This is the story of our Journey to the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk. Tuktoyaktuk is a small Inuit village in the far north of Canada. 10 years prior, you couldn't have driven here in the summer as there wasn't even a road. But now, the infamous Dempster highway goes all the way to the Arctic Ocean. In fact, this is the only year-round public road that accesses the Arctic Ocean in North America. (The Dalton highway stops miles before the Arctic Ocean). Just for this fact alone, Overlanders are flocking to the Dempster Highway. The Dempster is 550 miles (886 km) of graded but very dusty dirt road from the Klondike Hwy to Tuktoyaktuk. This route takes you through some of the most remote areas in North America.

Great drone video. We drove in a truck camper to Tuk in 2018, the first year the all-weather road was open and spent the first half of July on the Dempster and in Tuk. We were in no rush and in our mid 60’s, assuming this was our one and only trip to this beautiful land. Yes, the water was warmer than I thought it would be. 😃

Thanks for sharing! That's the way to do it! I'd love to know how much it's changed since when you were there and now. Tourism is going to have an effect on the community. Some good and some bad. But either way, it's an awesome trip!

@@Famagogo hi. It was the first summer the New Tuk road was open for travel. A bit soft in places. The campsites may have been there along the ocean, but virtually everyone was camped around the "ARCTIC OCEAN” sign. We were there for 3 days. People had campfires going in the evening. Someone had a guitar. People came and went. The guy with the large walk-in smokers was there selling fish. Everyone was happy and with lots of generally quiet conversations. We were parked by a picnic table beside the slope down to the ocean. It was not warm. My wife waded into the water, I went for a swim. Water is colder in Newfoundland. The real magic was setting the alarm for 3:00am and bundling up to watch the sun NOT set. Spent almost 3 weeks on THE ROAD in our truck camper.

Earlier this summer back in June we had some pretty thick Canadian wildfire smoke here in Chicago. Dramatic drone footage of the wildfires. As usual great stuff .👍✌

Such a fantastic video to share your travels through Alaska. I’ve only been there on a cruise, which is no comparison to what you’re experiencing on the road. I don’t know that I’ll ever drive there in my van, so it’s great to see your video. Thank you. Great to see you and Kathy so happy, and as always, helping others along the way.

I traversed the Dempster Hwy. in June 2022, reaching Tuk for the Summer Solstice. Enjoyed Tombstone Interpretive Centre some 76 kms into the Dempster, and the Pingos outside Tuk.

Great you were able to help Bill Burr at the side of the road. Good video, and helpful info tidbits. I’m planning to do this drive from Toronto end of Aug. ‘24 or next year same month. I’ll skip this year if I’m able to take more time off and drive to Colorado, Utah and Idaho.

I'm confused, you showed a part standing in front of the Arctic and said "we made it". Then right after that you said you had 400 kilometers to reach Tuk. Isn't that arctic sign in Tuk?
@Famagogo
@Famagogo 4 ай бұрын
Sorry, no, the Arctic sign is where we cross into the Arctic Circle. Tuk is still much further north. We reach the Arctic Ocean at Tuk.

I am ready to spend my retirement traveling for a year,torn between a Transit and a Sprinter,as such,how do you find the reliability of the Sprinter,which I prefer but the maintenance availability is from what I understand to be minimal.Just curious if you would comment. Thanks man enjoy your travels.

Thank you, it brought back our recent memories of the Dust! One doesnt know dust until the Dempster has been driven. I have to know, did the young man at the fuel stop in Eagle Plain ask if there were more vans coming? When the 20 of us descended upon him he said we were his worst nightmare lol And I have a story to tell about Tuktoyaktuk but that's for the next time we meet. Meanwhile, enjoy that part of the world and Safe Travels.

I've watched a few of your videos as well as some other people driving the dempster, but I'm more interested in the stuff you don't mention. Such as gas prices, total cost of a trip (minus replacing an axel) what kind of drone you use, and other financial considerations

It's safe to travel on the Dempster with, for exemple, Toyo Open Country AT III ? I want to put theses tire on my Kia Carnival 2023.

I’d think those tires would be great. I’ve never owned them but they seem really solid. I can vouch for the BFG KO2 as that’s what we used up there and for the last 750K miles. They are so amazing.

Enjoyed the video. Do you think you could make the journey in a Promaster van which is 2 wd. How helpful is 4 wd or awd?
@Famagogo
@Famagogo 10 ай бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching. YES, You could do the Dempster in most any van, truck or car. Having quality all terrain tires and fuel range would be the biggest consideration. New sturdy AT tires and 1-2 full sized spare tires would be ideal. A tow would be very costly. So make sure you're prepared to handle any issues yourself. Maybe see my repair kit video for some ideas of what I bring along. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdWmgMt0sMjJhmQ.html
