Another brilliant medley from VoicePlay and Rachel Potter! I had forgotten how much I LOVE the music from The Greatest Showman until I heard this, and it was so nice to hear it done by some of the best singers around. So much fun with some super creative moments (as we've come to expect from VoicePlay) -- please enjoy! Also, be sure to check out the epic new merch from The Bass Gang (link is in the description) 😁

In The Little Mermaid Rachel sings in two roles, first as the mermaid, and then Ursula imitating her, so high for Ariel and lower chest voice in the other role. It's interesting. I love watching you watching /VoicePlay, I love how you love and appreciate Geoff and his gorgeous voice. His new one, to be shortly released, is rather different. No sudden suprises, no diving into the depths for shock effect, just a stunningly beautiful rendition. Brings tears and not just to me.

Just a late FYI - Hugh Jackman was stage musical theater before he was a movie star. He, like John Travolta & Kevin Bacon, got his start as a trained song & dance man. So he IS a trained singer just like the VP crew! And the woman they dubbed in for "Never Enough" was just supposed to demo it to sell the movie & music to possible producers. But when they heard her performance, the actress & rest of the cast recommended her voice be used instead. She's really an amazing singer & recently performed that song live on stage with Pentatonix! It was awesome! 💖

This is one of the best arrangements by Layne, imo. Everybody performed beautifully 🔥💯. I guess sometimes it pays off to think "inside the box" 🤣😍 I couldn't help but smile when you said Layne was the only one beatboxing, as I knew what was coming up; and sure enough, around 11:10 everybody does it, even Rachel. It was great! 🤯 Thanks for another great reaction and analysis, Peter! 💖

5:02 Pentatonix did something similar when they collabed with Lindsey Stirling for, "Papaoutai". The opera singer being protrayed by Rachel Ferguson in the movie was supposed to be Jenny Lind. Rachel's vocals for "Never Enough" were actually performed by Lauren Allred, who got her start on "The Voice".

Re Geoff/nasal… It seems to me he’s pulled way back on that. I think he might have seen some of the comments you mentioned or picked up on it himself watching the videos, because while I still notice it from time to time it seems like when he does it now it’s more intentional and less just a comfortable habit. He has this incredible natural voice and this last year it feels like he’s been working his butt off on the details.

The song "Never enough" was the choice of the Opera singer. Everyone in the audience seems off because it is not her opera NOT her way of singing. She was talking to P.T. Barnum. played by Hugh Jackman. She wanted him and she found out before performing that evening that he did not feel the same about her and that he loved his wife. That is why the song builds and she tells him a little something something!!
@janetdw
@janetdw 2 жыл бұрын
According to what I read, Hugh Jackman only sang one of the songs - the rest were done by a professional singer. The same for the person who played Jenny Lind. Also ( I didn’t notice it right off, but someone else made a comment that I checked out) Layne added a line in Never Enough. Cesar (and I think Eli) sings “can I ever be enough?” in that lovely wistful tone he can portray. Those details are what set VP apart. (Along with the lining of the music box being “Big Top” red and white stripes. I love the music box. It was fun to see them assemble it. But I especially love the parts where Layne pointed with the cane (to bring up the lights?) and the cane extended past the edges of the music box. Just like the hat toss it seems to reinforce the illusion that they are in this tiny music box. But…. I am not knowledgeable about opera, but I was astonished that I knew about The Swedish Nightingale and you didn’t 😳. Spool beds are named for her - she was hugely popular. I V am older though- but not that old!!

Excellent break down, as always! I always look forward to your new releases. Now. I looked through your videos and did not see Voctave. You say you like a cappella. Well, they are a beast in the a capella world. They sometimes collab with well-known soloists (Kirstin Maldonado, Sandi Patty, David Phelps, Rachel Potter, etc) and use their own talented soloists as well. They have many albums; but, songs? I’d look at Disney Love Medley (feat. Kirstin and then fiancée), Great Movie Medley, Someone Like You, & Impossible Dream. Bring Him Home (feat. David Phelps) is beautifully done. They have an entire release with songs like Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, a nod to Ella Fitzgerald, among so many amazing others. When people hear them, jaws drop. Most people get caught up in the beautiful voice of Kate Lott, the 1st soprano who is classically trained and reaches beautiful high notes. I love listening to all the middle voices interweaving. Lastly, their Prince of Egypt Medley is absolutely stunning and a nod to the original. They are in Orlando and many sing in Epcot as Voices of Liberty. You’re missing out if you don’t give them a listen❤️🎶 Don’t make me shout that I’m a Patreon, lol!!! All songs are arranged by one of the singers, Jamey Ray. He arranges each song to fit each specific voice. Very cool. Cheers!

