16 Guitarists play the first thing that comes to mind, through a Marshall SLP 100 amp- that is DIMED, as in, guitar- straight into the bright input, on 10!
This was a fun vid that we knocked out in an hour during the GuitCon event, held at the Framus/Warwick factory in Octover 2017. Thanks so much to Mick and Dan from That Pedal Show for your help, as well as Robert Baker! And thank you GuitCon and Framus/Warwick!

That is the primary issue with “big iron” - overdriving the power-amp section is where the glorious tone lives. Hiwatt is the same deal. You NEED a big room and some space to play these amps where they push and breathe. Bedroom-level won’t get you there.

This reminds me of a story told by the presenter at a sound reinforcement seminar: He once fought with this bass-player over the guy's volume - guy kept sneaking it up, and the sound man kept asking him to turn it down. So it kept going up and down. Halfway through the show he just went on stage under some pretense and turned the bass amp's volume back down to where he wanted it, then pulled the volume knob off and reinstalled it so it pointed to where the player kept putting it. Sound was great for the rest of the show and bass player never noticed!

The volume doesn't climb linearly in a tube amp (assuming it's a tube amp), so you're probably closer to max volume than you think. There comes a point where you're just controlling the power amp distortion and not really increasing the volume. If you have a solid state, I wouldn't do it, obviously, but for a tube amp, try it out to experience the power amp distortion. With 15 watt amps, it's fun and safe to do it, both for your ears and reasonably so for your neighbors.

The amps sound great even at low volumes but when you pass 50% on the master the sound change because it start to work the power tubes which is what in my amp gives you the fat, feedback and creamy sound, just like this old plexi. I work in a guitar store, and one of the most enjoyable parts of my day is plugging someone into a proper tube amp letting them actually get to turn them up to 10. The look on their faces when they get to play Twin at 10, or an AC30 at 10, or yes...even a 100 Watt Marshall at 10 is just priceless. So many modern guitarists have never had that experience, and it's great to see their reactions. Since i"m in sales, they do also get a little upset with me because the modeling amp they came in to buy for the new band they joined will just never cut it after that.

I actually had a salesperson come over and ask us to turn an AC15 down. because he couldn't hear himself trying to talk to another customer... My salesguy just looked at him, like "Dude- seriously??" There was also the moment trying out a Fulltone 69 fuzz thru a Blues deluxe. I dimed the pedal, turned the amp up, and hit an open E Chord as hard as I could. Firstly, it nearly blew me off the stool; and second, NOW I know what all the 70's rawk gods felt like!! DAMN, what a sound! Had a similar experience with a Supersonic 60- Jesus Christ that was loud- but what a tone!!! (we cranked the clean channel to see how much dirt it had, lol)

Neither will any amp they buy because they will never be able to crank it anywhere. Certainly not at a gig, and not likely even at home. Enter the digital age. If the top studio players in the World can't tell whether they're playing through their own amp or the Fractal Audio model, doubtful anyone else can. Least of all the audience.

@@SixStringHarmonies It's not so much the end resulting sound, but the feel or the amp kicking you in chest. It's irreplaceable. When you play in studios and you play on big enough stages that doesn't matter anyway because you're only hearing and feeling the finished sound. Fractals, Helix, Kemper, Headrush, all these things are great because you get used to playing and have control over the final end resulting sound, but they cannot do what a properly cranked tube amp can do in terms of just giving you that high volume kick. Its fun, it's a lot of fun. And you're right, most people won't be able to do that, but that's why I let people experience that at my store. I know I'm getting old, but I do remember the days of going to packed clubs and bands with cranked amps were on stage. The amps being so loud usually ruined the actual music sometimes. But there is something to be said for that feeling, of being at a show, or playing a show and you can actually feel the power of the amps. When the drummer needs to miked up, to keep up. Now that I'm older, I very much appreciate seeing a band play at much more reasonable levels, but the problem is still there, with real bands, and that's the drummer. The amps used to be able to keep up with, or overpower a drummer, now the drummer is the only stage volume, so if you're in the front row at a smaller venue without proper sound, you can't hear anything but vocals and drums. There's a give and take in these situations.

I played a 1959--SLP reissue for years as a teenager in my parent's basement without an attenuator cranked. It practically ripped your head off and I still remember the sound of my dad yelling from the top of the stairs, "YOU BOUGHT THE WRONG GOD DAMN AMP!" Needless to say, when I got my THD Hotplate (attenuator) that saved my hearing over the long-term! I'm 40 now and have the hearing of a hound dog!

This was a very fun video to watch Pete! I, like most other viewers I imagine, lived the thrill of this experience vicariously through the 16 players who subjected themselves to this thrill/punishment. While I am definitely not surprised, it was still refreshing, in my humble opinion, to see Mick Taylor get the most usable and expressive tone with his magical Strat, Blue. Mick is a great player and there’s no question that there is magic in that guitar. Now please make sure that everybody involved gets their hearing checked!

So many young guitarists these days have no idea the physical and dare I say, emotional response you feel when standing next to and ripping on a100 watt Plexi. What with their amp model computer plug ins and digital modeling toys. Sure, they're okay for some recordings. But legends like EVH, Page, Hendrix etc. didn't just play music, they FELT the music through these beasts! This. Is. Rock!

The hilarity of this comment is that many of the guys that were using tube heads back in the day are now using those modelers, and had the technology been available, they would have used them back then. Geeeez, that was crazy.. I've owned 3 -100 watt SLP's, and know how brutal they are. The absolute sickest one - in regards to pure painful volume - was a 1974 metal face with 6550's. Anyone NOT wearing hearing protection is in serious danger. Careful, guys! Isolation booth for the amp required, or an attenuator. But there's nothing quite like being in a room with one of these beasts on 10.
