@mdo686 What an odd comment. Tons of people had AC in the 70s. And people still drink and smoke if they want to. But it is true that the internet is probably the best thing about now that we did not have back then.

@mdo686 True. Smoking indoors was fun, although I didn't smoke yet in the 70's, and I quit in 1987, before the irritating restrictions really became an issue. I smoked my last cigarette on a Greyhound bus. Long time ago...

This is why I liked Carson a lot more than letterman. Carson actually had a quick wit and here he is not making fun or being unkind to the guest but making observations and thoughts that are humorous. A kind man.

He was Irish through, and through his father expatriated to England. His father, for lack of a better term was a bookie, and apparently pretty good at it. He was raised in England in English schools hence the posh accent. I have no problem with the English or the Irish either way, but the surname is Irish as well. Much like Morrissey from the smiths, or the Gallagher brothers from oasis, who both happen to be full Irish descent but raised in England.

Having watched these shows before -- some of which I recall seeing on TV when it aired -- nonethless, I find myself returning multiple times, over time. There is a wonderful complication of David Letterman’s interviews alternating with him and Richard Harris. It’s a treat to watch. I would have loved to hung out with the two of them.

When they returned harris went on stage. A woman said Harris is drunk and he said you think in drunk wait for O'Toole. Legends all of them. These guys were half cut and delivered performances today most actors need special water and other things on their riders. Apparently O’Toole could be a violent drunk who would hang out with a sycophantic entourage and smash up bars and restaurants for fun then leave a wad of notes for the damage. Check out Brian Blessed’s dark stories of the man. He pissed his talent up the wall. That said he was the original bad boy of fame. Like Keith Moon’s more insane Father. @dougthedude523 жыл бұрын
@@dodieodie498 I agree, though I think the decline started in the 60s and somehow did accelerate in the 90s. I think we will compare the era we are in right now to the Middle Ages, where humanity was in a state of obvious decline. The best evidence of our decline are these old TV clips. People were so much smarter and tougher. The entire current generation could be described as having severe learning impairment compared to the men and women we see in these clips. It’s like they were another species altogether we have changed so much.
@dodieodie4983 жыл бұрын
@@dougthedude52 I agree. Maybe in part it is that this generation doesn't quite know or understand what it's like to be in a war or to be without a welfare state or to have to "make do". I'm not sure. It seems we are almost constantly looking to be amused or entertained by someone else. We have lost something somewhere. I do know that there was a certain way of thinking, and a recognition of what it meant to be respectable or classy or even just knowing what it meant to be true to yourself. I suppose you could also say it was grit. I don't think I"m expressing this well, and I certainly hope we aren't emulating the fall of the Roman Empire. But I do have a sinking feeling that we are a bit rudderless. Our compasses are broken. And what has been lost will never quite be fully recovered.

Let me start by saying I am a massive fan of Peter O'Toole. He was a mesmerising actor, a master of his craft, both talented and hard-working. He was a wordsmith, a scholar - his knowledge of Shakespeare was encyclopedic - a sportsman (who coached kids' cricket believe it or not) and a true gent to his fans, from all the stories I have read. I have loved the man for 30 years - ever since I was 15. That is why I find the wasted, OTT sozzled O'Toole on the talk show circuit churning out the same drinking stories (with guys like Letterman lapping it up) infuriating and painful to watch. He squandered his talent, ruined his health, sabotaged his marriage and just became a walking parody of the hellraiser alcoholic with one stupid act after another. How could this amazing, incredibly intelligent and insightful man also be so bloody stupid?!

Every once in awhile, I could stay up late and catch an episode of the late night with Johnny Carson, besides being naturally curious, i wanted to see for myself what the fuss was all about. I didnt it then but, Johnny Carson is the GOAT of late nights.

Times have certainly changed -- no TV show would ever bother bleeping the word "pissed" today.

Let's not forget "Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla" (1952), starring Sammy Petrillo, Duke Mitchell and of course good ol' Bela.

You were in the audience ? The show itself was never aired live. It was recorded in late afternoon or early evening and broadcast late at night on the NBC network.

I am not sure what it is but possibly a combination of everything: better actors, better TV host, audience's natural reactions. Overall better times. Thank you)

That's why I consider it a great tragedy that Mr Green Jeans (from the "Capt Kangaroo" series) never got his own talk show !

Love Oliver Reed and Peter O'Toole, drinkers, but so talented and funny. And not to forget Harris, their drinking companion.