In the original movie, one reason they might have had the famous "Swedish Nightingale" singer Jenny Lind not sing opera, other than to keep in line thematically with the rest of the movie, is that Lind had officially "retired" from opera by the time she toured America with Barnum managing her, singing other music that was said to better suit her voice. She was considered too "cold and Teutonic" for the passionate Italian opera but her voice was said to be one of the best of her generation. Hand Christians Anderson and Chopin were inspired by her. I loved this reaction and analysis! You always help to point out certain parts I missed with your careful ear and I enjoy how genuinely you enjoy the music and the performances. Super picky correction (that I wouldn't expect you to know). At 13:55 when you mention the high descant during the beatboxing section, that isn't Rachel. It is a voiceover by Elizabeth Garozzo - the same person that did the spirit voiceover for their frozen II Medley. Again, not something I would expect you to know unless you are the type of nerd (like me) that reads the credits section before listening - just want to give the credit where it is due.
@veronicathunander4579
@veronicathunander4579 2 жыл бұрын
I love VoicePlay in every way possible except just for this - that they don’t credit her in the video. I think she should be listed right before the patrons. I thought about it for FrozenII and got a bit disappointed that it didn’t happen here either. It seems that very few people read the credits and so not many people know that she’s the one doing that voice. She has a beautiful voice and I wish people acknowledged her for it!
@sarahereach
@sarahereach 2 жыл бұрын
@@veronicathunander4579 Interesting point. I know that I read the credits and that VoicePlay is better than most about having a credits section to look at in the first place. But yeah, since it is a small, easily missed part and she isn't actually in the video, an acknowledgement on screen would be a good addition. I know that during the Premiere, Layne made a special point to credit her when that moment came up in the video, so there is that.
@veronicathunander4579
@veronicathunander4579 2 жыл бұрын
@@sarahereach Yes, you’re right, I’ve noticed that there are others who don’t even have a credit list, so it’s great that VoicePlay does! I always check it too, I think it’s interesting to know who’s done what and perhaps VoicePlay believes that most people do check it. Perhaps many do! But based on reactions I’ve watched and comments I’ve read, many seem to take for granted that all the voices belong to the people on screen (which of course almost always is the case), even if they suppose that there are others involved regarding video, mixing, lighting etc.

I loved the group perc section. It was just so well pulled off. Also, I really do love the timber of Layne's singing voice. We only get to hear it just so rarely, that when he actually DOES sing even if just a little, I find myself hanging on his voice a bit. LOL. Eli really surprised me with his low section, too. I have never heard him singing quite that low before, and for him that's really low compared to where he normally sings. (TFW you as a female Contralto listen to a guy singing and your first reaction is "holy crap, that's way higher than I can ever hope to reach!" 😂)) His voice is so versatile that it's crazy awesome. Geoff being Geoff... I melt when he sings no matter what. LOL. But this was a nice mix of his range, I think. No lows just for the sake of going low, but lows that enriched the sound of the piece. Very well done. I think some of the nasal sound we get from him at times might just be from him pushing himself higher than his voice likes to be. I loved the music box, too. VP are so creative, and it's their theatrics that make them my fav of all the acapella groups. Thanks again for your expertise as well - the technical side of your commentary is why I watch your reactions. :)

If you enjoy Layne's singing, I'd recommend checking out his personal youtube channel (Layne Stein) and the studio he owns with Tony Wakim (PattyCake Productions)! They have some awesome Disney-style songs on PattyCakes (I highly recommend "It's not over yet" and "Tough Love") although they're not acapella. On his personal channel he often makes sweet birthday videos for his daughter, and definitely gets to showcase his own singing a lot more, plus the rest of his family! "Evil Like Me" is a great one for that, both shows off his high notes and low notes :)

You should react to Pentatonix if you haven’t. They’re also an a-capella group and they’re great!

Agreed, they definitely should have had an opera singer and song. They ALSO should have kept Jeremy Jordan in the movie instead of Zac Efron. Huge missed opportunity! Also Nsync did one of their hits in the toy store on a little toy stage 😄

Hi Peter. Look for the channel "Lucas Inutilismo" and find the video "2021 em uma música" and "2020 em uma música", I'm pretty sure that you'll like this videos. Lucas does a medley at the end of each year with the popular songs from year.

We watched this video last night and we weren't huge fans of the arrangement. I think they're incredibly talented but we personally didn't enjoy it. I like watching your reaction and analysis, though. While we didn't care for their arrangment, your analysis gives me an appreciation for all the work they put into it. Thank you!

It's an interesting way of looking at things to think of "never enough" as... well, effectively the movie's "villain" song. The character is pretty awful when you get right down to it, hiding behind this mask of purity, and how she doesn't take a cut of her performances.
