Peter Webb, Bet Angel - High profitability vs. High probability

Sometimes the best quality opportunities come from the least obvious places.
Keep your eye open for betting and trading systems that produce very high win rates. These are easy to create but often don't end up showing a profit in the long term.
When a loss occurs you may be encouraged to chase your loss or the, typically rather large, loss is explained away. But it doesn't change the overall long term result of the system.
A particularly dangerous version of this would be to carry a pre-off trade in-play in order to make it profitable.
You may get away with it for ages, but when the loss comes it will be significant.

A rarely articulated truth - and well explained, In the 1990's I was on the committee of the ill-fated National Association for the Protection of Punters, and we took a number of bookmakers to court following their refusal to pay out on winning bets that doubled the hole-in-one at two consecutive golf tournaments. Two guys - John and Paul I recall - had researched the real odds and were - correctly - confident of an eventual massive odds payout. The winning doubles they landed were laid at odds between 33x33 and 33 x 50. etc. Long story, but a good illustration of profitability trumping the perceived probability. In the aftermath, all bookies altered their golf odds and now such bets are either refused or priced too low.

Hi Peter. I too reckon this is one of the best you've done for a while! I'm ashamed to admit that I was (still am to a tiny, tiny amount) one of the people who went for the in-play, gratifying Lays - and got his fingers badly burnt! Like a few of the posters on here, I reckon the thing(s) that cause(s) me the most grief is the finding of a 'strategy' in the first place. So many things to choose from - so little time and all that! :-) Still, if I can take on board what you're saying in this one, then hopefully things will improve over the next few months. Once again, many thanks for laying it out for us 'thickies' :-)

Very interesting article Peter, Mind set is everything and most people need to see results from the start as you explained its the rationalisation of the losses that keeps people moving forward with the steady decline in their accounts. The number of times a tennis player loses when 20-1 on is more frequent than 20 to 1 but we all seem to believe that they just cant loose... be a contrarian !!!

Cant say I've learned anything other than think twice - two types of strategy Strategy1 - loses frequently small losses + wins infrequently big profit = if profit > loss then you are WINNING else LOSING Strategy2 - loses infrequently large loss + wins frequently small profits = if profit > loss then you are WINNING else LOSING Completly ignores the potential that someone has the holy grail Strategy3 - loses infrequently small losses + wins frequently big profits = net profitable

I couldn't agree more, in my punting days I eventually settled on backing horses which I considered overlays, they had only a 10% strike rate but since I backed nothing less than 14/1 all was well. I do think that inexperienced traders are also drawn in to looking for strategies with a high strike rate partly because of youtube et. al. since posters (I'm as bad as the rest) tend to show only successful trades

the old lay the draw system in football has proved volatile for me. although i've been profitable i've chased losses unsuccessfully. to limit the losses i've started backing draw scores as well for insurance (up to 3-3) and to avoid chasing bigger losses. i read somewhere someone said why would you insure it if you believe you are going to win? that maybe a rather arrogant view but not necessarily wrong if you have an exceptionally high strike rate (i don't). of course now i think thats not the way to go and to play it more cautiously. of course backing score draws as insurance may eat into your profits for lay the draw strategy but sometime could actually increase your profits if the draw price lengthens and you've laid your initial lay bet off and following this the match ends a draw. of course stake sizes come into play. i'd put less on 3-3 than a lower correct draw result obviously as generally speaking much less likely to happen

You have to mix and match strategies more frequently now. But the video more or less should temper your enthusiasm for pursuing strategies that win frequently as they are often, but not always, the less effective ones in terms of long term edge.

It's more a case really that you should seek counterintuitive strategies. Things that may not win frequently, but are profitable in the long term. People tend not to pursue them.

Great video. I have a question that's been bugging me for quite some time.And it seems like this is the right place to ask it??? Which is the best value - Cashing Out for a profit, or letting the bet run??? After you've traded on it of course so there's no loss of money if it loses. Now cashing out gives you instant profit which is very appealing, but I'm thinking in the long term. When I look at the reward I'll get for a horse winning it makes cashing out seem painful cos it's far less.
@betangeltv
@betangeltv 5 жыл бұрын
It probably deserves a video of its own, but while the net difference is zero, that would only count in the very long term. So it tends to make sense to hedge as you go for a number of reasons.

@@betangeltv Thanks. Because my stakes are low it makes cashing out more difficult as it's often for about 5p!

