Hi I’m a farrier from the uk today I trimmed Blade. As you can see blades feet are over grown and are in need of a trim. The vet was present for sedation and advice on after care for his hoofs.
Blade had to be sedated as he would just run away if he was not sedated. We have put him on a 6 week trimming cycle and with this we should see his feet improve over time.
Don’t forget to like and subscribe to my channel as I upload horse shoeing and trimming videos on a regular basis.
Hope you have a great day and I’ll see you on the next video 🤙

as a former horse owner, I cringe at the thought that someone just let this horse's feet grow out this horribly. There is no excuse. If you can't afford the most basic of care for animals, then you should not have them period. It is not fair to those creatures that rely on our ability to provide basic care for their health. This includes farriers, dental floating, vaccines, grain, hay etc. In addition to pasture and enclosures that allow them to graze and be happy with at least one other horse or another companion animal. They are not supposed to live alone, they are in fact pack animals. So please think before you take in these beautiful animals and ensure you can afford their care. It is not inexpensive and must be done. Thanks for listening to my rant. It is about the animals, if it hurts people feelings then so be it.

Yes, they should be done on a regular basis, but if the vet is needed for sedation try to coordinate everything with the owner vet and farrier can also be near impossible to arrange.

@@faragraf9380 I don't know if anyone has answered your question and I see its been 3 months, but as a horse person myself I can say that its likely he's a rescue that's never had them done regularly or never had the training. as big of a horse as he is training on to get comfortable where you can handle his feet is difficult. you can see in the video even under sedation he's not relaxed and is still fighting a bit. that tells me that without sedation it would be near impossible to touch them. I'm sure he's receiving desensitization training between time but 6 weeks comes faster than you think, and progress can be slow. depending on the background some may never allow there feet to be touched without the sedation.

@@crabapple1951 I have been watching videos from Middle or Far East (??), they show trimming of a b s o l u t e l y n e g l e c t e d donkey hooves and the cruel handling which I think is severely criticized by all European and US-American people: see the video titles listed below. But there is o n e advantage: These trimmers use only one tool: extremely big knives, (which wouldn`t be purchasable for ex. in Europe) and they need only one minute or less to shorten a hoof with them. Disadvantage: They haven`t got smaller knives for the treatment of the frog or any other tools such as files etc.): 1. "The collection video of repairing donkey hooves" 2. "There was such a big stone stuck in the donkey hoof! Donkey can`t walk because of pain" 3. "The donkey hooves have pus and rotten flesh, and the master successfully cured it!" 4. "Injured and Neglected hooves get trimmed" 5. "Beste befriedigende Klauenpflege-Kollektion! Hilf dem Esel, wieder zum Leben zu erwachen". 6. "Amazing Life changing Donkey Hoof Trimming with Lee Olsen......"

@@charlottebonnie5320 I've seen those videos! though the language spoken there was most likely Chinese. At first I just liked watching them fix the donkeys but as I compare to professional farriers and those videos, I can see what you mean. All those hoof trimmers have this incredibly sharp knife and a basic stool that just looks like two planks with a strip of rubber tire over them. And they just cut the donkey's hoof a ala guillotine style. Sometimes the trimmers get bold and use garden sheers to cut of a large chunk of the hoof and "polish" it up with the guillotine knife. Idk if what they are doing is actually harming the animal because I am not that knowledgeable on hoof trimming
@Volgotha
@Volgotha Жыл бұрын
@@Peppmintleaf it's doing much more harm than good. They don't do z rays to see where the coffin bone is, they cut willy nilly and don't give a f abt the animals at all. The garden sheers hurt the animal a lot bc of the torsion it creates. Sure the hoof has no nerves but it's connected to tissue that does, which is often infected. Imagine cutting an injected hangnail off with blunt scissors. Yeouch!!

It's more your upper legs that hurt. I trim my own horse's hooves. I usually only do two hooves at a time and they are not much work, but my upper legs always hurt the next day, because of the position you're standing in. I'm sure professional trimmers are much more trained than I am so they probably don't have this problem anymore. However, I do quite often hear about them having back problems.

My dad was a ferrier for 25 years. He was a lefty, and his biceps on his left arm were about 19”. He was huge man, about 6’ 4”, 385 lb man. He could actually lock the horse’s hind legs up on his shoulder and pull the hoof between his legs. It allowed them to use the force of each other. My dad had back pain for his entire life tho. Had to eventually have back surgery, where he had 7 titanium cages put in around his spine.

I applaud you Brother of the craft. I always find it comical when other videos, title their videos "Massively Overgrown" and only take as much foot, as most others take on a regular basis. This was in fact overgrown as described and not even as bad as others ive seen and worked on. I also feel for you in the way the horse worked you, making it even harder to accomplish and do good work in doing it. Just worked on a Percheron today that was as bad or worse and it wears a person out. Im an old guy to boot, but a stubborn old guy. LOL A helpful tip of advice to you for future endeavors. Use a wrap of some kind, to keep those feathers out of your way, to work.

@@johnwhite9065 the white material is dead dried out sole. In the wild, with lots of contact with rocks, streams, stones and sand, it would get knocked out naturally, as the surrounding hoof gets worn down. But as we have produced particular breeds, and kept them in unnatural environments, we need to trim them to keep them in shape.

It really hurts when people say that, these horses have already been through so much😢

So satisfying that watching this is like ASMR for equestrians. Although more work, the worse they are to start with, the greater the satisfaction - kind of like power washing mud off a truck and polishing to look like new instead of just rinsing off some dust and cleaning the windshield. I have friends who look for the cheapest farrier who comes through the area periodically. If a shoe comes off they have to wait a week or more to get it fixed. Plus their trims aren't on a regular schedule. This often happens due to their budget. I understand that, but they NEVER allow their horse's feet to get that severely overgrown. I have a regular schedule with my farrier and we only get off our 6 week schedule due to the weather or illness.
