Just bought this exact truck. The previous owner parked it 15 years ago in a field when he retired from trucking. Just started the restoration process.

The truck sat a very long time before I got it. That was 6 years ago. It has survived me putting it OTR with a flatbed, local with flat/van...and even a company driver who let it get hit on the driver side. I just put a new fuel tank on it. She is the ol girl that will not die. No matter how hard I am on her, she keeps going. I will say, 2 years ago I rebuilt the engine, sent the transmission off for a rebuild, and put both rebuilt rear ends in it. As long as she is getting fuel she runs. The most amazing truck I have ever owned!

That was way cool to say the least! We ran a ‘84 359 with the 3406B in it. The engine was actually painted white, I’m not sure when they started going with the traditional Cat Yellow, but it was by 1987, obviously. That old mechanical Cat engine was always up to the task, no matter how steep the mountain or hills were. Used to run it up the Grapevine on the way up to the Bay Area & it handled that without even breaking a sweat. Good to see one these days, even if it’s just on a video, but it makes it better when it’s in a 359! The old Beach Boys song could be reinterpreted with the numbers “359” instead of “409”. I know what you mean. that B model is a work horse. You got a damn good looking Pete yourself. I'm about to start using this one for some flatbed loads. It will be the first time she has ever really had to pull anything heavy. I'm sure once I get all the kinks out of it, she'll run until I'm ready to give it up. It's sad how trucks now are nothing but plastic and electronics. Just more things to break and leave you stranded in my opinion.

Used to drive a 1984 extended hood 359 had a 3406b painted white stretched to 277 inches. sure miss that truck.

Who says old trucks can't earn? I still run a 94 Mack CH owned since new. Even if they sit, as long as it's not too far gone, they are worth repairing and putting back in service, I've done this three times with other trucks I've owned. If you've looked at the price of new trucks these days and you can turn a wrench or two on your own, it might be worth it.

memories. takes me back to when I was kid riding along with my dad in his dump truck. an old ford l9000 with the 3406b and an eaton 8LL. I would look up at the exhaust as he drove admiring the smoke coming out. I used to feel at the time that a true truck had smoke coming out the stacks so his truck was better than all the new ones on the road. Good times. We no longer have that machine, but good memories. Now my dad is driving a volvo vhd with the d12 and eaton semi automatic - and I gotta say I do quite like the ishift too; but nothing beats the classics. Time and place for both.

I hope the old girl is on the road running well. I would to turn some screws on that pump to get her up to today hp and speed. I can’t count how many of these I have freshened up over the years. These are one of the best engines Cat built for trucks. The 3408 engines are incredible engines as well. Until the air fuel ratio control valve gets cocked it will smoke like that after a fresh start up.

my buddy has a pete 358( ive got a couple videos of it) with an 18 speed. he loves that truck! getting ready to put a 14k dollar soot filter on it because of california... in 2020 he can't even drive it anymore it has to have a 2010 engine to drive it past 2020

go and get a beer tap handle for your shift knob the threads are the same generally it makes it look really cool
