“Arirang” is a Korean folk song, sometimes considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea. Arirang is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. But it is the name of a Korean mountain pass. Nobody knows who made this song. Titles of different versions of the song are usually prefixed by their place of origin. At first, it was the song of ladies who had to send their husband somewhere. But it became a popular song when Korea was ruled as a colony by Japan in the early 20th century. (www) The History of Korean Oppression: There is a typical folk music in Korea. It demonstrates the loving and caring in this nation, and it is a patriotic song to evoke public’s personal feelings. Those sounds, called the “menari note,” are associated with children crying, the playing of willow pipes, the chanting of funeral casket bearers, and multiplication-table rote exercises. This melody is the archetype of sounds most familiar to and cherished by Koreans. () “Arirang is beloved by the Korean people and can be sung by virtually all Koreans, so it is clearly a critical factor to assure the unity of the Korean nation”:The Korean In the early 1900s, Japan attempted to implement a cultural genocide in Korea.Japanese efforts to control the Korean peninsula aimed to eradicate the Korean language, Korean family names, and Korean cultural practices. Korean men were coerced into enlisting as Japanese soldiers in World War II. Korean women were captured as sex slaves (known to many as the pejorative euphemism “comfort women”) in military rape camps until the end of the second World War.A tragic song of separation and lost love, Arirang is a national symbol not only of Korea’s distant past, but also its turbulent modern history. It served as a symbol of Korea’s struggle for independence under Japan, and its relevance has remained throughout decades of division and fraternal hostilities.“Arirang represents all the joys and sorrows in the history and lives of Koreans,” says the National Folk Museum of Korea. “It is deeply rooted in Koreans’ emotion as the cultural DNA.” (Arirang, a song of joy and sorrow in modern times) People grow up with this music no matter they live in North and South, they all listen to this kind of music and it evokes their nostalgia feelings about their nations and cultural they carry with. The separation between two countries and the sad past make this music more exotic. (www)

Arirang is a very old Korean folk song (so old, there's no agreement on how old). The song is generally about separation and reunification. Here, Arirang in this arrangement is more specifically about the Korean separation into North and South, the Korean War in the chaotic middle section, and eventual reunification in the future. It's a perfect Korean song, full of sadness, conflict, hope, and romanticism. The Korean heart is complicated, and so is this song.

Sohyang's true talent is her purity of tone and balanced vibrato all through her range. Some other top singers can reach high to some of her notes in a contemporary context but that mix and that clarity is the real sauce for Sohyang. It's why so many professional singers and vocal coaches gush about her singing. When she sings soft songs you really get to hear the pin-sharp clarity of her tone. Beautiful!

Immortal Songs isn't really a competition. The show invites 6 or 7 established singers, stars in their genres (pop, rock, theatrical, classical, traditional Korean, etc.), all paid for their performances addressing the episode theme (this was for "Traditional Korean Songs" and "Bridge Over Troubles Waters" was for "English Pop Songs Koreans Love"). The studio audience does vote for their favorite performance to make it more interesting but there are no monetary awards nor advancement to another round. Sohyang participated 8 times between 2014 and 2022. The show has the highest production values anywhere - many episodes are amazing.

In the 'Immortal Songs' broadcasting program, the best singers who have been proven in the past reinterpret old classics in their own colors as a tribute to them and perform on stage. Since the best singers appear, it is a meaning of dedication rather than a meaning of competition. So ranking doesn't matter. Each episode has a different theme and selects songs. For example, 'pop song loved by Koreans the most', 'ancient folk song of Korea', 'folk song that has flowed', etc. In fact, 'Arirang' sung by Sohyang is so old that we don't even know when it was handed down orally. In a different sense, is it like a national identity at the level of the national anthem? She arranged it into a Sohyang version. People of all ages and genders cannot sing songs of a super high-level class like that. haha

This song has been around a while, but it deals with the desire for the reunification of the two Koreas. So it either dates from just before the Korean War, or it's an older song that picked up that meaning at that time. I believe So Hyang did this arrangement, and she surely had that audience in the palm of her hands with it.

Arirang Alone is based on a very old Korean folk song. It's about the split and longing they have for the North and South to be reunited. She really tells the story of this happening through the performance. Sohyang is a great story teller. I will suggest either "I Will Always Love You" that she did on Begin Again Korea. This is a stripped down version or "Everyone" a gospel song on Immortal Songs two again, which is a very long power house performance.

Thank you for replying to his question. I would add that this song is about uniting ALL parts of the country--that's why Dokdo Island (controversially claimed by Japan) is included. It has MANY versions and has a long oral tradition.

