We have taken an exclusive look at Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson's secret passion - an astonishing collection of First World War memorabilia, including warplanes built from original blueprints.
The Lord of the Rings director shows us around his warehouse of artefacts in Wellington, New Zealand where he works with his team to restore and create his beloved aircraft, and we even see some of them take to the skies.
We have also been given a special look at Peter's first-ever movie he shot as a child using a Super 8 camera.
Thanks to Allan Udy of the Historical Aviation Film Unit for providing some of the footage.

There are very few movies that I regard as important to humanity. “They shall not grow old” is one of them. It restores and preserves the memory of that terrible war in marked detail. “Lest we forget - lest we forget!”

@@panzerlieb Seeing this movie/Documentary brings to life those flickering stilted images of a War largely forgotten by todays generation. Those men now seem totally relevant as if this was a video from only a previous decade and not 100 years ago. These men are now seen in a new light.

What appears very interesting about Peter Jackson is that he has attempted to bring the dreams of his childhood to life: from stories about his grandfather's experiences, model planes, and the books that he read as a young boy in his films. Well done!

Mr. Jackson's passion for quality had translated into those models as it does for all of his projects. What an extraordinary comment! Do you really rate LoR as ok, not great? The project was enormous in scope, way too big for most directors (have you any idea how many times different film companies had earlier considered LoR, but rejected the idea, because it presented so many difficulties?), but Jackson produced a highly successful blockbuster series which delighted most Tolkien fans. The Hobbit films weren't quite to the same standard, but nonetheless, I saw nothing ''horrible'' about them at all.

My Grandad, a New Zealander was in the trenches of WW1 manning a Vickers gun much to his displeasure, he just wanted to make nice wooden furniture. I have many memories of our chats but one in particular was sitting on his knee and being amazed by him telling me the fastest thing he'd ever seen as a lad was a horse that had thrown it's rider. How so much has changed. He said on inquiry of ' what were the Germans like Grandad'? to which he said 'the Germans like beer and sausages, and so do I, the Germans love their Mothers and God, and so do I, but we both hate politicians' how little has changed. On a foot note his PTS to his dieing day was he couldn't look at a horse without getting upset, the trenches were a living hell for man and horse.

As a kid in NZ, I followed my Dad in model aircraft making and filming them. One time I built a 1/32nd scale Hawker Hurricane, I had my hand wound Std 8 movie camera in one hand & holding the tail with the other (out of shot). With a breeze of wind blowing made quite realistic filming. At the end of their lives I would line up the ‘old’ models & blow them up with fire crackers & bungers on film as well.😁 Peter Jackson, his crew & Aircraft are National Treasures.

@@paulazemeckis7835 - One might think so. Actually his Fokker was shot up and unable to fly however that dying Baron landed his plane whilst dying from a headshot which is generally credited to a French solder on the ground with a rifle. the plane was picked into hundreds of pieces. The rudder cross was not burnt. Pretty funny, tho.

As someone involved in the creative industries, It just made me think, his attention to detail - obsession, just how well he does things, would make anyone wanting to work for him. Those guys who do are lucky chaps.

Re; 29:25 The Red Baron was not shot down in an aerial battle, he was shot down by an Australian anti-aircraft machine gunner while flying to low over the trenches.
@66hobgoblin81
@66hobgoblin81 2 жыл бұрын
@ John M Cameron. There has always been a level of controversy surrounding the shooting down of the "Red Baron". It was originally thought that a British aircraft had engaged in a "dog fight" with the "Baron" & had been shot down but another British aircraft had attacked the "Baron" from behind as he followed his stricken "dog fight" opponent down. It was then claimed that a Canadian ground machine gun post had shot him down as he came low to the ground & within their range. It was then also claimed by an Australian ground machine gun post that it was they who had shot him down. The argument went to & fro for years & eventually the "crash scene" & the location of of all three claimants at the time of the downing of the "Baron" were recreated & the eyewitness accounts of the three & other observers were collated & as far as was possible from the research it was concluded from that evidence that the location of the "Canadian" machine gun post was the most likely to have had the easiest & best opportunity to have shot him down.

Another reason I love Peter Jackson. My grandfather fought in WW1, survived, but sadly came home addicted to alcohol. I still love Archer Lynn Clayton for contributions to the success of the war. It's also sad to me that many don't value the lives of these brave souls who sacrificed their lives that we, successor generations. would enjoy freedom.

I was pointing out that his career path was set out from an early age. Nothing to do with Australia...nothing to do with Australian films or the Australian film industry. I don't even know what point you were trying to make. As for your second comment, again I don't know what you're trying to say.
