Calling all Netflix #Carmasters fans! Discover the origins of the real Mach 5 Speed Racer built by ‪@AbbasOwnMinistries‬ Leslie Kendall, Chief Historian of the Petersen walks through the legendary Mach 5.
The Mach 5 has been described as “the most famous race car in the world” because of the continuing popularity of the 1967 Speed Racer cartoon series, which has an estimated fan base of 50 million people. In 2000, this three dimensional interpretation of the cartoon Mach 5 completed a nationwide automotive safety tour sponsored by the Child Safety Network. Speed Racer Motors later unveiled plans to build a Signature Series of 100 road-ready Mach 5’s numbered and signed by Peter Fernandez, the voice actor and creative force behind the Speed Racer Cartoons. Unlike this prototype which has a mid-engine, the Corvette based “production” roadsters will feature a 5.7-liter, 385-horsepower V-8 engine mounted in the front.

Before the Speed Racer move came out, the studio announced they were going to make 100 Mach 5's and sell them for $100,000 each. I tried my best to get on the list to buy one. Planned to take rout a home equity loan to do it, but figured it would go up in value. They never went through with it, much to my disappoint. My wife jokingly said she wanted one too. I whispered in my four year old sons ear and he, in his squeaky little voice perfectly said " Mom. Chicks don't drive the Mach 5" My 30 year old son and I still laugh about that memory.

I was born in 2006 and the live action came out in 2008. We had it on dvd and I’ve been obsessed since I’ve seen it, I’ve watched the movie at least a dozen times

In Japan, the M on the hood stood for “Mifune Motors,” the logo for the family business. The car was named “Mahha Gō.” Mahha means Mach.

The G on Speed’s polo shirt stands for Goh. His real name is Goh Mifune. The Japanese title of the show is called Mahha Go Go Go! The Japanese love puns and wordplay.

"Mach GoGoGo" was the Japanese version of the show. Reminds me of the title "Golion" for Voltron. same attitude. I don't know if the engine was ever exposed, I do know a rough diagram was on the windsheild and on wall charts in the first episode. "Pops Racer" said it was to be a 30,000 RPM I do not think it would hold up under that RPM on the race track would burn up. It was likely a V-12 with a six-pack, or two of carbs.

My all time favorite car at the Petersen, along with the Porsche 550 Spyder (the same model James Dean was driving when he crashed). The only place in the world I can see either of these cars in person. I’m lucky to live so close. Thank you so much for sharing this.

I've seen this car twice now, and absolutely LOVE this car. It is my all time favorite car, and has been since I was younger. I'm only 26, but my parents taught me right! I drive a themed Mustang around the Mach 5 called "Mach 5.0" It's breathtaking to see the actual car in person... P.S. The "M" stands for Mifune. In the Japanese anime, Mifune Motors (Racer Motors in America) was Speed's (Go Mifune was his name in Mach Go Go Go) father's (Pops Racer) family owned racing company since Pops built racing cars. The Mach 5 being his most successful.

The Mach 5 was by far the most badass, sharp looking car in the history of mankind. I don’t care whether you want to Shelby cobra or a GT 40 or some exotic Italian sports car. Nothing comes close to how cool this car looks.

In the original 1967 series, the Mach Five is a white racing car with an "M" written on its hood (which does not stand for "Mach 5", but instead stands for "Mifune", both Go's last name. - Wikipedia. *I had to fix that real quick once I heard him say the M stood for Mach. I knew it didn’t. So here is the correction above.

"Go" is five in Japanese. I believe in Japan (and on the package of the Charrawheels/ Japanese Hot Wheels version) it is the Mach Go-Go-Go!

Agreed. I’ve been trying to find a way to get hold of Brad Bird. If there is a person who can do a Pixar version - but true to form - it would be him. *As you can see (looking at my avatar) I’m still a Speed Racer fan even at 53. Haha. It’s the robot driver from the episode "Melange Still Races!".

There is one of the Corvette based models at the Horton Classic Car Museum in Nacona, Texas. The inside is unmistakably a Corvette convertible. Still very cool!!

The original Japanese series is called Mach GoGoGo. "Mahha-go" is the name of the car. The Kanji character for "go" essentially means "item number" In Japanese "go' is the word for the number 5. So the name of the series is actually Mach Number 5 Go! The name of the main character in the original Japanese series is Go Mifune. The "M" could also stand for Mifune Motors...which is Speed's father Pop's mechanic shop. So essentially that's also his name on the car. It was never intended to propose that the car could achieve Mach 5 speed.

For example... the 'M' on the hood stands for Mifune Motors, the company Pops Racer worked for in the original Japanese series....not "Mach" like this guy says. I could go on, but I'm already commenting below. Just sharing your point about the weak execution of "Deep Dive" here.

Want to hear a kicker, I’m about to do a 69 mustang Fastback as tribute car in a Mach 5 theme as my dad was a huge anime fan. All Mach 1 numbers will be swapped out with a custom 5 decal.

Well it’s coming along got the white paint picked out. Body is almost ready for it. Just about got all the parts assembled, getting ready to get the seats reupholstered next week. I may talking to the air but I’ll share here when it’s done.

All live action movie props should be in a museum of some kind for the public, not owned privately by some individual "fan". Speed Racer was a cartoon but it is great to have a concept of the car in real life. And accessable to the public. I am an avid supporter of museums. Espeically to support the availability of museums for making public all public related props!

It must be very difficult to replicate a Mach 5 with the lines of the original design. I've never seen any physical recreations that respect the original design, its magnificent curves.

One detail that's often overlooked or inaccurate is the # of cutouts on the rims...there should be six circular cutouts according to the way the Mach 5 was drawn in the series.

The wheel rims are inaccurate. It's supposed to have 6 circular cutouts making it a 6 spoke rim, not 5.

Not sure why a company like “Factory Five “ hasn’t made kit car…I’d argue that the Mach 5 is more well know than a Shelby Daytona or Ford F40 which I think exist in kit form through them.

It's clearly shown as a front engined car in the cartoon, and unlike what this host says... there are a few (far better looking) 'real life' Mach5s rolling around done properly with regards to this. Most use a Corvette chassis & engine.

Building a ridiculous car like this under the guise of teaching kid's safety is absurd. Somebody was sold a bill of goods.... but I'm glad they were because it's a beautiful machine and a piece of Anime, Japanese, American and automotive histories!
