It's ok! You don't have to be an expert in order to forge ahead and make something cool happen. When it comes to painting, you just need to be willing to experiment and don't be too harsh on yourself when things don't turn out exactly like you expected them to.

⭐ *WELCOME BACK PETER* ⭐ 🖍Definitely missed your videos ❤ i hope you are feeling better Peter. 🖌I wanted to tell you that you are the main reason I got back into doing my paintings and artwork. linseed oil thins the paint and makes it dry SLOWER, turpentine & the like thin the paint and make it dry FASTER. so, if say you were painting a background that you want to dry fast, use some turpentine. or, if you want more time to blend on the canvas and you want your paint to stay wet longer, use linseed oil. i think that's it! someone correct me if i'm wrong but i think that's it. the cadmiums and other formerly dangerous ingredients have been replaced by safer substances, except for really really fancy stuff that you would never buy accidentally. i think you'd really like my ex-brother-in-law, you two unicorns could make literal beautiful music together.
@KenStentiford
@KenStentiford 5 жыл бұрын
The painting will last longer if you prime the wood. I use acrylics, and would never just start painting straight on the board. I use GAC-100 primer and then gesso. Side note, love your content Peter, please keep doing what your doing with the varied content. Love from NZ.
@peter_draws
@peter_draws 5 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "last longer" ? What will happen to it that it will no longer be a painting?
@hollybritt5225
@hollybritt5225 5 жыл бұрын
@@peter_draws Wood absorbs the oils and the paint may start to chip, and the pigments can discolor, because the wood itself isn't archival but the gesso would be. Also, you won't have to use as much paint to get nice texture, and oil paint is expensive. Brushes also last longer when used on a smoother surface.
@peter_draws
@peter_draws 5 жыл бұрын
I see, thank you for the info. It does say the wood is archival, but maybe they mean after it’s primed.
@KenStentiford
@KenStentiford 5 жыл бұрын
@@peter_draws Hi Peter, an example; if I painted my house I would prime then paint. This will add years to the life span and integrity of the paint. I know you sell your beautiful art, if you primed the wood first, overtime this will greatly improve colour retention and damage from the elements, like moisture and time. If the wood is primed and the paint is sealed the art will last generations. If you do neither the person who buys your art will slowly see it deteriorate.

They say "fat over lean" with oils. Start thin glazes, add more juicy details later. Oils take forever to dry, esp if thickly layered. I used to paint with oils, inherited my dad's gear, gave up because of the smell. Nice to see you again, Peter 💕

I LOVED when you said, "Peter does what he wants." I'm there with you fella. It also reminds me of the scene in the movie "Brave Heart" where William Wallace cries in a most dominant and yet post tortured victorious male voice, "FREEDOM!!!". *Smiling* OR when Roger Daultrey does the song, "I'm Free" in the Rock Opera "Tommy". His long ringlet curly hair and lithe Rocker body being all wild with the songs rhythm. I believe that was also at the ending of the movie because he got healed. At any length, yeah....

With oil its fat over lean so: Turpenoid - thin coats Linseed - fatter coats (over the turp) Stand oil - fattest coats Ofc stand oil needs to be used with 75% turpenoid at first and more stand oil over time. After many layers you can use stand oil by itself for very thick layers. Also remember that when you're mixing stand oil with turpenoid it doesn't mix when you stir it. It must sit still for a week at the least in order for the two thinners to mix. Love your videos! Keep doing what you want!

Also when you want to clean oil off of your hands you can just use liquid soap and scrub ur hands thoroughly, then use water to rinse. I've actually ingested oil paint over the years by accident, haven't had health problems- yet. If you're interested in some great oil painters check out Todd bienvenu, anselm Kiefer and Frank Auerbach.

Linseed oil is often mixed with other oils to create a medium for thinning the paints (much like water for watercolors). You use it to extend the life of your paint tubes and it also gives your painting whatever finish (matte, semi-gloss, gloss) you want depending on the ratio of linseed oil to other oils.

I LOVE the oil painting of what, to me, looks like a brain flying through space :) It's interesting to see how you see yourself, and have a "contest" to see how others see you and what medium they choose to use, my friends and I did a challenge of sorts to see who could draw what we see with their favorite medium, I ended up as a pencil drawing as not only a fairy in the woods, but also a charcoal superhero! it's fun to do that sometimes as well. Thank you Peter!

Linseed oil is like the binder that binds the paint. It will thin the oil paint, and also make it dry faster. Linseed oil will make the paint on the surface a little glossier, so I recommend doing finishing coats with linseed oil when you choose to do so.

Don't fret Peter, just about anything can done artfully. And just about any process can be lifted into an art form. So by all means, experiment. Because it's the process of doing that builds skills you need to do it artfully. Somehow I'm made to think of a saying I heard long, though I don't know it's source. "Practice doesn't make perfect. Practice builds confidence, and confidence builds a superior performance." Cheers!

Glad to see you trying new mediums, and music. You can put plastic wrap on your extra oil paints that you don't get to use in a painting or sitting with one time painting. It'll keep it from drying till you can use it again. Then, just slowly pull it up when you go to paint again. You loose a little. But, not all of it to drying funky.

As long as it is pure linseed oil, you're fine. Usually you want to thin with oil instead of thinner, because paint thinner will make your paint dry more quickly. Thinner cleans your brushes nicely. You can also use linseed oil it to prime in a pinch. It'll soak in and help with uniformity.
