In this video Chris is rebuilding an embankment which has subsided after a winter of heavy rain.
Christopher Vine’s series of 20 books tell the story of Peter and Grandpa building and operating a railway across their farm.
The Peter's Railway bookshop is here: petersrailway.com/shop/ “Combining real engineering with adventures and true stories, these books feed inquisitive young minds!”
Bongo (or Fiery Fox in the books) is the miniature steam locomotive, made by Chris Vine, Author of the Peter's Railway series of books.

I grew up reading all of your books and they really inspired and educated me, and I hope to become an engineer one day. It was a hit of nostalgia when I discovered your channel, and I'd love to see more stuff from you. All of your videos are really well done, almost like small documentaries, but still have a lovely personal tone to them. I think that anything you put out on here will be really appreciated by your fans, and all railway enthusiasts of all ages.

Thank you for your lovely comment, it is very much appreciated! If the books have done anything to encourage people to go into engineering, then I am so pleased. I hope you do become an engineer, it is a fascinating life. I will try to make some more videos this summer!... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

Once again Peter’s Railway has demonstrated that engineering is amazing! Thanks for the video! I would be very interested to see the calculations that go into resolving the components of forces in 3D.
@PetersRailway
@PetersRailway 9 күн бұрын
Thank you for the lovely comment! In fact the calculations for resolving forces (or anything really) into two directions at right angles to each other (EG up/down and left/right) is simple. You just take a right angle triangle with the long side as being the resultant force or velocity etc, and then the two other (orthogonal!) sides are just sines and cosines of the angle. 3D, you just do it again, but it does get more tricky to visualise. If you google how to resolve forces, you will find some diagrams which show it much better than words... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. A pond may look good, but then that embankment becomes a dam holding back a surprisingly heavy weight of water. Whatever you do, don’t let that water seep through!

Probably too late now but geotextile (drainage) fabric layers as the embankment was built up. Used in small and large embankment projects. You have a nice railroad..
@PetersRailway
@PetersRailway 16 күн бұрын
You are exactly correct! The trouble was that the heavy equipment is very seldom available to do railway work and there wasn't time to do this. However, the main part of the embankment seems pretty stable so I think it will be ok from now on... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. The victorians used to grow marestail on railway embankments to stabilise them. It's a terrible plant , amazing root system, and speads like wildfire as my front garden can testify.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. There is only one problem - if it escapes into the garden I shall be in big trouble!!! Seriously, now that the grass has grown all over the soil, it seems to be pretty stable now. (fingers crossed...) Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. Centrifugal force from the loco will push to the outside rail, therefore make the outside wider to counter this force
@PetersRailway

I think that the amount the outside rail can move is very small compared to the clearance between the rail gauge and the width between the flanges. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS.
