I took your idea and made it a little different. Instead of having the jack on the bottom I mounted it to the top. Then I attached a board to the jack on the head to make a block to push down with and did it that way. It actually is easier to load and unload the press. Also attached to the top and the brick pushing down is springs to help pull back the jack when I release the pressure. So just turned the whole idea you got upside down. Not sure if you want to try it out not. Just a idea.

I like it as well. Being an engineer I saw a few things I would do diff such as multiple discs to use it to make bricks, stacking multiple pipes, ways to add length, primarily things to increase the number of logs/ bricks in a given timeframe... but the basic Idea you have is golden!

Hello, I'd be glad to help you. I used a 2 ton bottle jack that I bought at Lowes for around 10 dollars. I didn't secure it to the base. It just sits there and can be easily removed. The press frame is really straight forward. Just two by fours nailed together and painted with some exterior paint I had left over. The pvc is schedule 40 and I used 4 inch for the form. 3/4 inch for the center tube and 3 inch for the ram. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Cheers!

Another thought. cut multiple discs, and use them to make round bricks using the pipe and jack... the greater the pressure used to press the bricks the longer they burn and the faster they dry. viably you could make 6-8 bricks at a crack if you use a ladder to stand on wile filling and pressing the water out of the pipe. You May have to add an additional pair of 2x4''s (use hook and ring latches to lock in place) to use a ram to push the paper bricks out, but the time savings may be worth it, OR cutting the pipe down, and making a 2 barrel or even 4 barrel setup with the jack pushing all the rams via a plywood plate all at once. The biggest issue with making paper logs and bricks is time, mass production helps cut this tremendously. Just make it the same way as you would normally. And use a plywood plate that covers all the pipes on he bottom (paint it with an oil based enamel that has been thinned heavily so it penetrates deeply, and keep adding layers as it dries until the plywood is literally laminated with the enamel and completely waterproof. this is an OLD trick to make regular construction grade exterior plywood stand up for use making small boats) You can easily do four pipes this way... If you want to go crazy and do more than 4 pipes at a time, weld your frame out of angle iron from old bed frames. The angle iron used in old bed frames was (past tense) cold rolled and two pieces laid out as a channel will be less likely to bend over time... Ive made small trailer tongues out of this stuff, running a bead on both sides with flux core wire weld, and had them outlast factory made tongues on trailers used off road, and for agricultural use, so ti will work with no issue here. AND if its for a SHTF situation, would be the only choice since longevity of equipment should be a major point with anything you make or buy.Here is a question for everyone:Has anyone tried using a cheap lawn and garden shredder such as the one from Harbor Freight for shredding papers?

Great way of making logs. It is a KISS method. ( Keep It Simple Stupid ). I also like the fact that you are using leaves with paper. The leaves leave 18% carbon that woods logs. Leaving a hole through the middle is a good idea too. The hole will help it burn hotter because it will let air flow through it. The only thing I have to say is to make more round wood press plates instead of cutting another pvc pipe. I would just place it on top of the other pipe after you have made your first press.

Personally Id be trying all kinds of yard waste to try mixing in, just to see what works.  Yes I'm more than just a prepper, my mindset is more in the area of skills and knowledge than simply stocking shelves. After all no matter how full your shelves are, you still run the risk of emptying them.  So, what do you do when you run out of paper to make logs? and the trees are gone?  need to know in advance!  I already know many things and ways to process burnable fuels, but there is ALWAYS the what if they run out factor.   AND I also know how to make toilet paper....  Id rather make fuel out of something other than paper first... cause there is not risk of thistles in TP made from newsprint!  (tounge in cheek, bur only partially)

hi, it looks like a really nice idea and i was thinking of making one to get rid of all the junk mail that i get and the sawdust that is created in my shop. one suggestion and i'm not being critical but i think i'm going to mount my jack on top so the water doesn't run down on it and maybe some type of funnel so i can fill it easier, i see myself out in the cold making these. thanks for the idea of the pvc pipe though that will cut down on the assembly time.

