Hi everyone! Today's video is a conversation with Christopher Ruocchio, author of The Sun Eater series! But unlike the usual conversation video, I am going to ask Ruocchio about his plan for the series, the Diamond edition, and finally his own ranking of The Sun Eater series. Enjoy!

I agree with Chris’ points about the mentality of book buying in this day and age. I basically exclusively read on a kindle but will still buy books if I like the covers and it is one of my favourite series. Book reading and book “collecting” have never been such separate hobbies, because before you would just end up owning all the books you want to read. That’s no longer the case but I still want to display my favourites as long as they’ll look good on the shelf. That’s also why cover art/presentation is more important now in my opinion. If it’s good, you’ll have people like me buying it both physically and on kindle!

I know what you mean. I have certainly accumulated some physical books based on loving the ebooks I read, too. I try to balance things out now, though, due to my overflowing bookshelves. Meaning I try, if possible, to only get physical books of books I know I will read again. This is especially true for special editions! :)

Would the publisher specifically DAW, consider running pre-sales of previous hardcovers? Buyers could pay upfront then printing can start once numbers hit a certain mark. Less risk. I’d love books 1-3 in hardcover as I have the rest in DAW versions. Great interview and as an indie author I learned a lot, thank you!

Thank you so much! I think that would be a good idea. But publishers are very rigid when it comes to stuff like this. Not sure how we can negotiate this with DAW books.

This was fun, as is tradition I will read Mirror Dance and Memory this year, because every year a Sun Eater book comes out I have to read one of Ruocchio's favorite books so it can compete with it for the top spot at the end of the year. I am personally one of the people who thinks the split helps Kingdoms of Death and Ashes of Man, because I think basically without the stuff in the first 30% of Ashes of Man it would just get too relentless, and like things are just always going worse and worse. After reading Disquiet Gods, it and Demon in White are definitely my top 2, a reread will be required to be sure which gets the #1 spot

That seems to be a good tradition! I haven't read Ashes of Man yet, but I think the division works absolutely well for Kingdoms of Death. Felt lke a slightly hopeful ending despite all the darlness that happened. I will read Ashes of Man this month and find out what i think! Excited to hear Disquiet Gods is up there with Demon in White as the best for you, though. I, too, consider DiW to be my favorite in the series for now!

So to be clear will there be more special editions of Empire of Silence that will be available later? (As a replacement for the hardcovers?)
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 6 ай бұрын
On top of the Diamond edition, yes. There will be an Anderida edition. It will be a bloodbath to get this, though. It's probably less than 1000 copies.

I mean look at Robert Jordan. I have only read two Wheel of Time books so far you can see how Eye of the World strongly evokes Lord of the Rings. The Great Hunt really showed how he was going to do something different.
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 5 ай бұрын
Robert Jordan is probably one of the most forgiven author ever. I've seen tons of fantasy authors being shunned and mocked much worse for any form of inspiration than Jordan copying LotR in EotW. Personally, I don't mind first book wearing the inspiration on its sleeve, but yeah, the second book must turn into something of their own.

What I don’t understand about DAW’s argument for not printing more hardcovers (excepting for a couple authors) is what happens when an author reaches that level of demand like Rothfuss? How many copies does Ruocchio have to sell for him to be at that level where they are then willing or feel pressured from a business standpoint to do a 2nd printing? Because from a consumer standpoint, Rothfuss was unknown at some point in his career, and they (DAW) are willing to foot the rent bill for hardcovers of his books that I see sitting on shelves every week in book retailers but when consumers are willing to pay for a reprint of Ruocchio’s books they only have this argument to fall back on. I saw a ripped copy of Howling Dark sell for over $500 on eBay this morning and just do not understand the thought process over at DAW lol very frustrating
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 6 ай бұрын
Believe me, I want to understand all the details behind the process and system of DAW books, too. It just feels insane to not reprint the hardcover edition of Sun Eater now. Probably won't be long before other companies make a new hardcover edition out of it. $500 for a used standard hardcover is insane.

Empire of Silence is a great book but it does have some serious plotting/pacing issues. I haven’t gotten to book 2 yet but I’m pleased to hear that aspect is improved.

Yeah, I find the framing narrative gradually works against my attention span coupled with the the two issues you mentioned. I'm still rooting for CR to succeed though.

Christopher, if you read this comment- where did you hear Stephen King’s agent was his dealer? Just curious. I’d never heard that before.

I'm not a fan of Stephen King, but I'm going to assume this is something that hasn't been revealed to the public. Kinda make sense, though, because Stephen King has a past with alcoholism and drugs.

@@PetrikLeo He’s pretty open about it all, even admitting to writing some thing she has no memory of writing. I highly doubt this is some trade secret only Christopher knows. I don’t know if it necessarily makes sense that it would be his agent. Longtime King fan so I like to learn about him.