SoHyang also arranges every cover she sings. She is the master behind the soloist violin and all the orchestra member as well as the backing singers. There are videos showing pieces where she is in a practice session and she is explaining to a violin section how SHE wants them to come in. She is more than a great singer. She has touched everyone in this performance so they sound the way she wants them to. Most of her live performances sound like a studio recording they are so perfect.

So, Arirang Alone is a modern rewriting of a very old folk song, which has many different variations across Korea simply called Arirang. The folk song can vary quite a bit in both lyrics and melody, although thematically it's always about two lovers being separated, and typically there is a shared melodic theme as well. The modern rendition heard here is more specifically about the partition of Korea and the pain it has caused everyone, and expresses a desire to be unified once more. Arirang is seen as an unofficial National anthem in Korea.

Love your last 2 reactions to Sohyang! In the future, I hope you have an opportunity to check out her performance of "Everyone". She has said it was the most difficult performance of her life and she has yet to do a second performance of it to date. Some others that are very well known and revered are "Fate (Korean)" and "I have Nothing (Whitney Houston cover)", "Holy Night" cover. Other than those, I would definitely check out all her performances on the Korean Show "King of Masked Singers", every performance was a masterclass and she set a record with 7 wins. It's speculated that she ended her run on purpose because of upcoming engagements by performing a "rap" song, which in itself, was amazing. Unfortunately, it's well known that rap songs don't do very well in competitions For a high note ending I would recommend her original song "Dream" for a Mariah Carey "comparison". Thanks!!!

This is one of the best breakdowns I have heard by any reactor. Thank you. So Hyang is the most complete female voice I have ever heard. She can really sing anything. Her mixed language (Korean-English) song entitled 'Everyone' (also from Immortal Songs) is said to be, by many vocal experts, a masterclass in singing. It is seven minutes plus of intensity, displaying range and power and impossible stamina. I think there is a version with all English subtitles but the other has subtitles in each language, so when she's singing Korean one does not know what she is singing (unless you know Korean)... look for that other with all English subtitles. You will be further blown away. Her version of Whitney Houston's 'I Have Nothing' is also otherworldly and I think surpasses any live version ever done by anyone, including the original. But it has to be the one from the DMC Festival with her in a dark blue dress. Great reaction, thanks.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsuPf5ygy865pGw.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on KZfaq. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on KZfaq and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas. Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9eVeMJi07aRe58.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on KZfaq: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipqFrKx-0MrdZIE.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNJdnbtq0KjXdac.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via KZfaq, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her. Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZyZe8tl3qjcc6M.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gth-nrmD17Gbj30.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdyjmqad0cmygHk.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNqVYNRk0NvSoGw.html Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448 And finally “Will You Be There”: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKiUhtOW3bvcmZ8.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJilktOe1L3cmmw.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNSAdM6j3tjdl4U.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

From listening to her, I can tell she lightens up her mixing to a more balanced one around D5 and Eb5. Then she adds more head to be able to mix that high. She's an incredible technician. She's approaching 45 with such a beautiful and healthy voice.

Thank you Peter for your Wonderful Reaction Video of SoHyang! Isn’t she something! About 9 years following her , through 8 bouts of Pneumonia over about 3- 3 1/2 years, where she almost quit singing! As for the Arrangements, she is deeply involved in all the arrangements of songs she sings! You are correct she is firstly a Gospel Singer and deeply Devote Christian! Her Husband Parents are both Ministers! He is her Manager and She is in SoHyang’s words, her Best Friend ! I am suggesting a song she wrote herself, “ Dream”. Her nickname amongst those closest to her is,” Dreamer.” The song encourages us to never give up on our Dreams , no matter age Orr health and circumstance! She says If I can You can too ! The song is very energetic and it is a Wonder she csn maintain any power singing so high so long! In the end she almost falls from lack of Air ! The last note is D6. It is said she can sing into 7 th octave ! Amongst her many strengths is her Courage! She says she never wonders or thinks to much about reaching any note! Having heard her sing so much, I know it to be true ! Some of her Gospel Performances she sings even Higher Dream with English subtitles kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nM9phtmBur7QnZs.html Here she is Singing with Kirk Franklin while in Korea. He gets her going crazy and it seems so easy for her! Kirk Franklin in Korea SoHyang - Lean on Me kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ip97Z5d4s7HImYU.html If your ever interested in her I have many video’s on her life some fairly brief but so very informative! She Has excellent Character! Thank you once again !

