This was more than just another F1 win for Sir Lewis Hamilton. This was his first win since that December day in 2021 when an eighth World Championship was snatched from his grasp by a Race Director's mistake. Thirty months on, in front of a huge British crowd that for the most part had continued to support Lewis, despite the generally poor performance of his Mercedes, Lewis composed a victory of epic proportions, beating not only the changeable Silverstone weather conditions but also two of the fastest drivers in F1 today - Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen and McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris. Oscar Piastri finished fourth in the other McLaren-Mercedes, ahead of Carlos Sainz's Ferrari and an astonishing Nico Hulkenberg (Haas-Ferrari). Peter Windsor in this video looks back at a an epic F1 day.

Agreed, when I saw how far back George rejoined, despite an overall well executed double stack, I knew it made all the difference. Even if he didn't retire, I doubt George could have caught and passed Lewis today.

I wonder when George started losing power from his engine because he was losing power well before he retired the car. Notably he was catching Verstappen on the inters initially but then he just started losing tons of time(and then he was told to retire the car)

Yes, Oscar didn't put a wheel wrong in that race but his team screwed him again. I just can't believe how cool and together Oscar always is post race when he knows he could have won... and it is just down to his team always putting Lando ahead of him. Oscar is the only driver to complete all race laps this season which must tell them something about how professional he is. Lando makes quite a few more mistakes but they always give him priority. He was also screwed in qualifying as he was released too late on his final lap.

Lewis has all the stats, which are temporary because someone else is always coming along to take them, but something he has which will never be taken away is that there is a magic about him and the way he races. He is capable of amazing moments like this, still at 39, and as Peter says he is bigger than the sport itself.

In a way he is at a stage of his career everybody envies. Nothing to prove anymore to anyone except to yourself. To be fair he is admirable in this regard. I don't think Lewis rests on his laurels and thinks:"I can take it easy knowing I hold this and that record. I can drive casually or for fun." I mean I wish I had been around to see Emerson Fittipaldi drive competitively in Indycars in his late 40's so Lewis winning again in F1 has rekindled my love for the sport.

Regardless of which team you support everyone felt the Hamilton Tears inside that Helmet, felt the crack in his voice talking to Bono, felt that Hug to His father & Mother. Felt the Mercedes team’s spirits lit up! Felt the silverstone crowd standing ovation, in our homes we were on the edge of the seat, nail biting & certainly looking for a Hamilton win. It’s the stuff made of fairytales & the story well crafted like it was a written for a fictional movie. Bravo to Lewis, well deserved win! Looking forward to Hungary

You sir you're a real racing fan and know the sport well. This reminds me of the time I shed in tears when Ayrton Senna won his last Brazilian GP in 93 when the crowd came on the track and surrounded his car and celebrating the win. It is not only about the racing driver who won the race, its the power of the crowd that makes racing so unbelievable beautiful even how hard and difficult the conditions and circumstances may be, its the support around you that makes you forget the immense pressure. The only drivers who you get an emotional attachment are Fangio, Jim Clark, Hakkinen, Lauda, Senna and now also Hamilton. This make them the best out of the best ever!

What an extremely odd race. Seemed like the first 2/3rd of the race we had no idea who was quickest. It changed from the Mercs to the MCL and back every few laps by a large margin. In the end Russel had bad luck, Oscar got completely done by MCL, Lando and MCL bottled their strategy together and the RB with Max only really got some pace in the last third of the race after some great strategic call form them. Lewis held on well and carried the softs to the finish. Very entertaining and at the same time very odd in the changes of pace. Edit: Hulk was incredible once again. What a guy.

This race showed, just like in Canada, that McLaren has a FAR superior car to everyon in damp conditions. Remember how Norris pulled a 9s gap to Verstappen in like 10 laps there? Red Bull have the best car in high speed turns generating huge amounts of downforce there but aren’t as good as McLaren at lower speeds. When it’s wet they don’t go as fast so the long sweeping turns actually become really long medium/low speed turns. That was even good for Ferrari as Carlos caught up 6s to max today in those conditions. Usually being slower in the low speed turns isn’t a big issue because you also spend less time there as they are short 90 degree turns for example. But if the long turns become also slow turns it amplifies that advantage. In general the pecking order is the same: Slow turns: Ferrari Medium speed: McLaren High speed: Red Bull McLaren has the best mix atm, and can therefore look better after their tires.

