Science is amazing and I hope the best for everyone struggling mentally or physically and I do hope we solve these issues’ soon and create newer, safer and more effective treatments for physical/mental health issues . I wish I would’ve been in your spot where I can listen to MIT lectures for free. That is awesome and hopefully in the future I can also get the chance to drive to Boston and sit in a lecture. His money VS computing power exponential growth isn't a physical law either. But the exponential growth of our physical economy fuled it. Based on the exponential growing use of increadible amounts of fossile fule. Which in time is running out. If it does you will see cascading price hocks destroying our economy. He avoids the problem of consciousness. He avoided the question of building empathy into computers. He already said that adding emotion is not feasible at this point. We are the experiencers. Computers add intelligence. Intelligence is not consciousness, nor are sensations or emotions, but all of these are available to human conscious experience. Not just humans, actually. The way to put empathy into computers is to make sure the designers and programmers score high on empathy, which could be done but isn’t. Don’t know how you could control for hackers, who probably lack empathy. More regulation is definitely needed.

Well. Since the 80s we have connected humans to computers; it will become more seamless - can a human and computer communicate even non-invasive ? Yes; even with a human not knowing ? Yes. So one consciousness from a human interacting with AI in real-time… We can simulate neural … We can grow neuro cells; are our feeling in biology? So it seems; unless it’s an antenna - but that means we can make a bio like that anyways; then a human is not more emotional than an receiver of ur. Can AI have the same, feelings, consciousness? 100% yes.

At 120 you will then live until 150 and so on and on, so probably most of us will not die at all. I´m thrilled and excited about this, I want to live forever, maybe, let´s talk about it in 300 years.

In this grand assembly, where minds meet and wisdom's shared with zest so sweet, I shall endeavour to recount the tale of Master Kurzweil, whose insights never fail. He eloquently unveiled the future's veil, speaking of machines that think and learn, a revolution at every turn. For sixty years, yes, he has toiled in AI's vast domain, where neural nets and algorithms reign. He spoke of days when machines so keen could mimic man's intellect, a scene once deemed but a distant dream, now closer than it doth seem. He tells of language models grand, whose words flow like Shakespeare's hand. These models, GPT by name, have changed the game, their prowess famed. With rapid growth, they've captured hearts; they play their part in every field. The exponential growth, he says, of computing power that never stays does promise us a bright future where human intellect takes flight. By 2045, as Kurzweil claims, our minds and machines will be the same, a millionfold, and our thoughts shall grow to heights as we do not know. But caution too he doth advise, for with great power danger lies. We must, with wisdom, use this gift, our spirits high ever to lift. In ethics, care, and thoughtful deeds, we'll ensure technology feeds the common good and leads to a future where all succeed. So let us then, with open minds, embrace the future, seek and find the ways to harness this great force, and set our collective course towards a world of wonder where all can thrive, and in harmony with machines, we'll drive humanity to heights alive. In Kurzweil's vision, clear and bright, we see a beacon in the night. A future filled with hope and light, where human potential reaches new heights.

Delightful. I love that Ray dresses and expresses as he wants or, wants to explore. What, you want he should wear only black t shirts and jeans of the ai community? I'm an. elder from trying to catch up community. I appreciated the overviews and simple speak. Thank you Ray and thank you Peter.

A question for Ray Kurzweil in the Q&A. 58:15 "We've talked a lot about a post-scarcity world here, and I wanted to know how do you see the future of currency, jobs, and just general value?" An interesting talk but I was definitely unimpressed with his response to this specific question. Are we heading towards a world of abundance and zero marginal cost where money becomes obsolete?

Interesting that Ray comments that Germans have perhaps done the most introspecting regarding their history while at the same time many Americans are today happily following the trends that 1930's Germany did. All human beings are capable of what the Germans and Japanese did during WWII. Thinking that those behaviors are specific to a few nationalities is absurd. We have plenty of evidence today that Americans are fully capable of being fascists.

AI is a tool for human use. In order to control AI, we need to be able to hold humans responsible for their use of the technology. Therefore, we need to be able to identify who is controlling the AI system which is causing harm just as we need to do for any human bad actor.

Ray (or anyone else who has a perspective on this), a few 'existential' questions:why is a computer beating some grandmaster at Go a good or necessary thing? What human purpose does that serve? And is there reason to worry that after AI is better than people at virtually everything, humans will lose the motivation to excel? Why bother under circumstances in which AI can out-Chopin Chopin? Next, do you worry that saying that AI will free people to do what they really want to do is a bit glib? What if most people want to do...nothing? No aspiration, no sense of purpose, no or little sense of the goals of human community. I don't raise this point simply to be negative, but looking at current conditions, I note that it doesn't take much for people to feel alone, directionless, unconnected. Last, in this presentation/discussion, you make more than one reference to extending human longevity and, glancingly, to the idea of "living forever." Was that a euphemism, or do you have a serious line of thought regarding an AI-human connection or fusion, or some form of human embodiment in AI that would result in immortality? Thanks, Gene

1. I think the likes of Go is simply a milestone. It was something that was thought impossible for a computer to do. Consider these examples of improvement that cannot be dismissed or ignored (its also good marketing). It showcases how powerful the tools are, and further validates them, which might be an intangible factor which fuels it's exponential growth. 2. Computers did this to chess years ago, people still play chess. The people who would be upset, were never doing the craft out of the love of the craft. True artists do what they do, and will always do what they do. Fake artists, will complain, because they only did it for an income. 3. This is important, terrifying, and exciting. A better area to focus: what's the point? Is it a travesty that this meaning could be taken away and people strip naked? Or is it a travesty that people were always void of meaning and naked in the first place? Or, are most things people do currently less than worthless, and it will be a good thing for people to realise this and be free? I have no good opinion here... But l do think it shows a weak, problematic foundation. Personally, l am not sure what could be stripped for me now, there are so many things l want to learn and explore. Is it possible to strip away curiosity? A large percentage of people find meaning outside of themselves, which can be stripped away, was it ever meaningful? A percentage of people find some internal meaning, which cannot be stripped away, or better yet realise they create their own meaning. Is the problem the possibility of the coming AI, or how things are currently? 5. Yes there are people who want immortality, literally. And that's ok. I personally just want the choice to live as much as l want.

@@Custodian123 Luke, thanks for the thoughtful response. I'm interested in these matters because I'm working on a book "Forever and a Day") that, beside considering other related themes, explores the speculation that the singularity should not be thought of as a 'mechanical' accomplishment or breakthrough, but an organic one; that is, an evlolutionary moment, operating largely within the guidelines and rules of natural evolution. It remains an open question in the minds of some of the people studying this subject whether some form or type of 'immortality' may be achived in this evolutionary process. --Gene
