About the lyrics: I listen to harsh vocals like they’re another instrument on initial listens of songs, later I look up the lyrics and it adds another layer when listening again.
@ryanrobinson4072
@ryanrobinson4072 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely! I usually hear the vocals first as a beat in the mix. I usually don’t pay mind to the actual words unless the music has done its part for me. Then I will go back and focus on lyrics. It’s a total experience and dissection of the overall art and it’s the process of processing that makes me love heavier music. There are so many layers that you can discover and rediscover over and over in each song. It’s very complex and love it

I heard a pretty interesting analogy in terms of why metalheads have zero issue not being able to understand the lyrics or veery loosely follow along : "When we hear a singer performing in another language than our own, we tend to not really care as much about understanding the words at that moment but rather try to understand the passion in the voice and the technique. In the same sense, we try to do the same with harsh vocals. We might not be able to understand the lyrics well, but goddamn are the vocal techniques that keep getting either invented or put a spin on is fascinating, and the passion behind what they do." Another quote I liked, came across it not too long ago : If we have genres of music like we do movies, why can't there be a horror genre? That's what the really heavy metal portrays to me. You have singers that sound like goblins, zombies, demons, eldritch abominations. Sounds like horror to me"

You absolutely get adjusted to the sound of these types of growls with exposure. You start to pick up certain consonant sounds and can dissect the lyrics from them easily enough. I hear this like plain English now - but it also helps that I can do what Will's doing (less professionally of course LOL) Also a note on the genre having abrupt shifts, you should get into some prog metal. Something like Periphery would be a great addition to your channel.

Thanks! Will has also made a one take vocal performance of this very song, where you can see his face making all the sounds clearly and witness how he does not need fancy editing and layering to be a beast. For reactions I might suggest Will Ramos doing vocal cover of Sleep Token: Chokehold. There you can hear his gorgeous cleans and get an idea about what his singing voice sounds like. Some screams, too, to showcase the smooth transitions. When it comes to metal lyrics, the long standing tradition has been to sit down with a new album with lyrics leaflet in your hand for couple of first listens so you learn to follow the lyrics. This was done already on era with lot less distorted lyrics, and it still works.

It seems to me the very best screamers tend to have very good clean singing capabilities, too. It might be related to the fact that to do dirty vocals on very high level you have to have really solid breath support and knowledge about how to manipulate the vocal tract. Which then lays a foundation for interesting cleans, too.

I can never get enough of these reaction videos of extreme metal and harsh vocals. Both because of the shock factor and because of how interesting it is to hear someone trying to explain how they are made. For me regarding listening to music I kind of rarely listen to the lyrics, or even look them up. I know I often miss out a lot but I've always just accepted the vocals as "just" another instrument. I remember once when I looked up the lyrics to a metal song I got disappointed and since then I've kind of avoided it. I most likely have a bunch of diagnoses, whereas ADHD is one of them, so I easily get overload if there's too many impressions. Most people gets over exited by this kind of music but for me it's kind of more relaxing, I know it sounds odd but the only way I can explain it is that it must be a combination of my ADHD and that I have blood type A that naturally has a higher level of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. I work my best when I can have a wall of sound around me, so I can focus on what I want to do. That's when I thrive! Something else I've noticed with myself is that I am drawn to music with odd time signatures and seemingly irregular tempo. I don't know why. You are totally right about the drummer (all of the band members are of course very talented). But check out one of the videos where he plays one of their songs on Meinl cymbals. He is not even having his eyes open during the fastest parts, but when he plays the slow parts he does. This video perfectly shows that with the commentary of another drummer: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e5aEmZOXx5jYdGQ.htmlsi=aoDbCxPXJI9MD2b0 Btw, this is Symphonic Deathcore so you are right about the strings other than guitars. I am also impressed that you got deathcore right, because many don't. A hallmark for deathcore music is the breakdowns. Another band that is starting to get more attention, and rightfully so is Mental Cruelty. The music videos for Lorna Shore and Mental Cruelty's videos are directed by the same dude so you'll see some similarities. I'd totally love to see you, Elizabeth and Will do a reaction together to one of Mental Cruelty's songs from the last album Zwielicht. Even tough I love Will Ramos and Lorna Shore, I am a bit more infatuated in Mental Cruelty because they are taking a bit darker approach since they with the last album started to implement black metal to their music. So it's now Symphonic Blackened Deathcore. I guess some of the reason for why I like them so much, besides the before mentioned, is that I have my roots in Germany but I am from Sweden. Btw, you do know there is a harsh vocalist that also is named Barber right? Tom Barber, an obvious check out!

This song was my introduction to the Death Metal scene, and I was definitely expecting you to be very shocked when you started listening to this 😆. It's not an easy song to listen to because we can't hear the lyrics very well, and there's a LOT going on instrumentally, but I think that's what is making Lorna Shore stand out among the other death metal bands. Elizabeth and Will had said that he uses his false vocal cords to create the sounds that he uses while singing, and that he does it healthily with very little formal training (I think?? It's been a while since I've seen those videos), is a very rare talent among singers who use harsh vocal techniques. Thanks for taking the time to create and post this video Peter!! Greatly appreciate it!