@@Frostbyte-Game-StudioOscar has the pace and the feel, just needs to learn how to treat the tyres, where Lando is still ahead. Lando has been a bit disappointing the past few races. He has great pace when he is alone, but his starts and overtaking has not been great and sometimes he stalls when he is chasing another driver. In Imola he couldn't get within a second of Max, in Barcelona he didn't clear Russell as fast as Max did, which cost him the win more than the subpar start. Today he wasn't able to chase after Lewis on the final stint. In Austria Sprint he let Max repass him and in the race, could not pull of a clean move although the contact was Max's fault. Don't get me wrong he is still a very strong driver but I held him in such high regard that it feels disappointing that Miami is still his only win when he could have potentially won in Imola, Canada, Spain, Austria and Britain.

@@Pillshere31 World wide trauma - as a sociopath, you will never get it. There is this ... His cathartic cooldown lap marked the end of a 945-day victory drought; a winless period dating back to the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the final throes of his heady title battle with Max Verstappen. Just a week after that 103rd career win in Jeddah, Hamilton suffered the most bruising defeat of his career when the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and an eighth world title were ripped from his grasp. Two and a half years on from that feverish night, the mental scars inflicted by the controversial actions of then-race director Michael Masi -- actions the FIA later put down to human error -- are occasionally visible. Asked if the win at Silverstone was the final piece of the puzzle he needed to finally move on from the events of 2021, Hamilton said, "I think only time will tell." Give Woody a chance - he has the raw speed he just needs to work on the bells and whistles, the composure and the temperament. Woody and Lando both tend to be a tad overzealous and this can cause brainfog and mistakes - they will eventually dial this out. That said, Oscar Piastri is very impressive and composed out of the gates, even when his team is conspiring to mess up his race 😂 When this Piastri kid dials in his tyre management, he will be hard to beat

0:35 I have to disagree, because LH did seem to loose a bit of motivation and drive, as well as enthusiasm. Notwithstanding an uncompetitive M-B, it was quite clear the lion he was in 2021, was not there in 22, 23, and 24. What he never lost was his elegance and poise. I believe there is absolutely no way Russell would have beaten him prior to 2022, there is no way that would have happen, for as good as George is, he cannot be compared to Lewis by any stretch of the imagination, and this is why I feel LH was not very motivated for the past two and a half years.
@paulallen8109
@paulallen8109 18 күн бұрын
Lewis easily beat Russell in 2023 and ended up 3rd. More importantly the first behind the dominant Red Bulls. Personally I think Russell is d*mn fine driver. Saw him dominate in the lower formulae and he made easy work of Lando while they both were in F2 back in 2018. He outqualified his team mates 37-0 for his first 37 races in F1 while at Williams. He *did* qualify a goddawful Williams on the first row at Spa in 2021. An embarrassing pit stop blunder denied him a first time win the first race for Mercedes in 2020. "motivation" is nonsense. All drivers who end up in F1 have been very motivated do to well which is why they are in F1 to begin with. All the drivers want to win and all of them want to be champion. Too many fools fail to see that the lack of results has *nothing* to do with motivation. When some important factors and variables are missing you can be the most motivated in the world it still won't grant you success. Fools fail to understand this because they reduce a complex question to merely "personal responsibility". The reason for this belief is that people want to dream/imagine only they are responsible and "in control" of their lives. Generational talents like Lewis Hamilton have skills. Others simply don't have it. Hamilton never lost his ability. These last 3 years spelled "Red Bull domination" and dominated they did like no team has ever before. *Everybody* appears de-motivated facing that. As soon as they have a chance they however go for it. Hence the wins by Hamilton, Russell and Norris.