@georgegallios It normally takes 2 days for the fibers to absorb the water enough to allow them to combine. You can use saw dust, but you have to add something else to it to help it combine together. I would use old news paper, leaves, grass clippings, and you can even add a little flour to help it along. Some people say that you can speed the process up by adding bleach to the slurry mix. I haven't tried this myself. Good luck!

If you are talking about waxy drinks cartons, why not create a separate press for these using 4 pieces of ply screwed together so the drinks carton 'just' fits inside. cut the top off the carton, spike a few holes in it, fill with slop and compress the water out, remove the tamp, add more slop & press again. Repeat until the carton is ram packed & all the water is pressed out.

Mihai Mateescu 1) Probably for more even & faster drying. Instead of drying something ~5 inches thick, the hole makes it only about 2 inches thick. 2) Yeah, I'm guessing probably, but it looks like it's at a more convenient height where it is.
@sludgeguts6 жыл бұрын
1. The hole in the middle ser4ves two purposes. 1> To aid drying the log. 2> to aid burning 2. Not if you sat the frame on the floor, then the jack is back at a reasonable height.

Have you tried using sawdust or even mixing it with the paper and leaves? Also, can you cook with the briquettes?
@ProfessionalArmourer8 жыл бұрын
cooking would be dependent on how its used. I'd say no to a grill, yes to a closed stove.  Paper smells different than wood based coal and would affect the taste of the food. a closed stove wouldn affect the taste due to no smoke contact. that's how they used dried manure in daysgone by On adding sawdust, it would work. anything burnable that doesn't release noxious gasses would be fair game, such as wood shavings, PROVIDED whatever it is doesn't cause the bricks/logs to fall apart. Sawdust would be a viable filler as it does make an excellent compressible filler, and the sludge from the paper will act as a glue. But here is a thought for you: If you have a ready source of sawdust, start collecting candle stubs ( local church is a good source if you are a "good Member") go to the local thrift shop and get some aluminum ice cube pans or small metal cake pans and mix the dust with molten wax to make a paste, keep the wax molten in a double boiler type setup ( one can with the wax in it, inside a larger can full of water so the boiling water heats the wax) when the sawdust is saturated and fully soaked keep adding more and keep it heated. when you have that thick paste put it in the tray/ pan and before its completely cooled with a heated knife, cut into ice cube sized blocks when firm enough break them apart, now the hard part. wrap these blocks in a couple layers of newsprint and tie off like it is a bottle of wine being given as a gift and rim off leaving some room above the string you tied with, and then take this little "scumbag" (used condom reference intentional for descriptive reasons and not to be gross, so if you don't get it, ask a trusted male friend to explain) and dip it in more molten wax so the paper soaks completely through, using a tong so you don't burn yourself. If you wrapped the paper tight enough it will work as a fuse to light the sawdust briquette you made, This is one of the BEST fire starters you can make, AND if you used paraffin or true Beeswax (true holy candles from church) it works even better, and going by your name, (snap judgement on ethnicity on this) the Jar type Icon holy candles that are popular with Hispanic Catholics, have a blended wax that works fantastic for this due to the fact that this was, like paraffin and beeswax, burns away, rather than simply melts as the wick burns. With cheap candles the wax melts and runs off (crayon wax) because the wick doesn't burn hot enough to consume the wax, the paraffin and bees wax burn at lower temps. so they wont drown the wick in these jar candles. Btw I was taught that by a little old Mexican Lady I new when I was a kid.

I cant answer for the author, but as an engineer I can tell you that it does add heat output due to increased burn surface/venture effect drawing air in, and the more surface on the wet brick/log per pound of material used, will decrease the drying time, But the biggest benefit would be the manufacturing benefits, such as time reduction, and easier compression, as well as better press, greater water removal, which also adds to decreased drying time.
