PETER PAN MOVIE REACTION! Today I'll be watching a film I have never seen before Peter Pan released in 1953 for the first time. Here's my Peter Pan reaction. Want to watch the ENTIRE Movie with me? Check out: / timotheereacts
In this Disney animated film, Wendy (Kathryn Beaumont) and her two brothers are amazed when a magical boy named Peter Pan (Bobby Driscoll) flies into their bedroom, supposedly in pursuit of his rebellious shadow. He and his fairy friend, Tinkerbell, come from a far-off place called Neverland, where children stay perpetually young. Enchanted, the kids follow him back. But when Pan's nemesis, the pirate Captain Hook (Hans Conried), causes trouble, the kids begin to miss their old life.

Since you talked about Peter Pan being a bit creepy and evil-looking at times, in the original book he can be disturbing because he doesn't understand the concept of death, is super self-centered and doesn't show much concern for others, and enjoys violence as a game. It's even implied that he kills The Lost Boys who grow too old. He was raised by fairies, who are known to be mischievous and have a poor understanding of human morals. In the Disney version, this is toned down but due to being an eternal kid he is immature and can often be a jerk. And speaking of fairies, in the original book it's also explained that fairies can only feel one emotion at the time and they feel extremely strongly, so they basically have no control over their emotions. That's why Tinker Bell is like that. She's very interesting Disney character to me, as she is a good guy who can also do bad stuff.

I read somewhere in a book that Smee was basically the very picture of "the Banality of Evil" in he's basically dehumanized Tiger Lily and the other children Hook is trying to kill all out of his blindly "following orders." He even waxes sentimental about slitting throats and killing people when tending to Hook - in a way its dark to consider someone that jovial and seemingly kindly probably has a body count

About Tinkerbell's personality ranking from kind to psychopathic, the 2003 live action movie explained it better: fairies and pixies are born when a baby first laughs and, just like a baby, their minds only have space for one emotions at a time.

In the book, Peter as a child was taken to Never Land by fairies. At some point he came back but found his mother with new baby, thinking she had replaced him. The reason the Lost Boys are all boys is apparently because girls were too smart to be lured into Never Land.

32:49, in the original play (and later book but it works better in the play), Captain Hook poisoned a drink meant for Peter and Tinker Bell drank it to save Peter and Peter realized that Tinker Bell could only survive if children believed in fairies again so he tells the play’s audience to “clap your hands if you believe in fairies” and we the audience clap our hands so that Tinker Bell can come back to life.
@oliverbrownlow5615
@oliverbrownlow5615 Жыл бұрын
It's earlier said in the stage play that every time a child says he doesn't believe in fairies, there's a fairy somewhere that drops down dead. It's Tink herself who suggests, as she lies dying, that the reverse is also true -- that she thinks she can recover from the deadly poison if children believe in fairies. In a live stage performance, especially in a large theatre filled with children, the scene of Tink's near-death and resurrection is incredibly powerful -- ridiculously powerful if you watch it as an adult, fully aware of what a cheap, pandering device it is, but helpless to prevent yourself from crying and clapping along with the kids. Stephen Spielberg referenced this scene in *ET* (1982), first by having the Mom read it to Gertie out of a storybook, and encouraging her to clap to save Tink, and again in the scene where ET has apparently died, and has been placed in a body bag inside a freezer. ET comes back to life almost immediately after Elliott says, "I'll believe in you all my life," and as with Tinkerbell in the stage play, the audience knows ET has been saved when his light comes back on.

@@oliverbrownlow5615 Yeah. I saw the play Peter Pan as a kid and I loved it. Years later, I read the book Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie, which was essentially a novelization of the play, and the same thing happens in the book but it works better in the play because of audience participation

I'm not Indigenous although as a Hispanic I've always been "adjacent" to it and so while I could understand why the "Red man" element was offensive and cringe, what I always felt made up for it was that Tiger Lily was an absolute boss who after Hook kidnaps herand threatens to have her killed in such a way that would deny her an afterlife (by drowning),she shows virtually no fear and does so without knowing Pan was hiding and about to rescue her. She's also basically the only female on the island who doesn't harbor some kind of vendetta against Wendy (we see her kiss Peter but she's not shown as being aware of Wendy's seeing it and its done more out of gratitude than spite). I draw a straight line from TL to Jasmine, Moana, and most definitely Pocahontas (she was literally featured in the concept Gong Show art for the movie and Jeffrey Katzenberg greenlit it on the spot).

It helps that its one of the few times Hook comes off as legitimately threatening and menacing, completely dropping the gentlemanly facade and showing himself for the bloodthirsty murderer he truly is (heck in that state I wouldn't be surprised if he wouldn't have just killed her outright rather than wait for the tide to drown her if Peter hadn't shown up)

sorry but this literally isn’t your fight to fight. indigenous peoples have denounced this sequence in the film as extremely racist as it was then and now. they literally use multiple slurs for native peoples. feeling “adjacent” doesn’t warrant you to dictate whether or not this film is offensive. indigenous peoples with lived experiences are the only ones who should be leading this convo.