Him winning again is good for the sport as a whole. F1 loves its legends and we all lament when they're retired or gone. When Schumacher made his comeback in 2010-2012 most people were over the moon of seeing him racing again. That he didn't win was lamentable but his presence alone pulled people to the races. When Alonso made his comeback in 2021 people were equally thrilled and Alonso's stint at Aston Martin has surprised most people. When Alonso manages fastest laps people smile and think:"He's still got it." Some people still miss Vettel as well as Raikkonen's no-nonsense comments. I was too young to remember it but when Senna tragically died he left a huge vacuum. With Prost, Mansell and Piquet retired there was a huge drop in television viewers. Mansell was actually called by Bernie Ecclestone himself to comeback to F1 so that people would have a "legend" to watch. This was of course *before* Schumacher had won his first title. *Senna* was the only legend left. Legends are ultimately compared to other legends. In F1, in history, in sport, music and virtually everything. I'm a McLaren fan. Anybody who drives and wins for them is who I (mostly) root for. I wanted Lando (or Piastri) to win at Silverstone but had a secret wish Lewis would win. Mika Hakkinen made me support McLaren. It's also the team of Senna and Prost (both of whom won three titles for them). Kimi Raikkonen ultimately was champion with Ferrari but his raw speed during his McLaren days... pure joy. Wish I saw Senna race. Hamilton signed for Ferrari. Wish he returned to McLaren. Wish Max was driving for them. :) In 2034 if Max is still in F1 I will also proclaim him a legend important for the sport and rejoicing when he wins against "young driver X".

Watching with all my friends and we were certain it was going to happen as soon as we saw Lando go for another lap. McLaren still lacks what Mercedes and Red Bull have and that is the experience. Listening live and how long it took Lewis to reply to Bono over the radio spoke volumes as to how much pain and patience it took to return to the top step at his home race. This F1 season on track has been nothing short of incredible. Very happy that Max and RBR were able to salvage 2nd and even happier that Lewis won this race. Seeing how much it meant to him and him hugging his parents for ages is one of the most heartwarming moments this sport has ever shown me.

@@jamtalawah2231 Hate to be that guy but from what I've read he burned a lot of bridges whilst being at other teams. McLaren offered him a very lucrative contract for 2007-2008-2009 but he ended it prematurely blaming the team for "focusing on Lewis" (Prost did the same with Senna in 1988 but still honored his 1989 contract). Ferrari gave him *everything* and built the entire team around him for five seasons. Luca di Montezemolo eventually grew tired of his antics and summoned him to a personal meeting to clear the air. Word around the Ferrari team was that Alonso's talent mostly circulated around him setting up the car to *his* liking but little else. He wasn't a "team builder" like Schumacher. Ron Dennnis *did not* want to sign him again to head the second era of McLaren-Honda but Honda insisted they wanted a "big name". Honda also agreed to pay his salary. During this time Alonso didn't hold his mouth back slandering Honda whenever he could with "GP engine" etc. Back then I said that "Honda will get it right eventually, just give them time. They're Honda after all and their racing success speaks for itself." It seems Alonso didn't hold this view and basically told McLaren that either him or Honda would be gone for 2018. Now fair enough, McLaren had their own issues but Alonso exacerbated all that. When Honda started their cooperation with Red Bull I said:"They will be champions with them in a few seasons". So Alonso retired. Then he came back with Renault/Alpine for a third time. Before getting upset with them. I think that Ocon guy winning had a thing to do with it (himself rather overrated and erratic). Aston Martin offered him a nice deal. Where he shone in a car basically a copy of the very successful 2022 Red Bull. All he has to do is to beat Lance Stroll... To be brutally frank if Alonso is as great as his supporters claim he is then top teams like Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari would walk barefoot through a mile of glass to get his signature. Alas it seems "Team Lawrence Stroll" is the only one keen on him where he can "mentor" Lance. If I were at Aston Martin I wouldn't build my team around him. Yes, his skill as a driver are still good but *his skill as a team builder and developer* is still questionable. Thus his 11 years without a single win. Some anomaly if it were always due to "always at the wrong team and the wrong time". He's part of that problem.

I honestly think when both Lewis and George went off the track in turn 1, George’s car was damaged there. I saw the video and George took to the air just slightly, possibly causing the damage to the water system.
