Maui, Hawaii, is a special place full of stories that have mostly stayed on the Island. Today, we're meeting up with a local who goes below the surface to give us a view into the culture and lifestyle of those living on an Island that is unknown to most of us.

Hey Peter, I'm so glad you are doing the Hawaiian series. I watched a YT vid about a cruise ship that travels within the islands and it talks about the crew. I don't believe there is any historical value to the video, but I was surprised to learn that people would spend the money to cruise inter-island. I was saddened by the fire that hit Lahaina, especially all the historic buildings that were lost. There is new growth on the damaged Banyan Trees, it looks like they will make a complete recovery. I live in MA but have vacationed in HI.

I feel their pain. we have people in this world that could careless about doing the right things in life. Wouldn't it be nice if we the people had a way meaning ''us'' stay in control of these important things in our lives. There's more of us and we as a team should come together to better handle and control our most important things. We have a democrat and a republican party manipulating everything and they are all making more money than they should be. George Soros and others should be stopped!! We know they have a master plan to take all they can leaving the rest of us in the gutter's.

Maybe I'm missing something here. In the last year I've heard nothing but bats#it crazy, far-right conspiracy theories claiming that these rich liberals want to steal the land in hawaii from native Hawaiians. But apparently no one can get around the 99 year land lease agreements. That's the one important detail all these far-right nut jobs seem to leave out.

I love this guy’s philosophy, “people move here and try to change it exactly to the place they came from.” A warning of all states. If you move out of your state for better opportunities, leave your old place behind. You moved for a reason, don’t make the reason be you.

I'm retired, living on social security, and I had that same feeling of not being able to afford to travel. But watching Peter's videos made me realize that I'm surrounded by interesting people communities I know very little about. A few blocks this way and a few miles that way. Filled with exceptional people living lives very different from mine. Peter has encouraged me to start speaking to who I used to think of as strangers, but now think of as characters in my very own video. They're waiting to tell me things I've never even imagined. A few blocks this way, a few miles that way; suddenly, I'm rich enough to travel.

I'm one of the Hawaiians who doesn't live on the island. My mothers side of the family is from Hanapepe, Kauai. I'd love to go back and really reconnect one day, but it's just too expensive. Thanks for visiting Hawaii and exploring past the glitz and glamour. It's a really beautiful place, but there's a lot of sad stories, difficult situations, and heart break sprinkled throughout. Not many bother to look in and really see the real Hawaii.

It is true about listening and looking for the omens or ancestors or amakua. When my boyfriend and I were out fishing between Maui and Lanai, we accidentally hooked a whale, probably on a barnacle. The whale pulled our boat backwards until my boyfriend was able to unhook us. Then the whale spy hopped in front of the boat, checking us out. We bowed in apology. My boyfriend was so overcome, that he proposed to me. I should have figured out that the whale pulled us backwards, and said no. Instead I said yes, thinking of the awesome thing we experienced. Hey Peter, just wanted to say I really appreciate the unbiased viewpoint you take into conversations, whether it is politics, religion or social topics. Feel like it’s rare in todays society and people only want to associate with their ‘tribe’. There is no gotcha moments on your channel or trying to belittle someone’s opinions. The way you converse with people allows them to feel comfortable and coherent in articulating themselves. Through your channel I am able to listen to contrasting viewpoints to my own, without feeling like an agenda is being pushed on to me. Keep up the good work 👌👍

Excellent heartfelt episode, Peter! Thanks for sharing Alika with us. I grew up in the Seattle area in the 1950s & 60s. People moved here and changed it.