Is the Will Ramos -> Sleep Tokan pipeline about to happen to Peter as well?? Hahaha great reaction If you want to hear Will’s singing voice, either of his Sleep Token covers are great. He stays true to the originals, with some added Will flair lol. Also, Sleep Token is another band that has crazy transitions section to section sometimes. They’re well known for being whatever genre they want to be and it’s always fun seeing people react to them for the first time. The Summoning and Take Me Back To Eden seem to be a lot of people’s starting points. If you like soulful vocals, you could do something like Bloodsport (from the room below) which is just Vessel (the singer) and piano, or maybe The Apparition or Rain which are two of my favorites right now. Lots to choose from but The Summoning and TMBTE are good introductions to their sound and Bloodsport is great for hearing the emotion he can get out of his voice. Rain is just a fun song to try to sing along to for me, with some vocal range in it.

THANK YOU for drawing that comparison to Deathcore and Kpop. I have been listening to both genres a LOT for over a decade, and I could never figure out what it was about the two genres that I liked so much. I chalked it up to both having "hard to understand lyrics" because that brings a lot of texture to the ears that you dont really get from any other genres. However as time went on and both got easier for me to understand as I learned/ got familiar with them, but there was still what felt like magic that was never lost to me. Once you said that I felt like I finally understood why my love for both was so strong and unmatched by other genres (which I do enjoy other music, but they are easily my top two) and now I can actually explain to other people what it is.

I was watching your analysis and breakdown on Gigi's cover of Unholy, you mentioned that you like dark gritty stuff so here's a new rabbit hole for you to dive into-Ado. I reccomend going for 1) Usseewa 2) Unravel 3) Crime and Punishment 4) Tot Musica Any of those. Your videos are amazing, as always.

Omg I'm so glad you see that similarity between kpop and metal! My 2 fav genres lol most people think they couldn't be more opposite but ive always thought they had similarities with the like organized chaos and huge sound switches and stuff.

16:58: it's even more impressive than that. Because double kicks doesn't mean that every time you hit it happens twice, it just means that you have a second pedal so you can use both of your feet, which is really hard to control specially at those speeds, and it's already pretty damn hard to get there in the first place
@darmakx99
@darmakx99 2 ай бұрын
It's not just the speed that's impressive (though it definitely is), it's also the precision that blows me away. When I attempt to drum on stuff with my hands and feet I quickly get sloppy and tired, whereas these drummers continue to sound like a fucking machine gun while staying perfectly on beat (to my untrained ears, anyways).
@619tmFALCON
@619tmFALCON 2 ай бұрын
@@darmakx99 Yeah, that's what I meant by hard to control. I started learning double bass drum recently and I can get to 140bpm, but even if I have the speed to go faster I just can't stay on beat. Bear in mind, though, that these drummers aren't perfect all the time and almost always the studio versions are quantised. Still, I don't think it's the case with Austin, because in the videos he recorded with Meinl you can tell it's not quantised when he plays fills, but his feet are still extremely precise. Edit: I forgot to mention that the techinique Austin uses (heel toe) is really hard to nail at SLOWER speeds, yet he does it seamlessly. Just goes to show how much control he has.

Now you need to check out Dickie from Infant Annihilator. He's Will's biggest example, the 'snarl' in the end is actually a shoutout/reference to Dickie he invented it.

You definitely learn to get the lyrics on the first try when you’ve been listening to harsh vocals for a long time. Almost like a dialect. Btw, Dicodec is a guy who “deconstructs” the song using software to show how it’s made!

When I was first getting into metal, i started with the ole death metal, and when i could understand cannibal corpse, everything became easier to understand. That said, I love Will's vocals because when you're a bit familiar, you can understand everything. Same with Tatiana with Jinjer. They both really focus on enunciation especially in their growls so that their lyrics are heard and understood. Love your reaction!

I don’t know which is better, this analysis or learning that Will is casually going to Opera shows 😅. His cleans absolutely took me when I first heard Hypnosis. I believe that came out shortly after this beast of a song, and I couldn't process the fact that they were the same person.

The vocals in Suneater are even more incredible than Into the Hellfire, if you're looking for another Lorna Shore song to dig into I'd recommend that. You get used to harsh vocals, definitely, and Will's enunciation is actually really well thought out and clear. Not gonna lie though I definitely check lyrics the first couple times I listen to a song, and I can't focus on lyrics while also paying attention to the other instruments until I get used to a song - so I'll listen for vocals on one playthrough, then guitars, then drums, etc

Funny you brought up the voice acting. Dickie Allen from Infant Annihilator wanted to be a voice actor for Hollywood and that’s why he sharpened his craft so well. He ended up recording vocals on in these types of bands to make ends meet. He is now one of the most prolific metal vocalist of all time. Check him out.

@PeterBarber Baritone here. Warmed up properly, I can hit Peter Steele bass rumble LOW B4, all the way up to lower Alto. You want a real interesting voice to listen to, Dani Filth from Cradle to Filth. He goes even higher. BTW, I love the Jargon. I'm one of the viewers that understand all of it. Yeah, most "low" growls are not really that low. The Charismatic Voice talks to him all the time. Also, they actually stuck a camera down his throat to show what's happening when he does this kind of thing.
