I saw Prof Schickele in Tallahassee in 1979. That time, he rappelled down from the balcony, because he was late and “couldn’t find his way in through the orchestra entrance”. The poor ladies next to me didn’t realize it was a comedic parody, and were scandalized, which made the evening all the more fun.

He did the same thing at Boston’s Symphony Hall when I saw him circa ‘79-81ish… My parents took me to see him, one of those family concert season tix things with the BSO. I was 8 or 9 when I first saw Schickele, the Kodo Drummers, Paul Winter Consort, and many others as well and still love them all!

Finally! I've been searching for this since I saw it on TV in 1975 on a road trip. A thousand thanks--one per laff!

This would be awesome background music for a Bugs Bunny cartoon! (Great on its own, too.)

Thank you very much. I had found the audio for this sometime ago, and read a summary of the sigh gags from a more recent performance, but nothing compares to seeing this masterpiece.

I like how the bass player at 7:58 is just glissing through the scale

This has come up since I last looked. RIP Peter Schickele.

This concerto was one of his earlier efforts, before he found the perfect ratio of shtick to parody. Unlike most PDQ Bach, it has to be seen performed to be appreciated. Still great to see two of my favorites, Fiedler and Schickele, on the same stage.

Very ragged woodwinds in the opening bars. Just the way P.D.Q. would have wanted it. And, of course, the deadly seriousness of the union musicians just waiting for the damned thing to be over.