It can be hard seeing the steady drip drip drip of losses and self doubt and the doubt about the system inevitably creeps in. For me, one of the great benefits of automation is that you can play around with a strategy with nominal amounts and look at long term performance of your brainwave. If you have to toss it, no harm done except the bin is full of scrunched up A4 and the Excel sheet is clogging up the recycle bin.
@betangeltv
@betangeltv 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, automation removes systemic errors from any strategy that you pursuing. I run automated strategies that lose frequently and would be intolerable if you are watching it. But as it is, I only check it once a week and it's generally profitable.
@mrgirthy2111
@mrgirthy2111 Жыл бұрын
The thing with automation is, you cannot hide your activity. If a rival trader keeps seeing what you're up to and figures it out, you have lost your edge. So be careful with how you execute positions. This was a huge problem for me and made things harder whilst the whole point of automation is to make your life easier. Through experience and tenacity i have overcome these issues and the problems that come along with it. I suppose these problems are what makes trading a never-ending puzzle and hard to keep a step ahead of the other participants.

I have lost a big chunk of money trading and now after watching this video, I am unsure as what I should do from this point. I feel so burnt out that I virtually have no energy to do things that I used to do, like exercising 6 days of the week and then I have no money on top of it all. I feel that everything that I go to do is wrong and I can't put any more money into this. Is there anything that you can recommend for me to do? I don't want to give up, but if you say that it's time for me to do so then I will have to face up to that and just stop.

@betangeltv 7 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to specifically recommend something because I don't know what you are doing or how. Trading is great, but if it's making you unhappy or you are losing a lot of money then it's probably worth re-evaluating what you are doing and take a break. It's unfortunate, but there is a lot of duff systems and advice out there. So just following that isn't going to do the trick, unfortunately. You will have to learn a lot about yourself and risk taking to be successful. But the only reason I'm an advocate it that I I was rubbish when I started at everything, but it didn't' stop me.
@SDRockman
@SDRockman 7 жыл бұрын
I want to make it work so I'm going to keep going with it. I think that by investing in your trading classes would be worthwhile as I know that it's something that I am doing wrong, I just need to know what it is so I can correct it. I suppose I may try to scrape up some money for the trading classes and give it a go. Do the trading teachers know all the stuff that you know because I think it's best to learn from the man who started it all.

I do 5 races a night from Wednesday to Friday then 5 to 10 on a Saturday and make profit then chill out it all adds up . o and learn to press that button quick if it Goes red . hope you take my advice good luck .

But your win rate is 85% so does that mean you are following a high probability system?
@betangeltv
@betangeltv 6 жыл бұрын
If you run the strategy without any judgement it would yield just over 50% strike rate. So the gap between that and 80% is my knowledge / skill etc. There are a load of 'natural' high strike rate strategies, most of which just don't work.

I read somewhere can’t think where a guy said “do the opposite to everyone else “ he wasn’t taking about betfair just sports betting gambling call it what you want ,and he’s right just lay hot favs lay Man Utd ! Don’t keep backing 1.20 stuff it’s boring and not profitable! Quick example tonight I backed both teams to score NO at 2.32 or something close to that The YES was 1.73 really I thought they both would score but thought about “do the opposite to everyone else “ thing and you’ve guessed it it was 0-5 the result . I'm.just trying to be as prepared as possible and maybe I can do something now that I will greatful for in five years time. 😆 I've read bits of information on the BetAngel website that suggests that some people would have preferred to have taken action sooner, rather than be in a position of no going back, now. I'm not being critical or complaining about it, I'm being proactive in, what I consider to be, a business opportunity. Just thinking ahead and looking g for the best way, from someone who is, clearly, successful. Is that not what you did with Warren B, took advantage of his advice and experience?

There are many simple strategies for almost all sports. The issue is that they very rarely work for all races/matches/games. Their effectivness will be down to your ability to match the strategy to the event, or the event to the strategy. Nobody will just give you the magic ingredients, otherwise they would very quickly stop working due to the limited liquidity at a given price. People spend years developing systems and they're not going to ruin all that hard work for themselves for free or even for a few thousand pounds.

If you wanted to start to explore the world of trading strategies, the BetAngel forum has literally 100's of threads dedicated to various sports and advice from some very knowledgable people. It isn't impossible, but it will take you on a very long journey if you are a beginner.

Alan Sutton I'm not suggesting he tests it for me. he might know as soon as I mention it if it would work or not. Also testing isn't always that easy as mathematically you need around 5000 races/games before you can be certain if you have edge or not. strategies with negative edge could still be in profit with 1000/1500 games for example. like I said, he did mention in this video to discuss a potential strategy with him.

Not so long ago there was a horse with a price of 1000. So naturally your analytic mind would have kicked in and think: No way im gonna back that horse coz its not gonna win for sure, like not in a million years 100% ! Guess what. It won the race :) If u had bet on it £2 you would have won £2000 : ) How often does it happen ? No idea. Ask Peter : )
