When Irving Berlin wrote the song, he had this as the beginning verse: The sun is shining, the grass is green The orange and palm trees sway There’s never been such a day In Beverly Hills, L. A. But it’s December the 24th And I am longing to be up north…. (And from there lead into the chorus of "White Christmas", which we all tend to think of as the song itself) The first time I heard those beginning lines was when Barbra Streisand sang it on her "A Christmas Album", which was released in 1967. When I heard it on that album, I assumed it was a special piece written for her, and would not learn until years later that it was how Irving Berlin had originally intended the song to begin. Don't know if it was Bing's preference to drop it that lead to it not being included when it was introduced in "Holiday Inn" or reprised in "White Christmas", but I have read that Bing did not sing it in any versions until his televised Christmas special in 1968. Like the 'lost' beginning version of "Over the Rainbow" (I first heard that verse sung again by Barbra and a couple of years later by Mandy Patinkin), it was very surprising to hear for the first time, but I have come to really prefer to hear it included.

This follows the Tin Pan Alley Verse/Chorus song form. There are many songs from this period that we only know the chorus. The verses have been "lost".

At 10:50 seconds, im pretty sure Geoff hit a G1. That is a crazy low note that I've only ever heard him hit 2 or 3 times now, that was just the longest I've heard him hold that note. Man has talent for sure!.

A little history: White Christmas was debuted in 1954 in the movie Holliday Inn (later renamed White Christmas). The minute he started singing I saw the scene in the movie where Bing Crosby opens a sliding barn door to snow falling thus saving Holliday Inn.
@r3adrpro811

While both movies take place in "inns" and have stage shows, Holiday Inn and White Christmas are very different movies made a dozen years apart. Holiday Inn costars Fred Astaire and Marjorie Reynolds and is in black and white. White Christmas costars Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney (George's aunt) and Vera-Ellen and is in glorious Vista-Vision and color.

@@r3adrpro811 you are so right. At the time White Christmas came out came out it was called a remake of Holliday Inn even though having live entertainment & an inn were the only common parts.

What I love in this, apart from the singing, is the beautiful smile he keeps giving us. He really seems to be having so much fun in this one. What part of the singing do I live best? Hard to choose, the harmonies are wonderful, as always, but I think I think his higher part, by Geoff in white sweater, is particularly pleasing. But yes, G1 Geoff does it again. Lovely reaction.

My favorite part is not even the music this time, it's that he's smiling throughout. So much of his recent music has been dark, sad, or scary, that we haven't seen his great big grin. It is great to see him having fun! Now my favorite part of your reaction was the unrestrained joy on your face with that last run. Thanx for reacting to this. I hope you are planning to react to Voiceplay's Christmas Don't Be Late. Geoff is bouncing all over the place in that one, and his Disney Princess makes another appearance. Just so ya know!

The part about the sun is shining in Beverly Hills LA is not new. It is an original lyric to the song. According to a couple of articles, I read Irving Berlin meant it as a satire to the LA Hollywood lifestyle since he was a New Yorker. If you think about it, it is written from the viewpoint of a Californian since we rarely see white Christmases. A New Yorker they rarely see anything else. I did check several sources on that and I remember hearing it as a child. Of course I’m really really old so I have that over you. I also remember it being the Bing Crosby version rather than the one from The Platters.

(Hello Mr Gorythm. Please take note of Mr Barber's works. Thank you.) In case the new one fails, old reliable's there. I guess we know how the new one faired. The gaps in the chorus are from the version by The Drifters which heavily inspired this arrangement. Their version was repopularized in the Home Alone and The Santa Clause films, and it also inspired Elvis' cover. Also, I love watching your face go from Surprise to INCREDULOUS SHOCK! at 15:18 .
