And let's be proud of Peter Gabriel for refusing to sing ( just a part ) of ' Down to Earth ' on the Oscars. Good for you, Peter!

Phenomenal tour! I took my brother for his birthday. If not for the final Pink Floyd show it'd be my hands down fave...instead it got edged out LOL! Seriously, what a magnificent, bigger than life show. We had seats close enough to almost reach out & touch the artists. And the looks on their faces, the fact they were actually having so much fun just took it over the top...along with the fact Peter's daughter sang backup on the tour! Rachel Z actually got our attention when Peter was walking inside of his super sized hamster ball, and mouthed "Watch! Watch this!!" Ol' Pete's next time around by her she hauled off and just kicked the hell out of the bubble! Peter was cracking up, she looked at us like "See?! Did it!" What makes this cooler, is that she's one of the single greatest keyboardists going-and I'm a keyboardist-or was-so that actually made the entire show for me! Hell...that made my year! Thanks for sharing this stellar performance!

Peter Gabriel sounds the same now as he did when i was a kid. I love his voice & this song means the world to, i too value the present(lets face it none of us R getting any younger) but songs like this have a life all their own. Remember the days you liked the entire album of an artist?

I love the vocal arrangement on this version. Very full. The sound quality is great as well, the bass / rhythm section coming through crisp and clear. Love it.

I hate when people start comparing Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. They have nothing to do with each other, other than having been both the frontman for Genesis. Their solo carreers are so much different, you can't compare them. Plus, the two guys are very good friends, so why even keeping the debate? Anyway this is a fantastic performance, much better than the studio version. The whole "Growing Up" DVD is amazing, one of the best video releases ever!
@exeter15889 жыл бұрын
You know I watch these videos of the iconic artists of my youth, and I think to myself: my God these guys are old, and then I realize that I to am old. Its a sobering experience. Enjoy your youth while you have it; don't ever waste time. But also understand that growing old is not the end. Only the end is the end.

David,,, God Bless and good health, Yes we forget that many artists are Blessed to be Jehovah's gift to mankind throughout the centuries. We allow ourselves to live in a small window of life with the work-a-day world we live in. Dang,,, I want my grandson to hear this song and so many others from great artists.

Total commitment to their craft; professional musicians being notes to life with feel and emotion. Tony Levin may be one of the greatest bass players 99% of America has never heard of and that is a sad state of today's population.

I agree completely. People are so used to turning their brains off now-a-days, they seemingly can't appreciate music that makes you think. Of course, since I'm an 80's kid, I am very biased towards that era, and that fact inevitably taints my opinion. But I still fight tooth and nail for the great music from the past and against the crap made today that's put on the radio.

When I feel depressed, I listen to music. When I feel dead inside, I listen to Peter Gabriel for healing, and it works every time. P.S. Bongo55able has a point. Didn't T. Sturgeon say 95% of everything is crap, I like to think that applies to music as well. Do what thou wilt, but keep an eye (and ear) for the better stuff.

Speaking as a person who was mostly listening to Metal in the 80's, I couldn't help but secretly love this album when it came out. Today, I consider it one of the best albums of that decade. Peter Gabriel is a true musican/artist whose music is timeless.

Saw Peter live in a outdoor stadium concert back in early 1987. It was awesome when it started to actually rain at mid show when he played "red rain" and with the red lighting it actually looked like red rain falling. The bass was loud and shook the stadium. Wow what a concert that was.

5:20 My favourite part of the song, and one of my all-time favourite moments in music. The exposure after so much chaos and activity, leaving a broken man standing alone, is so powerful. In a sense, the storm -the breakdown- is a moment of rapture, hiding the hurt and loss at its centre; in its the midst, you are aware of the pain and damage, but only when the thunder and rain stop, can you take stock of just how much you've lost, and how much abides.

These songs are such a nostalgic beauty. Why are we living in an era, where today's artists takes their popularity like a trophy? Genesis might thought of this right before then, but that doesn't mean it will always be the truth.