The 2003 version is even more amazing if you're open to watching it.The lead actors for Peter and Wendy were perfectly cast because their friendship translated on film and added onto the charm of the script, which itself was directly inspired from the novel. Some people didn't think it worked because Peter isn't supposed to be capable of romantic attraction, given that he's a child before anything else; but the main conflict of having to choose between the extremes of childhood and adulthood is still intact. The director really knew what he was doing in bringing out the best of the source material while also working with what he had at the time.

I think in the book, Neverland was simply an island across the Atlantic Ocean. I think the area is also hinted to be the location of the fabled Fountain of Youth, hence why everyone doesn’t age. Many interpretations make it seem like Neverland is a whole other world.

So the voice of George Darling and Captain Hook is the same actor which is playing in tradition of the play where both were played by the same actor. Before the Disney film Peter Pan was always played by a woman including the most famous one being Mary Martin, In the original story Tinker Bell drinks poison meant for Peter and the people in the audience are supposed to clap their hands to keep her alive and Walt had wanted to implement that idea in the film, but wasn’t sure how to do it so it was scrapped. In original story drafts for the film it was much darker and nana also went with the children to Neverland. So to explain the opening thanks to the hospital it is because J.M. Barrie left the rights to the books to them so whenever an adaptation is made they receive money. The dog giving them medicine is actually poisonous as it was made to make them sleep and what actual parents would give their kids. The idea I had as I always thought Peter was an elf too because of the ears and when thinking of wonderful thoughts they give Holiday themed ones. Despite long standing rumors of Marilyn Monroe being the reference model for Tinker bell that was not the case as she wasn’t even famous yet. In the original book Peter was a killer as he offed lost boys that became too old.

The original Broadway prodiction of the "Mary Martin" version of *Peter Pan* opened on Broadway in 1954, a year after Disney's version was released. The tradition of having a woman play Peter continued until *Hook* (1991) and the Jeremy Sumpter version (2003), and it's still done in stage productions. And as late as 2014, the "Mary Martin" version was revived on television in a new production starring Allison Williams. Bobby Driscoll was not technically the first male Peter Pan, either. Child actor Freddie Bartholomew played Peter in a radio version in 1936.

The so called "tonic" that Nana prepares for the kids is a concotion mix of alchohol and morphine which parents at the turn of the century, gave their kids for them to quickly fall asleep, especially when they were going to a party. In the swedish dub, it is refered to "vitamins" which was given to kids in the early 20:th century when vegetables were scarce, kinda like cod liver oil or castor oil (which has been proven to be poisonous later).

It's funny because on a YT video of the Native scene, a lot of the comments were from Natives saying that they're not at all offended and that it was their favorite scene in the movie. Especially back when this released, they were happy for the inclusion. And the song they sing is all about how their wives make them blush and that's why they're "red", haha! It's so innocent, but everybody has to be a damn victim these days.

I always found Peter Pan to be very entertaining, most notably with Captain Hook (my favorite character in the film), Mr. Smee, and Tick Tock, the crocodile. To me, they are the best characters in this film because they provide great slapstick comedy that’s very much like Looney Tunes imo, especially in the Skull Rock portion of the film.😄

I was lucky as a child to see the movie at the old Fox theatre in downtown San Diego from the balcony seats. I still remember the excitement. A couple years later we drove up to Disneyland in Anaheim during the 50's and instead of wanting the Mickey Mouse ears I wanted the Peter Pan cap with my name embroidered on it. I think Ive seen every Peter Pan movie thats come out including the silent movie version from England. I was fortunate to see Cathy Rigby when she played the title role in the theatre in San Diego. Awhile back when I moved to Vista (northern San Diego) our Moonlight Outdoor Amphitheatre did a production of Peter Pan which was outstanding. There's just something that fascinated me about the story.

Hook is a fantastic movie as many said, but another gem from my childhood I have to recommend is Mary Martin Peter Pan. Captain Hook in that version is SUCH a treat 😅 Also, before Robin played Peter in Hook, Disney World used to have a section of their MGM Studio park called “The Art of Animation” where guests could learn about the process of creating an animated film. There was a short with Walter Cronkite and Robin Williams where Robin was placed into the world of Peter Pan as a lost boy. I believe you can see it here on KZfaq.. that’s also worth a look!

I really can’t wait to see your reaction to the sequel Return to Neverland. Other Peter Pan adaptions I highly recommend are Peter Pan (2003) which is a live action based on the book, Hook which focuses on a grown-up Peter Pan, and Finding Neverland, which is an origin of how the play Peter Pan was written and it stars Johnny Depp. 🧑🏻‍🦰👱🏻‍♀️🧚🏻🏴‍☠️🐊⚔️💚💛❤️😮

It's funny that you say *"Peter Pan* is so dear to my heart," because Bobby Driscoll, the child actor who voiced Peter Pan and also acted out the role in live action reference footage used by the animators was previously the star of *So Dear to My Heart* (1948), reputedly Disney's favorite of his own films until he made *Mary Poppins* (1964).
