In earlier seasons it was more common. Then (for reasons I don't even want to understand) they decided that nearly every character on the show had to act like a malignant narcissist about half the time or more. Practically every character became less likable but I think they're shifting away from that in newer seasons, thank God. "Nobody hates Meg? Make her seem absolutely gross. They don't hate Brian? Start saying things that were never established and write him to fit." My point is that for several seasons the single most common theme was "character betrayal". I temporarily stopped watching because of it.