She has said in multiple interviews that what we are hearing as belts in the fifth octave are actually mixes. She credits her work with Seth Riggs and his Speech Level Singing concepts for helping her find what is a perfectly balanced mix voice that gives her the ability to navigate her transitions as if they aren't even there. Loved the analysis and obviously you have to analyze her performance of Everyone next (the Vimeo version with subtitles), and I'll be shocked if you are able to bring that video in under 45 minutes 😛

Great analysis again Peter, and yes, that mixed belty Bb5 is her trademark, I don't think anyone on the planet can hit that note the way she does...so supported and resonant. One of my favorites from So Hyang that remains pretty unknown is "In The Flower Garden." If you happen to watch the live version with the colorful flower lights, she plays with the melody by lifting up into notes so often that it's almost a tease for the audience as to whether she's going to hit the actual melodic resolution or not for a second. The dissonance that results is so fascinating and beautiful to hear. And if that's not enough, she has an angelic head voice section that is clearer than my future.

In case no one else mentioned it, SoHyang can, in fact, sing in a whistle register. I've only heard her sing whistle notes a few times. I don't think it's something she does very often. I believe it's mostly when she is covering a Mariah Carey song with those signature whistle notes. Anyway, I enjoyed your reaction. Thx!

This is a traditional Korean folk song, hundreds of years old & when heard in most forms it is a very simple, ploddy number that many folk songs are but this, as always, is sohyang’s own arrangement, a talent in itself. The thing with Sohyang is that just because she is capable of doing crazy stuff it doesn’t mean that she does it & when in the 1st two passages you were saying that she just has a nice voice but one that many others have also you sounded slightly disappointed that she wasn’t blowing you away. She could, if she wanted to, go from start to finish of a song belting/mixing in that upper register because she can stay up there for days, it’s her sweetspot, but you will never find Sohyang showing off, her only interest when singing a song is to tell the story, to take you on a journey & if the bonkers vocals aren’t required to tell the story, then she won’t put them in her arrangement. Sometimes you find singers who are technically brilliant but basically just produce nice notes on stage, as of it were an excercise, but have no connection on an emotional level & vice verse but Sohyang has both & I think that is why we who don’t speak korean still find her performances so enjoyable because we can feel that she is telling a story & taking us on a journey, we don’t need to know what each word is. Many tractors, myself included, have actually had subtitles on our screens but have been so captivated by performance that we’ve totally been oblivious to the subtitles anyway. I have heard Sohyang go bonkers high when she on stage with Kirk Franklin & she was just freestyling in the performance of the other ‘lean on me’ ( gospel version & not the lean on me that most of USA readers familiar with). She went off & I can remember the notes coming up on screen & all I could see was A this & A that. You will probably gravitate towards songs you may already know in future, which is an ideal way of no only hearing amazing vocals I think Sohyang also been a great musician & doing her own arrangements is the best scenario because only Sohyang truly knows what she is capable of & it maybe different if she was doing the arrangement for another singer because she must naturally gravitate towards what she is capable of vocally & not what your average good vocalist is capable of. I think her talent for arranging is obviously more apparent in songs where we are already familiar with the original because this shows a contrast. Her performance of ‘lean on me’ from the same series, performed on front of Michael Bolton, is a good example of this because believe me, you won’t ever have heard ‘lean on me’ anything like Sohyang performs it .michael Bolton was in the audience & he was literally rendered speechless when they went to him for his comments when she’d finished the song, when he did get himself together he just said ‘that was spectacular’ & went on to say that in that performance she had risen to the role of virtuoso. This lady, although gospel at heart, can literally sing any genre, you can hear her rock it out, she can rap, obviously the power ballads, she can do Disney ( she is the singing voice of Moana in the official Korean dubbed version of the movie, so check out’how far I’ll go’ in Korean), gospel obviously, but she can also sing soul, blues & jazz. Check out her version of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘mist’ from the ‘begin again Korea’ series. I can imagine the songs you are been recommended & I am sure that the 2 you have reacted to so far are pretty high on the list, but I think that a song that could well be near/or actually at the top of the list of most recommended is her performance of ‘everyone’, a song many people say is her masterpiece & a song Sohyang herself is the most difficult for her to perform, mainly due to the dynamics & the long sustained phrasing & a lack of places to take a good breath, but to me it is 7.5 mins of vocal brilliance.🎉

Great analysis of truly a great singer. SoHyang just amazes me of how well she can change and sustain her dynamic range from such high notes and then flip back down to her low soft notes staying in perfect pitch so quickly and so many times in a performance. There are so many great performers who have her dynamic range but I have never heard any other singer that can change up so quickly and stay so perfectly in pitch. Please let me know of any other singer that can do what SoHyang can do. I would love to know. Once again love your detailed breakdown of a singers style, technique and range. Keep up great work!
